Just because they can hear doesn't mean they'll know what key the other is in.

/ I like their records anyway

Crank those headphones up enough, and soon they will hear nothing at all.

/Didn't actually see anything about headphones in the article.

Overrated

I thought they sounded muddy. Their set was a great time to get in the beer line.

Let the haters hate - the last two records were incredible. I'm looking forward to their next step.

Too cool. They had a remarkable career as a major-label band in how they treated the business, and now they get to go back to indie and be a benefit to their label, which is how it seemed DGC/Universal treated them in the past few years.

"For Matador, the opportunity to work in partnership with a group who've made such an profound impact on our roster/hometown/collective consciousness was one to jump at." THIS.

They only signed a major label contract so that people could actually GET their albums.Daydream Nation was at the top of many a year-end list, but people couldn't find it readily because their label went bankrupt right after it came out.

Their DGC contract was insane. I think it was something like a 10 album deal, with complete and total artistic control. Artwork, promotion, all in the hands of the band. At first there was a lot of pressure to get singles on the radio, so the label "strongly encouraged" their work with Butch Vig on Dirty.

They even had a clause where they would act as an A&R rep for the label, looking for new bands.

OBviously, their signing to a major was what made Kurt Cobain think that it was cool to do. And, as Sonic Youth have said themselves, Nirvana's success ruined everything.

Still, you won't see a major label be manipulated quite so much as you will when Sonic Youth was under Geffen.

I love their music, but I also love their philosophies.
Even the Starbucks album.

/MUAH!

Honest to blog?

I hate that little biatch.

Thurston, stop the "Indie music ruulllezzz!" bit. We get it, you think Geffen severely underpaid you and "compromised" whatever artistic inhibitions you had to make the most tuneless album known to man.

p.s. I really hated Juno but that was a good line.

Daydream Nation is good, and indie rock is horrible as a rule.

Maybe they could use the headphones to listen to their music, realise it sucks and erase it from history.

Thurston still looks like a kid. Tall motherfarker though.

actually, the best albums are ones where the band just sets up in a room and plays "live" to tape. Overdub some harmonies and call it a day

Murray Street is just such a great album from beginning to end, that it sort of ruined the rest of their catalog for me.

Patterson: Daydream Nation is good, and indie rock is horrible as a rule.

Indie covers an awfully wide spectrum to be considered horrible as a rule. Certainly it's exception to the rule that most of it sucks, but how is that different from what's mainstream? And what's worse: 90% of millions of bands that suck, or 90% of a few dozen acts suck?

tbookman: "Oh and you know what? I bought another Sonic Youth album and it sucked... it's just noise"

I like Juno, but that line is easily as annoying as the "OMG, they opened for PJ and sucked!". Possibly worse considering the Juno soundtrack was pretty bad.
