He's right. I stopped buying a lot of music when one good song is all you got on an album. It also bothered me that the price for CDs were always more then tapes even though production costs were lower.

I think Slipknot sucks, but the guy's got a point. New music today sucks; half the crap on the radio is American Idol winners or runner-ups or almost-runner-ups. Give me music from the 90s.

/also, I feel entitled to free music. Ha!

RetroGnome 2008-09-09 11:02:18 AM
it seems that most of the hits these days are covers of 80's hits, so I'd buy the old stuff to support the artist that actually wrote the song.
Not some lazy new artist getting rich off someone else's work.

I think it just shows that new "artists" couldn't produce a hit song if it fell out of their ass.

The Icelander [TotalFark] 2008-09-09 11:07:17 AM
There's great new stuff out there. Pandora and Last.fm have found me tons of great new music and older music I had never heard of. But the record companies are doing their damnedest to kill those off, too.

Supercheeks [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-09-09 11:07:45 AM
Sad, but true. If they hadn't signed cockchuggers over talented artists, I might consider buying something more often.

why stop at metal? I'm pretty sure I could think of plenty of albums put out this year that are better than anything Slipknot could shiat out.

My theory, based on personal experiences: all of Slipknot's fans are otherwise nerdy military men who were probably not allowed to listen to bands like Slipknot when living with their parents.

I think Fat Mike said it best when he sang:

Music written from devotion
Not ambition, not for fame
Zero people are exploited
There are no tricks, up our sleeve

Gonna fight against the mass appeal
We're gonna kill the 7 record deal
Make records that have more than one good song
The dinosaurs will slowly die
And I do believe no one will cry
I'm just farking glad I'm gonna be
There to watch the fall

Prehistoric music industry
Three feet in la brea tar
Extinction never felt so good

If you think anyone would feel badly
You are sadly, mistaken
The time has come for evolution
fark collusion, kill the five

And why, subby, does this not get an ironic tag, coming from slipknot.

Slipknot earns their money from their music the old fashioned way: concerts. I classify them as good music, as I like my metal somewhat intelligible. Their music is a bit more approachable to the mainstream, which is why the hardcore crowd hates on them, and I understand that. But hands down, they put on one of the better live shows I've seen, and that's both large venue and small.

Slipknot releases consistently decent songs and they have a good point in tfa. I know the headline was probably intended to troll for people who think that any band that has achieved mainstream success, sucks.

I like the new Slipknot album...actually I liked every Slipknot album. Subliminal verses was probably my favorite.

He's right, there really isn't any "great" new music out. I recently got into My Morning Jacket, but that's probably about it.

Can anyone recommend me some good hard rock (not metal) bands? Something along the lines of Evans Blue, Breaking Benjamin that kind of genre?

I haven't found anything new on Pandora.

I agree.
There's a saying about never comparing yourself to others because there will always be those worse than you and better than you. That's how I feel about Slipknot. -Yes there are many bands who are lightyears beyond anything Slipknot would ever pull off. -But I still enjoy what they do. Entertainers should entertain and Slipknot entertains me.

I've seen Slipknot twice now and both times they put on a damn good show. The last time I saw them they seemed a little tired but they still kicked ass.

Sorry, none of those things. Though are you classifying a fan as someone that likes their music or some retard that runs around dressed as a goth because they want to be "different" yet somehow looks like every other person that wants to be different?

TFA is right though. I've been going through my CD's from back when I bought them and at least 75% were purchased because of one song and then ended up listening to only that song. Example would be The Exies. They had a great radio song, but you buy the album and then find out they have a completely different sound.

Cernunnos 2008-09-09 12:51:28 PM
I think the only CDs I've bought in two years have been Les Savy Fav's back catalogue, which, with the exception of their first album, is actually worth every penny, with virtually no filler. I'm starting to think they are going to go down as the "criminally overlooked rock bank of the 00's" (Catherine Wheel was the "criminally overlooked rock bank of the 90's).

/plus tons of Pixies influence in LSF's stuff (especially the new album)

SERIOUSLY...they're right!!

Am I going to buy the formulaic new Metallica album? Do they really thing we didn't realize they basically copied the same pattern, 3 long hard songs, slow song, hard songs, long instumental, then fast, thrashy song? Master of Puppets, And Justice...and now Meth Dagnetic. Ugh...it sounds ok, but it also sounds like a band trying to be 1988 Metallica.

Slipknot has a cool vibe, and gimmick and some decent songs, but gimmicks only go so far. Mudvayne dropped theirs mostly, and they are a better band.

For gimmicks and great music, I have to say Dethklok - The Deth Album is the best metal album out there now.

Oh, Disturbed is the best Metal/Rock band by far too.

:)

I still haven't seen justification for this that doesn't include some exorbitant profit for the record industry. Yes, everyone is entitled, in a capitalist system, to make money off what they produce. I don't begrudge them that. I won't download music if I don't believe it's worth paying for -- I didn't earn it and I don't have a right to it. But I will buy used, or buy digital, or, at the very least, stream it so I know if it's worth paying for.

I rarely buy new albums, and only a small fraction of those are over $10. Even from smaller labels. I just can't bring myself to do it.

I've really been enjoying Operator lately. Not a great band, but good. The lead singer sounds A LOT like Chris Cornell from the Badmotorfinger era. First two songs on the album kick much ass, then the rest mellows a bit.

barneyfifesbullet 2008-09-09 02:18:06 PM
There are few metal bands that I have heard in the last twenty years that were worth the time. I used to live in a indie metal based record store.

Then, there was the rap/industrial metal abortion called nu-metal that made a bad situation even worse. The others are fake satan worshippers or generic wankers that just try to see how many notes and changes they can squeeze into a song. Also, noise bands that just make a wall of noise.

Just play straight ahead hard rock. Keyboards are not preferred, but I can hang with that depending on the material.

There's a reason old bands like AC/DC, Maiden and Metallica continue to pick up new fans. They play straight ahead hard rock, they play it well and they have their own sound. It's a simple formula.

I agree Operator is pretty decent, sometimes I think I am listening to a Chris Cornell song, but overall not a bad record. TonnageVT if you are looking for good hard rock my favorites are Chevelle, Alter Bridge, and Black Stone Cherry. If you are looking for something along the lines of Evans Blue try Framing Hanley.

I'd also like to mention that although 10,000 Fists is one of my favorite albums, I think the new Disturbed record sucks.

IMHO, a lot of rock nowadays is just plain square. There's no syncopation, no backbeat, no remnants of the blues influence, which, like it or not, is the godfather of everything. Bands like Sabbath, Floyd, Beatles (yes, I know you hate them...duly noted) all started out playing blues/early RandB covers. Now all the chords are banged out right on top of beats 1,2,3,4 with no remnant of swinging.

Go ahead and make fun of me. I don't give a fark.

Listen to the much-hallowed Bollocks album by the Pistols; the riff from "Problems", or most AC/DC tunes or T-Rex tunes or a million other examples where the stuff wasn't changing right on the strong beats like it does in, say, 40's pop tunes, which are the epitome of whiteness. People have forgotten you can have a big backbeat and rock at the same time.

I can't say I'm much of a fan of those movies either, but I certainly am not going to say that someone "owes me" because I didn't like them. Expecting someone to be able to please you in specific is somewhat irrational.

If I suspect that I'm not going to like something, I don't pay to go see it but I will most assuredly not try to use that as a rationale for taking for free what I'm not willing to pay for.

Not that I'm accusing you of doing that.

While most of the bands you listed are great, there's a reason why Slipknot is alot more famous than any of those will ever be. Catchy Music. You can hum alot of slipknot songs, they're catchy. Have you ever tried humming a Meshuggah (infinitely better than Slipknot) song? Yeah, not going to happen.

I've bolded the bands I personally like out of your list. The other's I just can't get into.

To the person looking for good rock, they're a little more metal, but Sevendust released an AWESOME album this year called Hope & Sorrow.

P.s. I love me some Slipknot.

I'll freely admit I download all 6 movies in effort to even things out between me and mr.lucas. He's lucky I didn't sue his ass for the travisty that was episodes 1-3...

Now here's an intersting thing to ponder RE: music.... ok I owened all the greenday albums on Tape, so I downloaded them from the torrent.... Do I have to pay twice because they dont make Tape players anymore... I think not... I owened them prior and they get no more money from me.... Not to mention I was in one fo there videos and I didnt get paid for my two days of time... so things are even out even though they got my money the first time, is it fair that I should have to buy all those albums again becuase of techo changes... Fark that, even Bill gates will let me install XP on a new machine when my old one crashes...

Metal is dead because people are ignorant of Gorguts. That's right, a whole genre is dead because of one band and their lack of popularity.
