FTA: The first time I heard the word "punk" was in Time Out where they wrote that Eddie & the Hot Rods were a second-generation punk band and I remember thinking: "What is this word?" And then the Pistols came through and it was clear what they meant.

Joe Strummer is/was so awesome. I'm purchasing this book.

I'll definitely read it, but most of this is already out there between Johnny Green's Book and the recent Joe Strummer biography.

Dude, totally. White Man In Hammersmith Palais was my first favorite Clash song. Once I heard the whole record, The Clash became my favorite record of theirs. The opening riff on Complete Control and then Mick Jone's Solo (You're my guitar hero!) always gets me pumped.

Face front you got the future shining
Like a piece of gold
But I swear as we get closer

That is another one of my favorites.

Nice. Give 'Em Enough Rope and Sandinista! are the records I have listened to the least. Not on purpose. I just haven't made my way to them yet.

Wasn't there at the very begining, nor at the very end either (meaning when they were touring after Combat Rock).

/Topper was absolutely brilliant
//His bad habits helped to destroy the chemistry of the band
///Fark you and your heroin habits, Topper
////Mick's ego and diva antics didn't help either, nor Strummer's stubbornness

SplitGuy: /Topper was absolutely brilliant

Yes, he certainly was -- he could really play very well, and had amazing energy behind the kit. It's only because of that that they put up with him as long as they did.

I don't blame most of the band's dissolution on Topper, tho -- the musical ennui of the late 80's was much more of a factor.

I completely, completely agree. G'EER is a FANTASTIC LP. It got a very bad rap because 1) it was produced by Blue Oyster Cult producer Sandy Perlman and 2) it did not sound like other punk records of the time, meaning "like shiat".

It was a momentary thing that was over by London Calling -- but many critics took it as an attempt for a larger audience -- which is certainly WAS -- but now we all understand that is not a bad thing. The album still sounds awesome.

If there is a better rock song than "Safe European Home" I have never heard it.

They said that we were trash,
Well the name is Crass, not Clash.
They can stuff their punk credentials
Cause it's them that take the cash.
They won't change nothing with their fashionable talk,
All their RAR badges and their protest walk,
Thousands of white men standing in a park,
Objecting to racism's like a candle in the dark.
Black man's got his problems and his way to deal with it,
So don't fool yourself you're helping with your white liberal shiat.
If you care to take a closer look at the way things really stand,
You'd see we're all just attractive and successful African-Americans to the rulers of this land.

While I think Crass is a pretty good band this always kinda pissed me off. What the hell did Crass ever do to really change anything? Both good bands though. Only difference is Crass I consider a good punk band while I consider The Clash a great rock and roll band.

Could just be me though.

Right on. I feel the same way about the self titled LP and Complete Control. This is pumping me up, I can't wait to get my hands on it. From all the positive recommendations I hope for another life changing experience like I had with the first record.

While there are some books I've run across that fall into this category -- primarily over-analyzing books by art critics -- in general, I think this is crap. Books like this one are good.

Shouldn't have hit add comment so quick.

I was talking about The Clash with a friend of mine who is 10 years older than I, I am 34. As everything by them was out when I started to listen to them, I don't have the chronological perspective to their music some do. For me, White Riot and Atom Tan happened at the same time, though I know they didn't.

My friend prefers the older material, as that was what moved him at that age, in fact he has a hard time listening to anything past, and including Sandinista!. As much as I would have loved to see them, I did get to see The Mescalaros, so I am happy to have had my Clash flood, instead of a trickle.
