MadAsshatter: In before the misuse of hero tag trolls.

It IS a misuse of the hero tag. The tag should be bigger.

Subby is a twit.

While John Doster deserves a 'well done' and 'you're a better man than I', he doesn't really need the 'hero' tag. Makes the designation for people who really do deserve it somewhat less.

So..

TWIT!

he didn't start the fire

KyngNothing [TotalFark] 2008-09-07 06:45:59 PM
It wasn't consecutive, he took a break for a few years...

During the only break he took from the fire service in the 1940s, he earned the Purple Heart and several other military decorations fighting with the Army in North Africa.

Mr. Doster, sir, you ever make it NYC and your beer is on me.

/Them's is brass, right there.

My uncle is still a volunteer fireman at 83 years old.He started after he got back from WWII in '45.

I don't think he has put out a fire in quite a few years, but he is still a member.

God Bless You Mr. Rosewater Doster.

Seconded!

/RTFA and I'm impressed; you gotta have some massive brass if you start @ 14.

To be fair, 14 now verses 14 then probably weren't the same thing.

I could just see the outrage if a 14 year old went anywhere near a fire now-a-days.

To the (obvious) troll who said he takes work away from the paid guys; remember where the fire-service started - with volunteers.

But I knew he was a troll, still it's fun to feed one every now and again.

Good times.

Oh and he does deserve a hero tag. It's _much_ easier to fight actual fire these days than it was 40, 20, even 10 years ago.

"Later this month, the National Volunteer Fire Council will honor Doster's nearly 75 years of service with its Lifetime Achievement Award."

What a pussy.
Let me know when he actually does 75 years.

Scott77 2008-09-07 08:26:27 PM
Years ago, the town in which I'm a volunteer firefighter recognized one of my company members for 74 years of service.

Good thing too; he never made it to 75.

"Phil, you set the standard we all hope to achieve."

Take it easy there, Jake.... It'd be a shame if you punch out on full disability for spraining your wrist while posting on FARK during your shift... or maybe that's what you're after?

Dedicating your entire life to a noble cause isn't worthy of a hero tag? What the hell?

ALSO, it's almost 9/11 and only 25 replies? My god, all I can say is WTF.
