IMHO, worst Dire Straits song ever. Possiby one of the worst songs ever from anyone, and I'm a huge DS fan.

I agree. But edged out only by John Fogerty's "Centerfield" as worst song from anyone of this caliber.

Strangely enough, you're both right!

When you've got Mark Knopfler, why on earth would you need two keyboardists?

I love Dire Straits, but I've never been a fan of this song.

That seems to be the concensus in here.

This (new window), is my favourite Dire Straits piece.

Yeah the song is so-so at best but that video is a tribute to classic blooper reels and good-time sports before everything became about the money.

Oh, whoops. So I liked it.

Dire Straits is like Chicago deep-dish pizza. When it's good, it's great, and even when it's bad, it's still good.

/besides, I liked this one

Horrible, but better than "Money For Nothing."

/I also like Huey Lewis And The News

Agreed. Love DS but this song actually makes me angry.

Amen, I hate that 80's fake organ sound, makes me ill.

This song rocked... You are all losers.
The album kicked arse. Serious arse.
This song kicks you in your bullocks.

Your Jim J. Bullocks!

Lousy song by a so-so band except for 'Brothers in Arms'
and 'Making Movies'

You're thinking of Sultans of Swing.

I always liked this song for some reason. Dunno why.

My favourite is Telegraph Road.

Least favourite? I don't know but I enjoy this one.

/saw Mark Knopfler live
//best concert I've seen

So does the British version of this video have cricket and soccer bloopers?

/it's still soccer to me

alexanderplatz 2008-09-07 10:23:02 PM
Ya know, the members of DS have made some unfortunate sartorial choices in their time.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-09-07 10:48:58 PM
I think the song is ok...
at least it's upbeat and gets me in a good mood.
and if i'm brave enough... a dancin' mood.

for some reason, i've never "gotten" the line:
"sing the song about a seagull lovin' woman
Sing the song about the knife"

what are these two lines referencing?

i've always thought "song about the knife" meant DS's "Six Blade Knife" song from their debut...

i think in one of the live versions, Mark even sings "sing a song about the *six* blade knife"....
i forget which version/when, tho...

here's two other versions:

The U.K. video version:

The Live in Sydney 1986 one:

It's SWEET lovin' woman.

Sweet loving woman is self-explanatory and the knife is a 6-blade knife (new window)

The album did rock. Especially the B-side. Anything from the B-side kicks the crap out of this song (and Money for Nothing and So Far Away).

/There is no comparison to 'Brothers in Arms'

Foxxinnia 2008-09-08 12:55:36 AM
I'm going with "The Man's Too Strong" as my favorite off the album.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-09-08 01:00:15 AM
ah thank you
galumph200 and HeadLever

i guess i was just mis-interpreting it all these years [i've been listening to that album since i was three or 4]

and i was too lazy to look at the record lyric sheet.
ugh.

and AH HA!
so i WAS right about the 'knife' equals 'six blade knife' ref.
good stuff.

my fav.'s off the album are: "so far away", "your latest trick", "why worry", "ride across the river", "the man's too strong", "brothers in arms."

yarnothuntin 2008-09-08 01:49:35 AM
I've always loved this song. So, fark ya'll =).

/not subby

Assgasket 2008-09-08 06:43:09 AM
The only problem with this song was that it was overplayed. It's got a solid Knopfler boogie groove to it, and it's amusing. It's not their best work, but it's not bad, either.

What I've always loved about this video is that seems like the band is genuinely having a good time filming it. And music's always at its best when talented musicians are on stage doing it for their own enjoyment.

Great_Milenko: strangeguitar: IMHO, worst Dire Straits song ever. Possiby one of the worst songs ever from anyone, and I'm a huge DS fan.

You, sir, are a fool, and have lost any and all credibility.

bv2112 2008-09-08 11:03:42 AM
Knopfler is the man. I think his solo stuff is better than the DS stuff.

But I am not a fan of the Walk of Life at all. As has been said before, Telegraph Road is their best.

And I think having the two keyboard players is OK. I didn't mind Guy Fletcher and Matt Rollins at all when I saw him last July.

zvoidx 2008-09-08 11:04:21 AM
This song should be decreed a worldwide health hazard, the master tapes and all copies collected and burned, the ashes buried in a landfill, the landfill annihilated by a nuclear explosion, the leftover residual remains launched into space, the guy who pressed the button to launch the rocket shot.

/I don't like that song
