So everyone who voted for Reagan in '84 is a misogynist? Because I seem to recall his opponents were Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro.

I would say that Palin was picked to energize the GOP base of the religious right.

Any people silly enough to vote for McCain because Palin is a woman would just be bonus votes.

Remember, Fox News is talking only to their audience, the most supercillious mouth-breathers in the American electorate. Logic and consistency would only confuse them.

From Tammy Bruce's Wiki:

Bruce's Web site describes her as "an openly gay, pro-choice, gun owning, pro-death penalty, voted-for-President Bush progressive feminist".

Someone needs to add "self-loathing".

jerry2a 2008-09-07 04:23:55 PM
Are they naturally misguided or do they have to work at it? Most of the intelligent women I know saw through that move pretty quickly. For that matter, if you're going to vote for Palin based on her being a woman, then you might as well just vote for Obama over McCain because he's also a man. Let's just flip a farking coin - obviously a candidate's position on the issues is irrelevant.

Hers's a tip for McCain. I'm sorry if this sounds sexist, but if you're going to select a candidate because she's a woman, try not to pick one that sounds like my wife when she's annoyed that I forgot to take out the garbage or asks if I'm going to spend the whole day on the couch. My wife says that Palin is every mean, phony, popular girl in high school that you hated...the kind that wanted her nose in everybody else's business...one that is very concerned about your morality while she's secretly farking half the football team. If I agreed with her on the issues I might be able to get around that...but I don't think I can take four years of having to listen to her.

It's arguments like this that have set feminists back over and over again.

DarkJohnson [TotalFark] 2008-09-07 04:38:58 PM
I think in the future all politicians must keep their race, gender, family, sexual orientation and religion a secret from the public if they want to run for and hold office.

They can only campaign via IM or Skype (without a webcam) with filters that trap any questions that pertain to the above restrictions.

Then and only then will we have a fair and balanced election.

If Elected I promise to not be noticed.

I'm DarkJohnson and I fully endorse this comment.

/Thank you for listening.

Palin doesn't appeal to women. Only a man would seriously think that she would. We all know that chick your wife is talking about. We all hate her and see her in Palin. It's not that she's pretty it's that she uses it as a weapon. I've seen men do the same thing BTW.

crayz 2008-09-07 04:46:44 PM
Mods just deleted the "why not Palin" thread, so I'll post what I was going to write here:

1) McCain is old, has had cancer multiple times, and is a POW survivor. Each of those facts makes it highly possible, although not necessarily probable, that he'll die or become incapacitated in office (possibly even before reaching office - he could be elected in November and die before the inauguration)

2) Sarah Palin has little to no experience with the important issues facing our country. No one can find any evidence of her taking positions or even understanding the facts about really any national domestic or foreign policy issue. When asked about the surge a couple years ago she said "I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq. I heard on the news about the new deployments, and while I support our president, Condoleezza Rice and the administration, I want to know that we have an exit plan in place; I want assurances that we are doing all we can to keep our troops safe. Every life lost is such a tragedy. I am very, very proud of the troops we have in Alaska, those fighting overseas for our freedoms, and the families here who are making so many sacrifices." Not only does this show she wasn't keeping current with the most important political issue of the day, but her half-hearted opinion (wanting an exit plan) doesn't even agree with McCain

3) She's been involved in a number of abuse-of-power scandals while in office, the most serious and recent being trying to fire her ex-brother-in-law, a state trooper, then firing the public safety commissioner because he wouldn't comply, then lying about doing so, and now finally trying to cover up the whole situation

4) She has a very limited experience in government, running a town of only 6,000 people, and then running a very small state with a very unique set of issues and circumstances (i.e. nearly 100% of its revenue is from oil profits/taxes and the federal dole). To my knowledge she has almost no political accomplishments to show for this time, and has some failures (e.g. the sports complex in Wasilla, which was a large part of how she turned a surplus into a huge debt for the small town). So we really have no idea if she's capable of governing

Bottom-line, we know little-to-nothing about her, and most of what we do know isn't good. And she may wind up running the most powerful nation in the world in four and a half months. That has me pretty terrified

It shouldn't play a role in politics but it does. I don't like rewarding people that behave like assh*oles. There are enough candidates out there with similar positions - I'll pick the one that seems like more of a decent person over the one that is so smug I want to punch them in the face every time I hear them. It says a lot about this country that we actually respect someone that earned the nickname "Barracuda". Would we want to elect a guy that everybody called "The Shark"?

No. If you won't vote for Palin BECAUSE she's a woman, then you're a sexist. If you won't vote for Obama BECAUSE he's black, then you're a racist. If you vote for Obama simply because he's black then you're stupid. And let's not pretend that's the only reason people like him...didn't work for Jessie Jackson or Alan Keyes.

crayz: Bottom-line, we know little-to-nothing about her...And she may wind up running the most powerful nation in the world...

This is the strength of all arguments against her and her ticket. If the Republicans want their candidates to be taken seriously then she needs to be fully reviewed by the press.

Health issues aside, there are other ways McCain might suddenly not be around - his VP choice is important and to make an educated decision we need to hear her responding to tough questions.

Until then, she's a liability.

Yeah, but you get a few points for each kid. Become a grandmother before 45 (well, unless you're poor, black and/or hispanic), and that's a free pass, too.

(Just ignore who's raising the kid or that the baby's doped up on Benadryl at rallies.)

From this LA TImes piece (new window).

"Americans have an unhealthy desire to see average people promoted to positions of great authority. No one wants an average neurosurgeon or even an average carpenter, but when it comes time to vest a man or woman with more power and responsibility than any person has held in human history, Americans say they want a regular guy, someone just like themselves. President Bush kept his edge on the "Who would you like to have a beer with?" poll question in 2004, and won reelection."

I couldn't have said it better myself.

In our high school the head cheerleader got pregnant right after graduation.

The senior girl on the debate team became a chemical engineer with a second degree in neuro-psychology.

One wonders how we'd fare if we insisted that surgeons be no more skilled than grocery clerks, and that the companies we work for assign the CEO position based on a chili cook-off.

Sounds like an elitist to me. Unfortunately the attitude of most Americans is that they don't want a President who's smarter than they are...all of those big words confuse them I guess. Personally, I'm the opposite when it comes to things like that. I want the guy operating on my brain to have the best education and I don't want to understand a single word he says when he explains the procedure. If it sounds like something I could do myself then I know he's not qualified. Same thing for my President.

In Atlas Shrugged, the Looters and Moochers often sought out and promoted their own 'average' kind and did what they could to live off the brain trust of the above average members of society.

Like Taggart's choice for a wife helped him be seen as an 'average' person and aided him become more powerful.

Maybe it's not exactly where you were going but it felt thematically in sync.
