"He was a real-life 007, getting through a tremendous number of women and doing all kinds of spectacular stunts to evade the Nazis," said Ryan, the author of The Hornet's Sting, published by Piatkus. "When he was holed up in Copenhagen he was sleeping with both the mother and daughter of the house, without either knowing."

That's a lot of boobies.

Arrows and quarrels are good murder weapons. Apparently you can't get any ballistics off of them and they don't make much noise.
There was a murder about 20 years ago at the UBC parking lot with a crossbow. Never found the killer.

He's either a great spy or a horrible lover. Bond would have parlayed it into a threesome though.

The escape across the North Sea in an old Hornet is well-documented, at least. As is his intelligence gathering regards German Radar.

Some of the WWII resistance types had balls of solid chrome-vanadium steel. Of course, we very often don't get to hear it, because clandestine work self-selects for quiet types.

You guys might want to read up about the kind of crazy stuff the OSS and MI were during the war. This isn't some crazy old man's delusions.

Just some of the declassified stuff will astound, I can only imagine the stuff they haven't told about yet.

FTFA: Sneum chose a longbow because he did not want the sound of a bullet to be traced back to her flat.

Because nobody could possibly look at an arrow stuck in a body and deduce where the arrow came from?

Methinks he hadn't thought his cunning plan all the way through.

Well, when the guy clutches his neck and spins around it makes it a bit difficult to figure out where it came from, especially when you were looking for enough time to escape.

Hell, in your world, why would a sniper bother covering muzzle flash and using suppression knowing that a CSI team will be able to instantly determine the ballistics?

Hero? Assassins are not heroes. Not even failed assassins.

Mongo cut wood 2008-09-07 06:21:16 PM
Glad his target was Himmler and not Hitler. Killing Hitler would have prolonged the war cause the person who took his place would have been a better commander. Hitler was his own worse enemy with his psychological and ego problems. Himmler's demise would have been a true blow to the Germans. IMHO

svenbertil: Hero? Assassins are not heroes. Not even failed assassins.

The end of the article is much more interesting:

Sneum had more success with other missions. He filmed German radar installations, often under the noses of the German guards, with a camera provided by MI6. He flew to Britain with his films in a Hornet Moth biplane he had found minus its wings in a barn. He and a friend, Kjeld Pedersen, rebuilt it and took off from a field.

Halfway across the North Sea Sneum had to venture out on the wing in thick fog to refuel the plane from a can of petrol while Pedersen tried to keep it steady.

Debate all you want about heroism, but refueling a shaky, open-cockpit plane, over cold water with no hope of rescue, takes a serious pair of titanium-clad balls.

ChuckyV [TotalFark] 2008-09-07 06:25:44 PM
I'm willing to give him the Hero tag for his other exploits but his plot to kill Himmler with a bow and arrow gets the Fail tag.

/Back to working out my plot to kill Osama with a rusty corkscrew and needle-nose pliers (provided he shows up).

j0ndas 2008-09-07 06:26:56 PM
Yep, Hitler was a nut job. Taking him out would have been a really bad idea - he might have been replaced with an actually competent leader, one who didn't slay Jews or waste troops invading Russia. Properly led, Germany could easily have stomped all of Europe up to a little inside the Russian border, and extending the war just a few years would have given them The Bomb, thus making it nigh-impossible to get Europe back.
