I wish I would've been responsible enough to skip out on my mortgage payment.

I wonder if they'll bail my business out when I make stupid decisions and it fails.

A federal bee business is exactly what this country needs.

Not BEADS.

VP Dick Cheney to announce shortly after that the Third Amendment no longer applies to these houses, as the first military budget reduction he has approved.

Who the hell do you think created FNM and FRE? There has always been an implicit guarantee that the Government would step in to backstop them.

Are they going to publish a list of all the people who got bailed out and where they live? I assume I'm invited to dinner.

thesandbender 2008-09-07 12:33:42 PM
So... we're putting two companies that failed into the hands of a government that ran up a few trillion dollars worth of debt.

This will end well.

Mmmmmmm it's times like this I really love living in Canada.

Someone should make the "HAW HAW HAW" guy for the US economy. Our country had a good run, but it didn't outlast Rome. Ohhhhhh well.

What will this do to house prices? I'm buying in 2010 and want the house to be as cheap as possible.

Because if there is one thing history has proven, it's that the Federal Government is a well-oiled and efficient engine of commerce.

Right, because McCain did this in the first place, let's elect him.

Makes perfect sense.

hyperflame 2008-09-07 12:36:34 PM
I'm shocked that the federal government did this now. It'll bring the economy back on the minds of voters.

You would think that the Republicans would have delayed doing this until at least after the elections.

Take the money spent on department of homeland security to back them up.

Oh, yeah, that would mean no more DHS, TSA, etc...

Except that everyone gets reamed because the fed will just print more money and give it to the government to pay for the bailout, thus making all your money worth less.

pxlboy [TotalFark] 2008-09-07 12:37:46 PM
i saw this on the front page of the paper, right next to a smaller front page story about a company laying off 500 employees.

doin' a heckuva job!

fosborb 2008-09-07 12:37:54 PM
I remember a month ago when the Fark Independents were telling everyone that allowing the government to do this wasn't a bailout.

Bad analogy. The stockholder (the owners) aren't getting bailed out. They will receive nothing or next to nothing. The debtholders who had an implicit guarantee from the Federal Government are getting the aid.

Weaver95 [TotalFark] 2008-09-07 12:39:09 PM
Paulson said the actions were being taken because "Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are so large and so interwoven in our financial system that a failure of either of them would cause great turmoil in our financial markets here at home and around the globe."

Call it what you will, but we just nationalized our first industry. What's next? healthcare? Oil companies? software? farms/food production?

ChicagoJohn: This is awesome. The government is really good at fixing things and taking care of us.

Just remember - they are from the government and they're here to help you.

Along with "Check's in the mail" and "I promise to pull out", isn't that the three greatest lies?

Privatized profits, socialized risk.

I tried using this excuse to get a ride in a fighter jet. Turns out all the taxes I've paid over my life would buy me about 30 seconds of jet fuel.

Don't worry, we'll still be known as "The United States of America", but that's just a formality for whomever decides that they want to collect on the debt we owe.

jfarkinB [TotalFark] 2008-09-07 12:41:09 PM
But remember, it's only "redistribution of wealth" when a DEMOCRAT adminstration does it.

galleech: Bad analogy. The stockholder (the owners) aren't getting bailed out. They will receive nothing or next to nothing. The debtholders who had an implicit guarantee from the Federal Government are getting the aid.

So the guys who were too stupid and/or greedy to bother with due diligence AND who lied to government regulators and investors are getting a nice cozy government bailout. Investors and taxpayers get screwed.

yeah. great move. i'm sure THAT won't have market repercussions.
