...less-frequent water changes because of the zoo's conservation efforts...

So being green causes green? Unintended consequences strikes again.

The fact that they do not turn green in any other zoo is, I guess, unimportant.

Except that they have, in several other zoos. It's pretty easy to clear up with various cleaners in the water, or so I hear. They used electron microscopes to check out the bears fur and see the algae growing inside the hairs at San Diego and in samples from several other zoos. Read "Life at the Zoo: Behind the Scenes with the Animal Doctors" by Phil Robinson for the extended version.

/not that abnormal, not worth worrying about
//know some polar bears so... kick, replies, etc.

FAIL

I remember green polar bears in the Baltimore Zoo 25 years ago.

Polar bear fur is actually clear. Anything colored inside it would tint it. The individual hairs achieve total internal reflection, bouncing whatever sun there is all the way down to their skin, which is black. TMYK.

They get the green appearance at the San Francisco Zoo .Its kind of a seasonal thing.

Exactly, the National Zoo in DC has a problem with this every single summer. I have seen their polar bears green, although never as vividly green as this bear.

/Hey look minmods, the sun is rising! Bet you've never seen that from your basement, either.

Look at the pot belly on that bear! Fat!

We are witnessing the evolution of a species - this bear is simply getting prepared for the forecast greening of the polar region so he can blend right in.

Lame headline.

Also- has this zoo not heard of chlorine? Or getting divers in with scrub brushes and vacuums?

Xoc 2008-09-07 01:10:04 PM
This is part of the polar bear's cunning plan to escape and blend into the environment. When the polar bears sneak up on you from the tall grass, you'll realize that Stephen Colbert is right.
