..well, i'm more of a bass player, and not a very fantastic one at that, but that sounded way better than anything i can accomplish on a lead.

TeddyBallGame [TotalFark] 2008-09-07 08:59:58 AM
I had a 50 watt Gorilla Amp about 20 years ago and it had the same super crappy distortion setting I'm hearing here.

Smaerd 2008-09-07 09:44:13 AM
This dude's not completely talentless (read: better than me)... he just needs to either slow it the hell down or pick better transitions. He seems to go from OK mini-riffs to complete garbage, rinse repeat.

SnarfVader 2008-09-07 09:50:12 AM
Meh. That the song's already available for download for Rock Band. I aced the solo part.

FlashHarry [TotalFark] 2008-09-07 09:52:34 AM
wtf is that guitar tone? it sounds like a kazoo!

here's a hint the pros have known for years, kids - you can get kickass distortion by cranking up a small tube amp (fender champ, tweed deluxe, et al.).

Slaxl [TotalFark] 2008-09-07 10:16:57 AM
At last, a guitar thread where everyone agrees that the tune being played isn't something they'd pay to hear. Miracles do happen.

/My guitar legend is better than yours.

Learn. Your. Scales.

Barring random frets while scrubbing away like hell is not music. It's noise.

When you get near a melody, play it.

That's what I thought...

Some of the stuff he plays may be in a scale, but once he gets up higher he's just hitting high notes for the sake of hitting high notes and playing fast.

ElRonHubbardsBalls 2008-09-07 11:18:26 AM
Sounds like me playing lead.

/I play drums

Ok, so, he's at least go an inkling of the pentatonic. That's good. That + his budding knowledge of the power chord, especially e minor, will go a long way.

The lack of sustain is what gets me. My first practice amp also had no reverb, echo, delay or chorus. And my first guitar lacked the ability to hold a note. Bad combination.

"the power chord, especially e minor"

sorry, by definition, the power chord is the tonic + the fifth, ergo is neither major nor minor as it is not a triad.

/takes meds
//as you were

When I got my first electric guitar (a Custom Kraft) at age 14 or so, I didn't have an amp. I just plugged the guitar into my cassette deck's record-in mic jack and cranked the recording level to max, then played through my stereo.

I got way better distortion out of that than this guy's got.

/Now I play a Les Paul through a Fender tube amp, and it's orgasmic.

It means you see it everywhere. Since I'd never seen it before I doubt it is actually ubiquitous.

I think you want "obligatory." Not necessary, but offered out of custom.

Yup, the Fred Durst one was definitely worse.

I came in here for the Eddie Van Halen video. Because no matter how little you try, someone will always be worse.

daveydave 2008-09-07 11:54:22 AM
I heard nothing. I think that's because I am a guitar teacher (banjo, mandolin, fiddle as well) and I block out that distorted wailing crap, my brain doesn't even register it.

Yes, awful.

But I'd kinda like to have that silly guitar back, now.

This kids was just wanking, but there are some actual bands with actual hit records who play guitar solos almost this bad.

"Angry Chair" by Alice in Chains, for example, has one of the worst solos in history

daveydave 2008-09-07 11:57:15 AM
pureobscure: Yup, the Fred Durst one was definitely worse.

The Fred Durst one was edited. Him singing and messing around was during sound check. He was farking around, then they tagged on the stadium full of fans cheering at the end.

/Durst still sucks, but at least knows he's not a lead guitarist

CravenMorehead 2008-09-07 11:58:18 AM
Kind of tragic that his fingers are sewn together but I've seen worse.

Nick Nostril 2008-09-07 11:58:37 AM
I thought the solo in the ubiquitous "Final Countdown" video was worse. Kid needs more practice and a better amp/effects.

Yeah, but he's trying. The fail part is that he recorded it.

yoursweatersux 2008-09-07 12:09:08 PM
No... nobody should be sticking up for this dude. That solo was actually ear rape.

I'm so offended by the mentality of that solo that I'm angry (DURRR IF I HIT A LOT OF NOTES QUICKLY THEN I'M MAKIN TEH LEAD SOLO). And furthermore, if you insist on playing something so unmelodic and terrible... please, at least don't post it up until you can play it without many many mistakes.

Poor concept, poor not choice, poor execution. Ear rape.

Fapper Dan 2008-09-07 12:09:20 PM
I came here to tell people who haven't seen them yet about the 'shreds (new window)' series. Abox beat me to it. If you haven't seen them, watch a few. They get funnier the more you watch. Brilliant parody done by a guy who watches the vids very carefully and is probably a pretty accomplished player. It's hard to suck funny unless you're actually good.

DrumCorpsAlum 2008-09-07 12:09:32 PM
It's pure genius. I've analyzed the structure of it, and it's based entirely on the French 6th chord. He inverts in in the second measure, and then proceeds to modulate through every single key.

Brilliant!

Tommy Moo 2008-09-07 12:11:32 PM
That was pretty awful, but I do submit that it can't possibly be worse than what I would do on a real guitar. I'd probably just pick one string and hold it like you do in Guitar Hero and wonder why it doesn't sound anything like Cult of Personality.

allestelle 2008-09-07 12:12:20 PM
The distortion was a little out of control (maybe more than a little), and the solo was out of context, but it wasn't that bad to me. I'm sure I'll get crap for saying that. It's certainly not something I'd listen to - as I said, that distortion was terrible, but I have certainly heard worse.

That being said, the rock fingers at the end were over the top.
