I've always been of the opinion that the only thing that explains super skinny smart people is that SOMEHOW working your brain harder burns more calories or keeps your metabolism up. Otherwise I just can't explain it.

Well, it does explain MY fat ass.

And Oreos. Definitely Oreos.

^ Now that I think about it I don't think I know any smart people who are fat.

All I know is since I've started grad school I've been gaining weight. I've been at the computer for most of the day typing up and researching different shiat. Most days I'm not doing much besides reading, studying, and typing. Then I'm with the kids then I sleep.

"Those who had a more demanding mental task were more stressed and ate more," Tremblay explained.

I usually forget to eat or drink until 3 or 4 in the afternoon and then pig out at dinner and while I'm doing stuff at night. That's not helping either.

However when I was an undergrad I actually lost weight and was in great shape probably because of the sports I played. That and I maybe spent 3 hours max on school work a week. This time I'm actually trying to freaking learn something.

I'm guessing it's because of all the awards dinners and luncheon meeting and crap you have to go too when you've got degrees out the yin yang.

But who am i to guess? I've only got an associates.

Your brain does burn a lot of calories when at work. Hard studying will burn a lot.

So being on Fark the whole day must make you skinny as a rail.

FTFY.
Most lawyers don't engage in much intellectual activities.

There are some fat college professors, but only few. Probably because students make fun of their beer bellies in the class evaluations.

Thems the magic words!
From everything I've read/heard, you need to be having small snacks through the day with moderate/small lunches and definitely a smaller dinner.

That, or you just hate children.
Why do you hate children, Gwendolyn?

Firemarshalbill 2008-09-06 10:16:54 PM
Then cat pics and the internet are actually intellectual activity? I doubt it.

Firemarshalbill 2008-09-06 10:17:55 PM
I'd suggest intellectual activities require more sitting and less actual physical movement as the reason why.

Not that your brain has to fire neurons in different sections.

I've always thought that it's because smart people are smart enough to notice when they're over eating and cut back. As opposed to those that just shovel down everything they can get their hands on.

No, hon. It says intellectual activities. What we do here is the polar opposite of intellectual. Why we all don't look like the Goodyear blimp is a testament only to the power of meth and caffeine. And that alcohol consumption tends to make one vomit before exploding.

The brain constitutes ~2% of total body weight but consumes a disproportionate 25% of total oxygen, most of which is used to produce ATP for electrical activity. Glutamate-generated electrical activity alone accounts for ~80% of total brain ATP consumption.

Since I quit smoking and redoubled my music studies my ass has been getting fatter.
Not by much mind you, as I am still skinny enough to make fun of you fat bastards.

Ser Kheru 2008-09-06 10:40:50 PM
Okay, I'll admit that in my first year of grad school I gained weight but then I had the common sense to go "hey, I'm getting fat. I should do something about that." A few months and several better habits later, problem solved.

Also, since when did studying 14 people count for anything? I'm sure I could find 14 people at my school to justify most any conclusion I wanted.

Relatively speaking, posting on Fark is a very intellectual activity compared to most other activities that occur in the great nation of the U.S. of A.

Lawyer here-- this effect is definitely real and I'd guess they are correct that it's psychosomatic.

My job is stressful and intense, all day long I'm talking and/or writing. But it doesn't really involve physical exertion, unless you count grinding your teeth and turning farking red at times (on the bad days). When you have time for lunch, you want to eat and sometimes overdo it to sort of splurge. At the end of the day, you are usually mentally exhausted and it takes a LOT to make yourself exercise.

I don't know if it's boredom or some form of procrastination- I recall in law school I'd be up late studying and for once, clean up, or eat something, even if I'd eaten plenty earlier. And maybe a form of confusion- because you've worked your mind, you FEEL tired like you would after expending a bunch of calories, but in reality you haven't.

MajorGroove 2008-09-06 10:44:12 PM
When I started med school, my weight started creeping up, mostly from stress eating. When third year rolled around and I started my clinical rotations, I was introduced to the concept of "prophylactic eating": you'd eat as much as you could whenever you could, because God only knew when you'd eat again! At 9 AM, you might have a whole 8-hour case in the OR ahead of you, or you might have a couple two-hour surgeries and then a break. As a student, you just never know where you'll be sent or what you'll be doing.

So, yeah. Before I brought that back under control, I was on my way to becoming a fat MD!

sombreradoraloca 2008-09-06 10:45:48 PM
I think the only reason I'm maintaining a constant weight in law school is pure, unadulterated terror.

Waking up at exactly 7:30 every morning with no alarm only to launch immediately into a full rundown of everything I need to do is the only reason I get out of bed.

Guilt and fear are motivators.

"We have found that mental work represents a stress factor that stimulates food intake," said study co-author and kinesiologist Angelo Tremblay.

...

He stressed that previous studies have shown that mental work does not lead to an increase in the amount of calories burned.

Nah, it's because you're chained to the desk/computer/whatever for hours at a time. It isn't just "stress eating" that helps keep one fat, it's the lack of exercise and the fast or skipped or minimal lunches. By the time 7pm rolls around (and I decide to stop working), dinner is looking reaaally good. I've tried breaking off work to eat earlier, but it's not always easy to do.

I lost weight in law school, probably because I found that walking after classes was a great way to get rid of stress and helped me wind down and actually get my brain to sleep. There was also a time where I didn't eat much, but did hit the bottle pretty much every night, then around finals I wouldn't eat anything because I was too terrified of the exams.
