I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing, although the $1M can't hurt.

A school administrator smarter than a fifth grader? I have a feeling she cheated.

If money talks, she just won a "spokesbundle".

CowboyNinjaD 2008-09-06 07:07:05 PM
You have to give her points for bravery. Let's say she choked and lost. It's bad enough if you're a real estate agent or some other bullshiat, but a superintendent would blow all her credibility.

A Georgian smarter than a fifth grader? Now we know the fix is in.

That's great but my shadenfreude would love it had she lost.

Ahhhh the system works, and a school system is funded the way it should be, by superintendents winning the money on a game show.

I Like Bread 2008-09-06 07:15:21 PM
She had plenty of practice playing "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader's Parent".

OmarShamshoon 2008-09-06 07:16:21 PM
Win/Win for Supernintendo Chalmers.

She gets a million bucks, which is enough to take a nice long sabbatical right after she tells the naysaysers to fark off.

Then she gets to be a true poster child for Georgians to aspire to a fifth grade education. Its like a commercial for her state schools.

I watched the show for the third time ever. I don't hate it. The questions are pretty difficult. One of the questions for 4th grade geography was to identify the other neighbor of a Central American country. How many 4th graders could answer that question after the chapter test that they crammed for?

The show is really "Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader's Textbooks?".

Arkcon 2008-09-06 07:16:25 PM
I'd like to read the article before this one, where people criticized her -- better if it was video. I'd like to see the face of the people who just had to point out she should have better things to do with her life. They must have faces that look like they've been sucking on lemons for the past 20 years.

/That sucking sound was the sound of a million Farkers making the same face in response to this post

If she didn't take unauthorized time off of work to be on the show, then her critics can STFU about "having better things to do".

From Wikipedia: Cox made national news in 2004 by proposing to strike the word "evolution" from Georgia textbooks and replace it with the phrase "biological changes over time." In justifying her decision, she claimed evolution was a buzzword that created problems for teachers in conservative and rural areas, and that she had not been attempting to water down the subject matter. Former President Jimmy Carter criticized Cox, saying he was "..embarrassed by Superintendent Kathy Cox's attempt to censor and distort the education of Georgia's students... there can be no incompatibility between Christian faith and proven facts concerning geology, biology, and astronomy. There is no need to teach that stars can fall out of the sky and land on a flat earth in order to defend our religious faith."

Truly, as much as I hate the "intelligent design" movement, that's not a bad idea. If all it takes to shut people up and get on with teaching science is to couch evolution in a euphemism, that's a small sacrifice to make.

SeeMatrism: Too bad none of the money will be going towards the districts that need it most.

I don't get this. I grew up in a middle-class household, my parents busted their asses working a couple jobs to pay the price of admission into a Chicago suburb that was situated in a growing and property-tax-rich school districts that drew good teachers and had great programs. I was blessed with parents that cared, but I understood that some people couldn't make the jump.

Now, I live in Arizona and here a student can go to ANY public school in ANY district in the state, OR they have the ability to attend a charter school (which include performing arts schools, trade schools, tech schools, science and honors acadamies). My property taxes are $1500 per year (up from $1359) on my 4-br, 2000 sq ft suburban Phoenix home. It sure seems like if a place like this can do this, any place can. It just takes a will to do something other than biatch!

Now granted, the education system here is still woefully underfunded (I donate directly to the teacher and school so I know that it gets where it should and the state reimburses me up to $200 to do so through an income tax credit!) and the large immigrant (legal and illegal) population pose their own challenges, but at least the one thing you can't do is complain that every student doesn't have the chance to get the best education the state is willing to offer.

Vangor [TotalFark] 2008-09-06 07:54:59 PM
binaroundsum he has lost what few marbles he may have had.

What specifically was incorrect about his statement? If a Christian or any religious person wants to reconcile their faith with modern scientific knowledge, I am in full support. Changing the terminology is absurd because if we're speaking as she was not of numerous more features regarding the Theory of Evolution then those are what people disagree with, not the fact of allele frequencies in populations changing over time.

If you mean the star comment, I believe it refers to a ridiculous mistranslation in the King Jame's Bible which, if literally interpreted, suggests stars fell from the sky and assaulted someone.

Sum Dum Gai that's not a bad idea

As I noted, it is a bad idea. I would not want religious belief to influence science education and we should all fear when people attempt to. Further, even the worst offenders of butchering scientific understanding such as AiG and CSE admit that allele frequencies in populations change over time. To say 'biological changes over time' is to only suggest this phenomenon, the mere fact of evolution, rather than the Theory including descent with modification and common ancestry.

That would be as worthless to almost everyone as changing marriage to union. I simply do not see the point in letting delusion dictate education one iota.

Three
