Huge VELVET fan, and Berlin is the only Lou Reed album I really like

And I also have a copy of Metal Machine Music, and despite what Lester Bangs says, it is NOT a good album for hangovers

Did you know that "Berlin" was supposed to be a double album?
But the produer [Bob Ezrin] and record company got Reed to cut a bunch of songs...

[interestingly enough, PF's "The Wall" - also produced by Ezrin - was supposed to be a 3 record set, but it was cut down to two discs.... hmmm]

I'd say it's one of Reed's best discs... along with "Transformer", and the often-overlooked "Coney Island Baby" and "Street Hassle"]

re: "New York"... i think it's a good album... but i don't get all the lavish praise that is thrown at/rained down on, that album...
It has a handful of great tracks, the rest just don't do much for me....
but that's just my opinion, man.

I preferred the Quine-Saunders era, but I'll give the new version a try

- It's certainly a phenomenon in all walks of life.

- What do you mean?

- Well, at one time, you've got it, and then you lose it, and it's gone forever. All walks of life: George Best, for example. Had it, lost it. Or David Bowie, or Lou Reed...

- Some of his solo stuff's not bad.

- No, it's not bad, but it's not great either. And in your heart you kind of know that although it sounds all right, it's actually just shiate.

- So who else?

- Charlie Nicholas, David Niven, Malcolm McLaren, Elvis Presley...

- OK, OK, so what's the point you're trying to make?

- All I'm trying to do is help you understand that The Name of The Rose is merely a blip on an otherwise uninterrupted downward trajectory.

- What about The Untouchables?

- I don't rate that at all.

- Despite the Academy Award?

- That means fark all. Its a sympathy vote.

- Right. So we all get old and then we can't hack it anymore. Is that it?

- Yeah.

- That's your theory?

- Yeah. Beautifully farking illustrated.

"You ain't shiat, man. Your story's a joke.
You should package it with a last smoke and six feet of rope."

wow, thanks. That's some piece of trivia I didn't know. The idea of a 2 disk Berlin sounds really exciting, as for the Wall... not so much. I think it would have been filler-city at this point.

and NuttierThanEver as for New York, its a pretty decent album too, id actually really need to listen to it again, but I remember being pleasantly surprised

Transformer, New York and the Blue Mask are the only albums of his I've even been able to tolerate.

Transformer is one of my favorite albums of all time, tho.

yeah... a three disc set of "the Wall" *would* be a bit too much...

actually, part of [most of?] the stuff/songs that were cut from "The Wall" found their way onto "the Final Cut" three years later.

eh, can't say I've been that much impressed with Lou's post-velvet work. I have Berlin, Transformer and Blue Mask, but outside of a few tracks, I rarely listen to them.

"Berlin" is Lou Reed's most depressing album? Subby has obviously never heard:

"Busload of Faith" from New York is quite superb.

Berlin is no doubt his finest hour though.

Here is some wiki on the Reed album "Sally Can't Dance":

While the record was a hit and elevated Reed's status as a star, he reportedly was disappointed in the album's production (in which he took a largely passive role) and the treatment of the songs. "It seems like the less I'm involved with a record, the bigger a hit it becomes. If I weren't on the record at all next time around, it might go to Number One."

Funny.
"Kill Your Sons" is my favorite from that record.

I seem to recall hearing that Reed's favorite record in his catalog is "Blue Mask" but that was MANY years ago.

I've got most of Reed's stuff - Berlin and New York are the only ones that get played. For the rest I agree with Renton.
Songs for Drella, with John Cale is my favourite post-VU Reed effort.

Berlin and Ecstasy are his two best albums.

For whatever reason, I never got into the Berlin album. However, I saw this film a month or so back and it completely blew me away. It might be the only concert film to make me cry.
