Metallica hasn't not sucked since 1991. It's now 17 years later. I don't think I'm going to waste my money or time attempting to acquire this album.

HA! The last good album by that band was Justice for All, and that was a stretch.

System of a Down put out better albums... as well as the Moistboys.

almost everything that was new material has been bad, I loved that they re-released garage days, and i kinda enjoy the S&M, but all studio work has been mind numbingly bad.

You're calling And Justice a "stretch", what the hell is your criteria for a good album?

What?
The Unforgiven III in the track list?

Downloading "Buying" it as we speak.

Might not be so bad after all (Although the single did really suck)

Don't care how good it is. I'm still pissed about the Napster affair and them suing their fans.

RetroGnome 2008-09-06 12:02:01 PM
I used to be a huge Metallica fan, had wall banners and all their albums. Had all the tab books too, then they release the black album, followed by Load.

Haven't listened to their albums since.

I always wondered why they hated Napster when it was pirated bootlegs that made them popular in the first place.

FruitlandGenerics [TotalFark] 2008-09-06 12:02:42 PM
My question is - have you heard the first 3 singles?

Me, I like them very much. The last 3 minutes of "The Day That Never Comes" is as good as anything on "Justice" and "My Apocalypse" and "Cyanide" are great as well. No, it's not gonna be "Puppets". But nothing is. AC/DC had only one "Back in Black", Slayer only had one "Reign in Blood," and everything else is gonna pale (at least slightly) in comparison.

So far, from what I've heard, it's the first new Metallica since 1991 I'm not dreading buying.

1:52 Alriiight! guitars..
2:30 The rythm is not very congruent and I'm already annoyed by Hammet's simple two-note guitar background

So, what about the 3 singles so far? Your thoughts?

And what they've REALLY needed for the past 10 years is an editor. Compare the CD version of "Some Kind of Monster" with the video edit. Takes out almost 4 minutes and turns it into a great song instead of a snoozefest.

Came here to say something to this effect. I was just listening to High Voltage yesterday and realized how over-produced and sterile most rock has become. Bands need to get rid of big name producers, can the software and just get back in the studio and crank out raw, riff-heavy rock and get it on tape.

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2008-09-06 12:19:27 PM
i've heard parts of it so far, and it is pretty good.

And if Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins be convinced (and they were) then that helps.

On the charts maybe. They were ahead of their time. The quality work was all pre Brian Johnson. Afterwards it's all popmetal.

The 6 songs on metallica.com are kick-ass.

Everyone who hates on Metallica because they didn't like Load or Reload or Black, or because Lars says "hey, trade our live stuff to anyone you want, but dont trade our studio albums", is either an asshole, a retard, or a retarded asshole.

I think you might be forgetting that there was no such thing as pop metal at the time. Back In Black is the definitive AC/DC album.

beerrun: I was just listening to High Voltage yesterday and realized how over-produced and sterile most rock has become.

The recording industry is all about money.
You get more money from more sales.
You get more sales by pandering to the widest demographic.

This means, you water it down as much as you can, but just little enough to keep it recognizable. But, the more generic it is, the better for the bottom line.

Incidentally, the revelation you had above, was the same revelation, back in the 70's, that led to the invention of Punk Rock.

Loved Back in Black when it came out. Still love it in fact, but I'm still partial to the Bon Scott era. There's a certain ballsy rawness to those albums that just can't be duplicated and no one, NO ONE sang like Bon.

HeadbangerSmurf [TotalFark] 2008-09-06 12:30:26 PM
I've heard the beginning and the end of the new single. The beginning put me to sleep but the end sounded like vintage Metallica. On that note, I will not be buying this CD because I think the way they treated their fans was bullshiat and I hope they all die of an impacted colon or something. Yes, I'm holding a grudge.

ekdikeo4: I think you might be forgetting that there was no such thing as pop metal at the time. Back In Black is the definitive AC/DC album.

Only because of the big hype with it's release. Everyone was wondering, (as was I. Get off my lawn...) if the new singer had what it took to fill Bon's shoes. At first glance, he did. But to listen to a little more and compare to the older stuff, he really didn't. Personally, the lead from Krokus would have been better. Just listen to Long Stick Goes Boom. Back In Black is good and I certainly think it deserves most of the praise it gets, it's just too bad it took that long for people to get into AC\DC.

/and what if I just don't like Metallica just because? Am I still a retard?

We'll have to agree to disagree. "What Do You Do For Money Honey" is one of the best songs of their career. I know all the old stuff. I love it, I do. But I'll stick to my assertion BiB is their best album.

I fully reserve the right to hate on Load and ReLoad. They killed my band. I cried when I saw the video to "Until It Sleeps." My band was dead. I'd never seen a bigger sell-out in my life, and I didn't think they were capable of it, but they were. Now, it seems, there's life in the old body yet.

Well, all the stores were out of James Taylor, so I ended up with Iron Maiden, and thus started my walk along a dark path...

Seriously, just stop. I guess I'm suppsoed to appreciate rap for its lyrical greatnes or ABBA for their melodies or REM for their social consciousness?

Screw that. I want loud guitars, and there ain't a damn thing wrong (or childish) about that.

Stupid troll.

Rammstein's "Reise, Reise" was 2002 or 2003, and it's a vastly superior album.

The new Metallica album MIGHT be "the best metal album of the new millenium produced for over-the-hill metal fans who want to hear the same safe sound and vapid lyrics they've been used to for two decades."

It really does shine under that criteria.

I think it's perfectly fine to be discerning about which songs you like, or which albums you like, but when you say "Metallica sucks and they died in '91", you're kinda a douche.

So, you're not at all fitting the criteria I said :D

Re-Load was supposed to be a make up for Load, sorry about that bullshiat fellas, we're metal again....it blew goats....St. Anger was supposed to be them really going back to their roots and shredding, hell they even offered a free download of old live metallica.....blew goats....I didn't even download that shiat eithe....

I'm not falling for your bullshiat again. They suck. fark them.

Best metal album of the millennium? Get the fark out of here, has this guy not heard of a band called Meshuggah? They put this album out called obZen, THAT is farking metal.

I loved Metallica, I fully gave the Black album and Load with its edgy semen and blood artwork a chance. I couldn't do it, I was upset because of what they were. So I stand by my comment of they weren't any good after Justice with the exception of the re-release of Garage days. Those were some good covers reminiscent of old Metallica.

Bullshiat. All the reviewers and Metallica fan boys said the same shiat about St. Anger. That was a pile of dog shiat. Just because you record an album on the cheap to make it sound like shiat doesn't mean you're going back to your roots.

They're immature, arrogant assholes. "Why haven't we been de-throned?" The fark man, I can't remember the last time anyones said, "Holy shiat, Metallica is touring, we have to get tickets!" It's, "Hey I heard Metallica is in the studio, I think they're doing an album with Kenny Chesney!"

While Metallica was busy cutting their hair and writing country music, Pantera was drinking whiskey, smoking pot, touring the world and destroying arenas, while writing Vulgar Display of Power, Far Beyond Driven, and The Great Southern Trendkill. Three absolutely epic metal albums, all in the time it took Metallica to shiat out Load, a miserable follow up to the Black album.

I could point out many other bands who have done much bigger and better shiat in that timespan and since, yet somehow Metallica thinks they're the best metal band on the planet. Just goes to show how out of touch they are, and how much they think of themselves.

Cowboys From Hell, Vulgar Display and Far Beyond Driven are some of the greatest metal ever produced.. Trendkill was Pantera's St. Anger, imo.

On the topic at hand, black album, load, and reload, still have some fantastic moments, even if they aren't all thrash all the time.
