So now I have to put a speedometer on my bike? What's next? Those gay bar-end mirrors, or perhaps airbags...

Yes, all of those things

Dalar [TotalFark] 2008-09-06 11:00:39 AM
8 mph? You kidding? Walking is like 4-5mph.. are they going to ticket joggers and runners too?

melopene [TotalFark] 2008-09-06 11:04:36 AM
My old roommate took his bike from here to the SC coast (about 250ish miles) in around 10 hours, IIRC.. I could see an 8 mph speed limit being unreasonable in cases like that.

Skail [TotalFark] 2008-09-06 11:07:02 AM
8mph is unreasonable, anyway. Car drivers are constantly biatching about bikers going too slowly, so now they want to make them slower? Besides, it's on a bike path. Let bikers do what bikers do on their own path.

Meh. All this could be solved if bicyclists would be more observant and non-bicyclists (this includes bike "riders," the casual users) would be more considerate.

The Loveland bike Trail near my house has a posted sped limit of 20mph IIRC. That seems appropriate for a bike trail.

8mph for a cyclist is like telling a jogger that they have to walk instead of run.

HEY! I don't have a speedometer ;)

If they're professional bicyclists, what are they doing on amateur paths?

Do you see Ricky Bobby complaining that he can't drive 200MPH on the freeway?

Go speed on your own damn track.

No, he was racing around on city streets while blindfolded and also while wrestling with a cougar.

Mercutio879 [TotalFark] 2008-09-06 11:47:19 AM
I jog at 6-7 MPH, 8 MPH would be like lowering the speed on the interstate to 25. It's just plain stupid.

Unsung_Hero 2008-09-06 11:47:39 AM
I can do a sustained 30kph (19mph) average on my mountain bike while observing all traffic signals, so I assume I'm actually biking faster than that when you discount the periods where I'm stopped.

I'm NOT in great shape, so I assume a guy in good shape on a 10-speed is going significantly faster.

8 mph is just a way of saying you want to ticket anyone on a bike.

apiarist 2008-09-06 11:47:43 AM
Professional cyclists might slow down to 8 mph on a steep climb. I'm a 60 year old recreational cyclist, and ride once or twice a month. I average 15-20 mph without working too hard. 8 mph is a 7.5 minute mile; easily performed by recreational runners.

My thoughts exactly.

The most I ever had for my bike was a chain lock for when I rode it to school!

From TFA: illegal if you peddle faster than 8 miles per hour.

So this means I can pedal faster than 8 mph on the 30-A as long as I am not selling anything?

Would rather they enforce traffic laws for bicyclists before they get onto speed limits.

The only speed limit I would like to see would be no bicycles on roads with speed limits over 25 mph.

Crosshair [TotalFark] 2008-09-06 11:51:45 AM
Welcome to the club, now bikers know what it is like for car drivers to have to put up with artificial low speed limits. Perhaps we can put up red light cameras for bikers so we can fine them when they go through lights. For safety of course.

8 mph....I can do one legged up an incline. But if there is a road available then, I think I should be on it. And if I am sharing a path with walkers, etc. I should slow down...

How about a regulation that you can't ride faster than 8 mph within 20 feet of a pedestrian? Everybody happy!

/I bike to work, and I DO hate it when a biker whips by me from behind when I'm walking...

After that: 3 yr old kid on tricycle gets tazed and busted for not paying speeding ticket.

This. Granted, 8 mph is maddeningly slow, but you should slow down on a bike path. That's more for cruiser-type bikes anyway. If you're riding at a decent pace, get out onto the road.

Thats great, because I am just waiting to see you get hit by a semi while changing your tire, and hopefully dragged down the interstate until you are just a stain of your former stain.

Except for all the walkers/bladers/dog walkers on that trail.

I once saw a lady waling her dog. She over on the far right, Spot over on the far left.
Retractable leash joining the two. Dumb beast on both ends.

/used to ride that trail all the time

I ride all the time and train so I can ride farther and faster. We've got 32 miles of bike path along the river here. 8mph is NOTHING, 70 year old grandmas can ride that fast. Even less-than-fit amateur riders on mountain bikes with the big knobby balloon tires on them ride at least half again faster than that. There's a so-called 15mph limit here, but it's not enforced or enforceable. I'm glad I don't live where they're proposing this, they're totally on crack and need to direct their efforts towards solving real problems and leave cyclists alone.

Bicyclists should just farking stay off the street all together.

BS. They're vehicles they have no business on the sidewalk. What some cyclist need is just a kick in the head reminding them that the traffic rules apply to them too.

You don't know a damn thing about cycling, troll.

ski_adk115 2008-09-06 12:01:54 PM
That's ridiculous. On flats, I'm easily road riding(on my mtn bike no less) at about 19 mph. If it's got any downhill, it's easily 25 mph. And I'm not even that fast compared to real cyclists.

I do agree w/ mark12a -- slow down around pedestrians, alert other riders of your position ("Passing left side...Thanks! Enjoy your ride/walk"). I used to fly down the bike path along the Mohawk and used these rules everyday. It's not even for courtesy's sake either -- you gotta do it for self-preservation -- it's the gapers out there are really dangerous.

Farkomatic 2008-09-06 12:02:23 PM
This is pretty bad. Me and my 75 year old father-in-law do a 20-30 mile trip every Sat morning on one of the local bike trails around the area. We stay right around 11-13 mph and I'd say that was fairly leisurely compared to the bicycle nerds decked out like Lance Armstrong's gay brother. Those guys are hauling ass, but I've never seen that be an issue even once. "Passing on your left" (something I rarely have to say at our speeds) solves the problem.

I got introduced to biking by my co-worker who only works 6 months out of the year (semi-retired). He bicycles from here in Dayton to places like Brazil and Rio. I can't go 10 miles with a decent headwind - I have no idea how he does it - or how his ass can handle it.

dbubb 2008-09-06 12:02:50 PM
8 mph is stupid slow on a bike, but then again, I never ride on bikepaths. I don't know too many "professionals" that do either.

15 mph would be more realistic. The only problem is enforcement - does radar work at speeds that low?

Boomer Petway IV 2008-09-06 12:02:58 PM
Took my bike to Grayton Beach on that route less than a month ago, and with all the foot traffic, other tourists meandering, wooden bridges, and potholes on that path, anyone really riding would get on the road after a quarter mile anyway. That said, anyone on a rented beach cruiser would easily be breaking this ridiculous proposal, and probably never know.

I have been dying to find out and am looking for an honest answer, but when I am jaunting (I don't dare say running) I see all these cyclists, on their racing bikes, with their gear on (the spandex suits), now here's my question, and I'm totally serious, but do only men do this, I have never seen a woman. I have seen women riding bikes, just not with all the gear, just in normal clothing. Please fill me in.

Also, as I face traffic when jaunting, is it proper for me to go out into the road when passing cyclists, thus allowing them to be closer to the curb? Because often we'll do a slight dance of how to pass weaving back and forth.

Manic_Repressive [TotalFark] 2008-09-06 12:04:03 PM
I average 17mph on a mountain bike, and can hit 30+ when I want to (hard to keep it there, though). I would imagine I could go faster on a road bike with gear ratios more suited to the street. To stay around 8mph I'd have to trade my bikes in for one of those three-wheeled granny cruisers.

seminole87: wtf 8 mph is barely moving

Pretty much this! I'm a strictly recreational cyclist and hardly need to peddle to keep going at 8 mph. How about something more reasonable in the 15-18 mph range? Bikers who want to go faster could use the roads.

cjoshuav 2008-09-06 12:04:32 PM
I'm assuming that this area is as flat as the rest of Florida? If so, 8mph means barely moving the pedals in low gear. I average 12mph on a hilly route, with panniers; and usually do 15-20 on level ground.

If they want this to be a leisurely trail, that's their call. 8mph basically means no cyclists though.

otterrr 2008-09-06 12:04:32 PM
My easy going casual ride pace is ~15mph on my 24 speed knobby tire slow mountain bike. When I'm actually trying to get somewhere, 20-22mph. I can't imagine a person on a road bike, whether fixed gear or 10 speed, going slower than 20mph.

I bike to work, 6 miles each way. I average about 15-18mph. That's AVERAGE. On the nice long flat stretches, I easily maintain 20+.

This is on the road, and I do have a speedometer.

8mph is a fast walk.

Cue a fatties hate thread? As long as we're denouncing practical, healthful exercise that reduces our dependence on foreign energy sources, we might as well up our hatred of people who'd benefit the most from some fast cyclin'.
