It never ceases to amaze me.

I have a challenge for anyone (fat, thin, medium, rotund):

Stop eating for a day.
Let that hunger carry over to tommorow.
Don't eat.
Now eat.
What are you hungry for?
Yep. Not sugary shiat. Food. Meat, fruit, weeds (ruffage).

This sounds like someone has real organizational problems. I eat "health foods" and the gal and I make a plan early in the week and do a shopping trip and it's over with. If there is no plan, it isn't a big deal to improvise.

Someone is doing it wrong.

"Because they pursue purity in the food they eat, orthorexics are disgusted by processed food like macaroni and cheese. "

God willing, we will prevail, in peace and freedom from fear, and in true health, through the purity and essence of our natural... fluids. God bless you all.

Ed Finnerty: Stop eating for a day.

It always makes me laugh when so many people claim that missing a meal makes them feel like crap - headaches, lethargy, etc. There are some, of course, but for the vast majority of us a little fasting isn't going to hurt any. Hell, I generally feel better after skipping a few meals.

Raw foodists believe cooking vegetables even a little destroys their nutritional value. And eating meat is even worse, Kulvinskas said, because you eat the animal's fear.

"When they go through slaughter, they go through a lot of fear, and that fear is taken into the dietary habits of America."

I once worked in a large office with lots of health-minded people. The most health-conscious people -- the vegetarians, the mountain bikers and runners -- missed the most work.

When they did manage to make it in, their conversation would consist of:

a) Their healthy lifestyle
b) Their ill health

Semi-Sane 2008-09-06 10:44:00 AM
Using moderation is the healthiest way to live.

I have always been into eating healthy and exercising, but not excessively. Going overboard and stressing about every little calorie is not very healthy.

I read the menshealth forum once in a while and I get a kick out of the people on there who say they measure everything they eat, get severely depressed when they eat something that is even slightly unhealthy, or miss a workout.

Use moderation in all things that you do. Eat cake, but don't eat it everyday.

With psychotherapy, Charlotte Andersen was able to stop. Now she says her obsession with pure food was destroying her health.

"I was trying so hard to control how I was going to die, and in the end nobody gets to pick how they die," she said. "We only get to pick how we live, and I wasn't living."

Actually, this last little bit is fairly insightful. Kudos to Ms. Andersen for overcoming the BS and gaining wisdom in the process.

"Counting calories, nutrients and fat grams is practically a national pastime."

No; it's something practiced by a select few nitwits with nothing better to do. The rest of us eat whatever happens to be available and get off our asses to walk around every now and then. You think the Native Americans worried about how much fat free range venison has in it? The fuedal Japanese about the carb content of their rice staple diet? They ate what they had and didn't sit on a couch vegetating for 9 hours a day.

/Sick of this drivel... when is someone going to name the malady which causes vapid windbags to sound off with the latest "terrible affliction to strike at the very heart of humanity" when there's no missing white girls in the news?

Eat the animal's fear? Huh?

Don't get me wrong, I usually try and eat healthy, but I love a good pizza, and just ate a vinegar slathered plate of fish and chips last night (with a good side helping of beer). It is all about moderation, if I ate fish and chips and drank 4 pints of beer every night, I'd have problems, but I love the treat on occasion.

The problem here isn't eating healthy, it is an obsession with purity that drives the searcher to mental illness. Ultimately, it has little do with food, but with the psychosis of the individual's obsessive search for the magic formula that will bring them enlightenment/purity which finally destroys them.

While it is true that cooking vegetables (and fruits, more often) does usually get rid of some of the nutrients (fruit especially since most of the nutrients are in the skin), I'd imagine the bigger problem is that the hippies probably aren't WASHING the fruits and vegetables because ono ur wipin off nootreeunts!

I'm going with the moderation people here. I watch calories and lost about 60 pounds during the first half of the year. I watch now to maintain the loss and work out about 4 or 5 days a week. I'm in better shape than I've been since high school. Now that doesn't mean that I don't eat what I want. Because I usually watch what I'm eating I can do whatever I feel like a few days a week. I drink two or three nights a week some weeks. Other times I just have a big steak and potato. It's a good way to go, I get what I want and I feel great. Had an ice cream bar yesterday and it was marvelous.

Article reeks of:
"OMG! What is WRONG with these people? They don't live on a diet of processed junk and fast food! People are getting intelligent and considering how their food choices impact their lives?! THIS CANNOT BE. We need to scare everybody back into eating McDonald's!"

I know that they've been trying to convince us that everything and anything can kill us, but now I'm just convinced that the media has pretty much jumped the shark with this "eating healthy food can kill you" bullshiat.

That said, everything in moderation. A food obsession is as bad as any other unhealthy obsession. Also, raw food dieticians = nutters.

Yes. If ever there were a role model for people, it's Bourdain. I wish I could live like that guy... well, except for a few of the things he has eaten that are just disgusting as hell...

It certainly helps. That's why when I want cake, I always lock it in a dark compartment for perhaps an hour at 350 degrees. Cake flesh becomes so juicy and delicious after that ordeal...

Gotta throw my two cents in here. As a guy who just went out drinking with sempai, and came home and ate cookies, I can guarantee you I am not othorexic.

However, I think that discussions of orthorexics can be a negative thing. There are far too many fatties out there that will justify their poor food choices by exclaiming the dangers of watching what you eat.

For every person who's obsession with healthy eating takes a negative turn, there are 5 girls with cheesecake obsessions, and another 5 guys who think beer and pizza is a well-rounded, healthy meal.

Don't get me wrong, Chicago pizza and high class beer FTW, but as it was already pointed out, IN MODERATION.

UrinalPooper 2008-09-06 10:52:03 AM
The obsessive health-nuts I know are always getting colds, stomach bugs, the flu &c. I subsist on bacon, alcohol and energy drinks yet I haven't been sick in years. I know that's just more anecdotal crap and YMMV, but I hate bean sprouts and I hate getting colds so I'm going to stick with what works for me.

Actually, in many cases it is necessary to cook foods so that the nutrients become bioavailable. Especially in the case of plants - a lot of nutrients in plants are not very bioavailable without cooking. One mistake people do make though is to cook plant foods for too long (destroying some vitamins and other nutrients), and even worse, cooking foods like spinach in water and then pouring off the water - losing lots of nutrients in the process.

The simple fact is that these people insane. Especially this Kulvinskas guy, who sounds like a really dangerous snake-oil salesman.
