It's not $4 gas, it's $8/hr jobs that keep people living in their RVs. Heh.

when you drive $500k worth of RV, I doubt fuel prices are going to slow you down.

Personally, I'd love to rent of those giants and take the family across the country for vacation. And hey, who knows maybe some hot blonde in a Ferarri will try to fark me in some hotel swimming pool.

Freakpower [TotalFark] 2008-09-06 11:01:43 AM
So what this story is really telling me is that people have sold their homes to instead live in an RV, right?

Why is that news? It actually sounds more practical to me in today's market.

phartnocker 2008-09-06 11:26:31 AM
yeah, just in from the Ric Romero newsdesk:

Some people have a lot of money and can afford not only recreational vehicles that are crushingly expensive to the average american, but the fuel to run them and have the time and money to go on vacation whenever and wherever they want.

TFA is about RV camps being full.
Which means more RV's are being parked in camps.
Which means the RV's are being driven less.
Which would correspond with expensive gas.

dofus 2008-09-06 11:35:19 AM
Wife & I spent 8 years living full-time in a big RV. Diesel ranged between 56c/gal to somewhere around $2/gal just before we sold it. Went everywhere, saw everything, did everything, got the T-shirt AND the coffee cup. Awesome experience.

In the case of Yellowstone, a lot of the RVers are employees. They get crap for pay and have to rent a space for their house but they get to play in Yellowstone all summer.

Sudlow 2008-09-06 11:36:44 AM
A lot of these people will drive to a spot and stay there for several months. Fuel is not their biggest expense.

Ima4nic8or 2008-09-06 11:38:06 AM
Whats with the scary tag? Nothing scary here. Right now is actually a pretty good time to pick up an RV. Due to the gas cost, the purchase prices are quite low right now. Low enough to offset much of the gas cost.

Carl Sagan's Ghost 2008-09-06 11:38:09 AM

I have an RV and I am getting a kick in my wallet.....

/ use the RV to go on site with customers.
// still cheaper than flying and hotels.
/// and a hell of a lot cleaner that hotels!!
//// save gas by parking at customer site instead of commuting between hotel and customer.
\\ dont tailgate or I might flush!

xtonyx: when you drive $500k worth of RV, I doubt fuel prices are going to slow you down.

If you've spent $500k on an RV, your own dumbness will probably prevent you from leaving home. You keep trying to get in the driver's side front door.

None of the $500K coaches have a drivers side door. They're all built on commercial bus chassis. But you knew that. Or maybe you're too ill informed to know. But that didn't stop you from showing us, did it?

Nakito 2008-09-06 11:55:16 AM
Sure, you could drive an expensive, bloated, monster RV around the country, and stay in an RV camp every night parked beside other RVs. Or you could get something fun like a Mini that is actually a pleasure to drive, and stay in nice country B&Bs with clean sheets and real bathrooms. And you would actually enjoy the "driving" part of you adventure.

Never understood the RV scenario or cost-benefit analysis. But to each his or her own.

I saw one of the bus RV's towing a farking Hummer down I-70 two days ago. I was driving home from work with the cruise on 60 on the interstate because I'd like to eat instead of putting all my money into my gastank.

Or you can go boondocking out in the middle of nowhere. Nobody around but those you take with you! If you do it right, the cost-benefit is there.

/ just watch out for the bears!

I saw one towing a Lincoln, which is the chariot of choice for geezers around here. That sucker was probably getting 5 mpg.

Just got back from Burning Man...

The RV culture in the USA is doing just fine. They have plenty of money for gas. One of the guys gave me two five-gallon cans, said he was hauling too much of it around.

Really, the $4 thing isn't even slowing these people down.

My biggest beef is the fact that ANYbody with a regular license is allowed to drive these. Gramps at age 80, is allowed to drive one.

You and just about every trucker out there...

Unfortunately, the accident rate with big RVs is so low there's no justification for it. Just about everything DOT (etc) does, including where to put stop lights, is based on accident rates or congestion times.

(Now we're going to hear from every retard: "Baloney. I saw an accident once. This big RV...")

I drive about a 4 hour trip every 2nd weekend and the amount of RV's,5th wheels on the side of the highway with for sale signs on them is about 10x it was four years ago. Considering that gas is $1.33/l or about $5.30/gal I'm not at all surprised at this. Still pisses me off I could drive an hour south across the border and pay 2/3 of what I pay in Canada.

Find it hard to believe that works really well. Wouldn't they be really top heavy? Oh, looking more see it has pontoons. Guess that'd help. Still looks like you're basically driving a bus into a lake which seems unsettling to me!

RV travel is still the Great American Vacation, and it's still cheaper than a faux-fun trip to Disneyland or other high-dollar tourist traps.
