What's really weird about this is that all the still-running, pot-growing country folks around here rather like Obama. It's the folks I know living in Winston Salem and Greensboro that dislike him so much.

I suspect it's partly because the country folks talk to each other more often and keep better informed. They're also less likely to cling to a party affiliation and swallow their bullcrap.

You saw lots of Vernon Robinson (^) and Virginia Foxx (^) signs around here in 2004 in the city, but virtually none in the outlying areas. Racism was front and center in that election, with most of the ads attacking each other over who was LESS racist and hateful towards blacks and Mexicans.

It's not our farms that are filled with white trash here in NC, it's our cities.

To make the point a bit clearer, here's what the polling looks like this year for NC:

Obama 42.8
McCain 47.0
McCain +4.2

2004:Bush +12.4
2000:Bush +12.8

Obama really is stealing a crapload of voters here this time around.

Minor distinction - I don't think it's Obama stealing voters as much as they fell off the GOP truck.

So this is the entire linked article?

"Southern white voters favor McCain over Obama by a far larger margin (60% to 31%) than do white voters in any other region of the country. While McCain leads Obama by a two-to-one margin among white voters in the South, Obama is only marginally behind McCain in the Midwest (42% to 46%) and West (44% to 47%) and actually leads among white voters in the Northeast (46% to 42%)."

Really?

Which polls are you referencing? How do you get your numbers? Does the use of fractions mean we're to believe you have such a complex system it can only be expressed through fractions?

One day, in the future, I envision a world where people can click on the text of a statement and it would open some new "window" of some sort that would support a given statement.

I'm going to apply for a patent on that. Then I'm going to pitch it to WebTV and AOL.

I know where the money is at.

He didn't say he supported Obama. He did say that Obama's winning the nomination was a reason to be proud. He also hasn't been critical of Obama, as far as I know.

He's severely, severely disenchanted with the Republicans right now.

Falcc 2008-09-06 09:54:27 AM
Forget Bush's totals in these places, what were Bill Clinton's? He's supposed to be out working for Obama now, does he have a lot of support in these kinds of places he could stir up for Obama? This really seems like his kind of territory, tell some folksy stories, make a joke about Obama being the second black president, remove the "voting for one's own" factor these people have going with McCain's lack of real teeth.

Growing up in St. Louis gave me my share of exposure to racism. True, I have some hatred towards certain races due to some of their B.S.

But putting that aside, I do believe Obama will make a difference and is change we can believe in.

McPOW is the same as the old boss and nothing will change. Especially if he croaks and McFailin takes over having the voices of Bush's minions whispering into her ear on every turn.

They're voting that way because the republican party was created (in part) to free the slaves.

You should've seen him a few years ago when the Libertarians ran a had campaign against him to get his GOP spot ousted from Congress.

The one thing that keeps me from voting Barr is, "If he wasn't pushed from Congress...would he really have changed some of his views or would he still just be your standard GOP republican?"

The answer always seems to be the latter when I think about it.

Well if one would care to make an attempt to show that race is the reason for this trend, someone else would care to point out that it might actually be policy instead.

But you know that.

McCain's Southern Strategy:
Attractive and successful African-American
Attractive and successful African-American
Attractive and successful African-American

What amazes me is that I was discussing Palin with a coworker the other day and he responded that Obama only picked Biden because Biden was a white male and he needed to shore up the white male vote. When I pointed out that Obama only trailed with Southern and Appalachian white men his response was literally "So I guess you're saying that white southerners and appalacians are racist? You democrats always play the race card."

Perhaps you might want to suggest what the policy issue is that cuts so much more strongly among white males in the south that does not play so strongly among white males outside of that same geographic region.

It's already been said, but THIS - I just moved from NC after 6 years (originally from rural NY). The country folks I met didn't have a hangup about making racial jokes, but there wasn't any real vitriol behind it, just an absence of political correctness. They tended to evaluate people of both races as individuals and typically ran with friends of both races (the Latino population is mostly migrant workers and is pretty self-segregated). Mixed race groups would often good-naturedly tease each other back and forth on racial terms in ways that left me dumbfounded at first.

The folks in cities like Raleigh and Greensboro though...eww. I called them "trailer-park aristocrats" - they were obsessed with image, status and money, but no matter how much they had of it, a few drinks deep or in private situations, the N-bombs would start flying, and not in a humorous sense - just hateful rants. They ran almost exclusively with white friends, and the few black guys I saw with them got mocked behind their backs and often subtly to their face for the amusement of the white guys. And the women were at least as bad as the men - petty and mean-spirited.

There were exceptions to both rules of course, but overall the rural residents were much nicer people and much less biased...and they had a pleasant tendency to wait for a lull in the party and suddenly break out a jar of cinnamon-stick moonshine.

/Mmmm...moonshine...

What policy issue affects white male southerners so much more than other population groups that would cause McCain to poll abnormally high in this area?
