My father in law was sending me "Obama is a Muslim" type emails all through the primary season...so I've been sending him this week'd daily show clips. Hope he enjoys them.

Blah. I really wish people would stop thinking McCain ever was a "maverick." He spoke a good game (sometimes) and even voted against his own party (sometimes), but his voting record still revealed him to be a pretty hard right-winger. All he was every really good at was apologizing, later.

Con_Authority [TotalFark] 2008-09-06 08:35:28 AM
I find it truly amazing how the Republican party has performed a massive flip flop the size of the solar system and the media isn't mentioning it.

In 2004 they accused McCain of every thing imaginable. They accused him of being a communist plant (Manchurian Candidate), they accused him of helping the communist Vietnamese make 32 propaganda films, they had ex-POW's publicly state that his knick name was "Songbird" because he told the Vietnamese everything they wanted to know. They claimed that his injuries were not the result of torture but the result of his failure to eject from his plane as he was trained (it was his fault), they accused him of having a black love child. It just went on and on.

In 2006? He's an American hero.

There must be Republicans laughing their asses off at how short the American memory is. First he's anti-American scum, now he's their top candidate. WTF?

FTFY

Rush limbaugh used to do this when Democrats were doing the self-contradicting. It's been years since I've listened to Rush for more than five minutes at a time, but I think he and his staff have gotten lazy and they don't do it either.

The major news organizations should have a staff that does nothing but juxtapose "what they were saying" versus "what they're saying now." I think it would lead a lot of Americans to realized that they're about selling product rather than expressing convictions.

almost as though they had no genuine principles and only cared about following the party line.

On an unrelated topic, are there archives of TF political discussions from say... 4 or so years ago ?

I heard that Obama was against NASA funding. He still is, but now he doesn't dislike NASA AS MUCH as before. FLIP-FLOPPER!!

They are protecting McCain, who is the exact opposite of McCain version 2000. You won't hear any of his blatant switches at all. And I bet that the same goes for Palin.

But if Obama states how he hated the color red years ago, and now he doesn't mind it so much, get ready for breaking news bulletins all over the news.

This is the single biggest reason I would rather vote for Obama over McCain.

The convention acceptance speech between Bush (2000) and McCain (2008) was just freaking scary. If it were possible, Obama should ask Jon Stewart if they could use that in a commercial.

"John McCain would like you to forget the past 8 years. Although he votes with Bush 90% of the time, he wants you to think that he is going to be different. Is that really the case?"

*plays TDS comparison of speeches*

"Do you really want that type of change? Can you afford 4 more years of that?

I am Barack Obama and I approve this message"

Anti-American scum is the definition of what Republicans look for in a presidential candidate. What? You mean you didn't know? How's that god-damned peice of paper that used to be the constitution holding up under the golden boy?

Generally they nail whoever is in power and ridiculous enough to deserve to be nailed. No doubt Jon Stewart and most of his writers are NOT Republicans (then again, few people want to be associated with that kind of failure), but their bias does not get in the way of good humor.

Since damn near everyone in the GOP has been criticizing Obama for being "arrogant", "elitist" and having a "messiah complex".

It's a fairly common talking point amongst the right.

Funny how the Daily Show is a "left show," when it never hesitates in deservedly mocking the Democrats. Also funny that, like every DailyKOS, Crooks & Liars, or Media Matters link, they go straight for the political affiliation without ever attempting to address the farkING VIDEO EVIDENCE.

I'll take that.

So, its OK that they fawn over Palin? Seems like they support her just as much as people support Obama. Is she the next messiah?

Dr.Zom 2008-09-06 11:04:24 AM
The major media will never give up on calling McCain a maverick. I saw Andrea Mitchell get told that Sarah Palin was forced on McCain by the Religious Right and then turn to the camera and call him a maverick thirty seconds later.

It's their narrative and it's all they got.

Hardly. Why, just look at her! She's like the girl next door mixed with Ron White with just a hint of Bush.

Why if I didn't know better I'd say she was the second coming of-

I mean, a well respected and qualified candidate for the vice-presidency.

It's accurate enough.

McCain has shifted his stance in a lot of ways that really challenges his position as a Mavrick.

Link (new window)
"I didn't decide to run for president to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be president because it had become my ambition to be president. . . . In truth, I'd had the ambition for a long time." ~McCain

I really would prefer he'd clarify on this. I don't want someone for President simply because they 'want' to be president. It comes off like he wants it like someone wants a trophy, winning for the sake of winning.

I'd really like McCain to show what he'd change, what he'd do differently, and if he's really NOT going with to change, show me what you'd like to continue and take on as your own from the predecessor. Just acting the mimic to Obama's change theme needs a lil more behind it. I may not like all of Obama's goals, but I prefer that to the disingenuous position of McCain calling for change when the Republican Party is pretty much the reason for that call in the first place.

But that's just it. This is his reward for serving his country for most of his life.

He doesn't even want to be a two-term president and he probably knows that he might not make it 8 years.

His time was 2000. He should've been president with his stances in 2000. But, after getting run over by Rove, he abandoned his positions to toe the GOP line because he knew this was his last shot.

He just wants to be president for 4 years just because he wants to be president.
