This is actually good for us. This was a big fark you to all the insurgents from the good people of Pakistan. As long as he can keep up the appearance of being somewhat at odds with the Americans, he will be able to take the fight to the Taliban, and we will be able to get Osama.

Don't worry. Obama will just tell them to stop it, and then ALL WILL BE WELL.

IF nothing else, he can deflect nukes with his jutting chin.

What is with suicide bombings. I wonder if they wonder why their countries suck so much. I mean when people leave all kind of crappy countries they still call them home and want to return. When people leave the middle east they will do anything not to go back. Does that say something. We should carpet bomb them and save them some time.

He was diagnosed with dimentia and other psych problems last year. Over 60 million bucks in a Swiss account. This guy sounds awesome. Mr.10 Percent!!! Why can't we get politicians this cool. It'd be one awesome debate that's for sure.

TFA: In a corruption case brought against him by the Pakistani government, Zardari's own lawyers told a London court last year that he recently suffered from dementia and other psychological problems....

Friends, family and party members insist, however, that he's healthy now and fit to rule.

Oh, THIS should end well.

I mean, the first move when this guy's party won the election was - guess what? - ending the funding of the National Accountability Bureau aka the main anti-corruption force of Pakistan.

I think that you misinterpreted what I meant. I do not think that Pakistan needs a "puppet", and though this guy looks somewhat corrupt I don't think that he will be considered an American puppet leader. I do think that it is a good thing for Pakistan to have a pro American leader to the extent that they are actively fighting the Taliban and allowing US military support in the areas bordering Pakistan. But they need to be somewhat at odds with the Americans to keep the people happy who dislike America but HATE the Taliban even more.

I know that this is a complex issue and one that affects your everyday life, so obviously you have a better understanding of the situation. But I feel like while the decision could be alot better it could also be alot worse. It is definitely to Pakistan's advantage to stay on our good side.

He is better than Musharraf who was incapable of controlling the fundamentalists he put in power during his original coup.

I'm not one of the whackjobs who thinks that Bhutto wasn't corrupt, but she was a significantly better option than Musharraf. If only the Vice-President's office had told Musharraf that her security was a critical issue. But, the VPs office doesn't always work well with the State Department, at least in this administration.

Benazir wasn't as bad. Her husband was the worst ever I've seen. Nawaz Sharif is no better. We keep getting crappy candidates to elect. No one seems to be honest or sincere enough to understand how badly the average Pakistani is being screwed over. Inflation is touching close to 20% on daily goods. Living here basically requires a massive bank account with lots of contacts. We're not a nation, it's just a bunch of people living in one place who hate each other savagely.

Musharraf was corrupt, however, it doesn't really matter who you change on the top level. Everyone in the middle and lower levels has learnt the ways of remaining corrupt regardless of whoever is in power.

\Not happy with result.
\\Country's running around like a headless chicken.
\\\Has bad feeling about this.

The only thing that really matters is whether or not the newly elected administration will allow the US to arrest Bin Laden in time for McCain to ride on that event's coat tails and steal the American presidency.

I am not a fan of the new President, but he's far from the worst person in Pakistan. From what I've seen, he wouldn't even make the top 10. He just gets press.

Military Dictatorship to Kleptocracy.

Seriously, why don't they just choose the Pakistan presidency at random. Or like in Italy (because of it's fascist past), make the presidency position so weak that the president can be easily changed without violence.

The scary thing is, the terrorists may have just won. Nardari would never have been considered for the presidency if not for the Benazir assassination. Give the klepto a couple years in office and the people may just be sick enough of corrupt secular leaders that they sweep the Islamists into power.

fta: A military statement said residents of the town of Tehsil Matta, some 100 miles north of Peshawar, decided to fight back against militants operating in the area. They launched an attack Friday night to prevent a suspected plan to snatch a village elder accused of supporting the government.

Who needs a president when the citizens are so fed up they're taking things into their own hands? That one paragraph is the best piece of news I've heard from Pakistan since... well, maybe ever.
