Wrong. First EP (XXX Records) version.

Nope. Otherwise, I would've submitted it instead. This is the only live version of it that I like, I might add.

*Sigh* Takes me back to my college days.

Saw 'em live back in their heyday. Awesome show.

Local rock radio has played this song so many damn times that it's really worn off for me.

It's one you never hear on radio here. They do play "Been Caught Stealin'" like there's no tomorrow, though.

That was during their '97 "Relapse" tour. Saw their performance in Atlanta that tour. It was a fantastic show.

I like that song.

I like Jane's Addiction quite a bit too.

That clip didn't seem so special to me either.
Version on the first record is best I think.

They appear to be way overacting or something.
They seem so hackneyed and pretentious there.

Make no mistake,in 1987 they were pretty damn exciting and original.

zappawizard 2008-09-05 09:07:57 PM
that version sucks, XXX version was best!

The Dynamite Monkey 2008-09-05 09:08:59 PM
Sorry subby, Perry's wicked flat and the doubled up acoustic guitar riffs on the studio version are missing here.

Good, but not the best.

that was from the late 90's reunion tour that Eric A. declined to be a part of.

Hillel had been dead for years when that was filmed

I love Jane's Addiction, but i HATE that song. HATE IT.

It's 5 minutes of two chords. TWO! G and A. That's it.

I was at that Atlanta show, not as quite as good as the 88 Metroplex show, 91 Center Stage show or Lollapolooza. but then again I missed most of that International Ballroom show because I got punched in the face and had to go to the hospital to get stitches. Lots of fun!!!

the Kettle Whistle version is from 1991. That video is from 1997.

Come on! I actually dig it!

Argoran: That was during their '97 "Relapse" tour.

That was also the time when Dave Navarro was in RHCP, so he and Flea were "crossing over"/guesting on this.

Wicked cool.

I liked this song until the alterna-stations killed it for me slowly and steadily everyday for the last umpteen years...still an ok song but as always, the popular song isn't anything close to a band's best.

Jebdiahbob 2008-09-05 11:41:32 PM
Okay that makes some sense. I had kind of blocked out the Navarro in RHCP.

No Eric A, no Jane's Addiction.

Know Eric A, know Jane's Addiction.

Yes indeed, here be screen cap, 'tis Flea, in all his awesomeness. Dave Navarro was in the band for a minute too, they recorded another (live) version of Jane Says when he was in the band too, I'm so glad that Perry admits that he'll never get a lineup that good again, and won't try to reform and tour/record again, guy has great talent, but some people equate them (JA and PFP) to Rush, if it weren't for the damn lead singer...

seabass242 2008-09-06 12:31:22 AM
Dave Navarro's ridiculous solos almost killed that band.

That being said, Nothing Shocking and Ritual still stand the test of time. The song "Of Course" on Ritual is one of my all-time favorite songs. Everyone can relate to the older brother making you hit yourself.

xdedd 2008-09-06 12:53:44 AM
Why does Perry always have to sing with so much delay/reverb? It's ridiculous.

I think I rarely ever listen to the first album outside of Trip Away and Whores.

I sit here after many beers.....and I watch this POS....This band sucks...this song sucks...Perry, Parry, whatever, is an attention whore with a shiatty band behind him...grow a set and listen to absolutely anything else other than this crap band....

Subby, so you got a greenlight, stop monitoring the thread....this band sucks...get over it...

xdedd: Why does Perry always have to sing with so much delay/reverb? It's ridiculous.

Because he sucks, but not as much as Anthony Kiedis (trying to keep some perspective).

Saw them nearly twenty years ago; google for JA Anson Ford Theater. They were okay, kind of sonic pedestrian. Nothing really crazy or dangerous, just safe pre-Alt rock for the dorky LA-Weekly crowd and chowder-headed doper jocks.

Both RHCP and JA are the best examples of what I hate in LA bands. Technically great, but both fronted by tone-deaf singers.

/Also saw Porno for Pyros. Utter crap.
//Wish I would have seen NWA or GnR in 89.

I feel the same. At least a bridge would have been nice, but this song has the same chord complexity as Achy Breaky Heart. It is tedious. And I love Jane's Addiction too.

ahhh, man. gotta love jane's. i remember seeing them on the first lollapalooza tour. they played "don't call me n*gger, whitey" by sly and the family stone with a guest vocal by ice T, all in the pouring summer rain. good times, good times.

OK, the musical complexity may be the same, but at least Jane Says has better lyrics and no Billy Ray.

craigdamage 2008-09-06 11:40:42 AM
No Eric A, no Jane's Addiction.

I have always notice MANY Jane's Addictions songs begin with a bass vamp.
I think he was the profound force in that band.

Derwood 2008-09-06 11:43:42 AM
I'm annoyed that Jane Says and Been Caught Stealing are the two most "known" Jane's Addiction songs, when they are probably the two songs that least represent the sound of the band.

Not that this is exclusive to JA....most record companies sell albums on the back of the one song that doesn't fit

All songs must have multiple chords and complex arrangements to be enjoyable.

Drunk assholes that have nothing better to do than shiat in threads are hilarious.

But who had better hair: Perry Farrell in 1997 or Billy Ray Cyrus in 1991? I don't think there are any winners in that horse race, chief.

Calm down there, spanky. No one said that.

My complaint is that this song is a one-bar loop. It is incredibly boring, and not a good example at all of what JA is like.
