Thank you. I am sitting here in the hospital with my son, feeling pretty helpless about all of this. It is nice to know that there are people who care. Thank you so very much.

Hate to hear of this sort of thing. Can't help but donate.

I do have a question though: Why traveling to NY? Of the top Children's Hospitals in the country, none of them are in NY and many are within driving distance of AL. Have you looked into closer/lower-cost-for-the-same-treatment options?

lostinpa 2008-09-05 11:18:17 AM
What kind of treatment is this, specifically? Is it in clinical trials still, or is it being used in a larger population?

I'm very sorry this is happening to you and yours.

The hospital in NYC is Sloan-Kettering. They are have been doing a study with this treatment, and it has shown a lot of promise. But, they can not ship the treatment here. The docs here have been begging them to, but they want us up there.

The doctor at Sloan-Kettering specializes in this illness. He is about the only one that does, this is a very rare illness. We have called St. Jude, and other cancer hospitals. But they can not do anything. Sloan-Kettering is our only hope.

$5.00 on the way.
I'm sure you've activated whatever appeal process your insurance company may have.
Good luck.

Thank you. It is a clinical trial. My understanding is that it has been going on for a number of years. It has shown a lot of promise. But, because it is a clinical trial the insurance won't pay for it.

Thank you so very much.

And yes we have. We talked to them yesterday and they told us there were no exceptions, not even in life or death situations.

May I ask why type of cancer it is? I'm curious because of some new breakthroughs in gene therapy that are being tested a bit closer than New York.

My thoughts are with you and your family. Being in the broadcast business I have had the pleasure of traveling to the St. Jude Hospital for Children in Memphis. Have you looked at this option? They are a great organization.

Not to state the obvious, but that is the claims department's job.
Keep working your way up the executive chain, talk to your companies' insurance sales representative, hell, call your congressman.
I apologize if you've akready done all this, it's the last thing you should have to worry about right now. But you should ride their asses into the ground if necessary. Talk to the local press, etc, etc.
Again, best of luck.

We are still trying with them. But they seem firm in their no. We are planning on contacting our congressman and the media here to see if that helps. I hope it does.

You got something from Dave aka Mr. and Mrs. Tweak. We know what you're going through and wish i had something witty to say to make it better.

I'll give what I can when I can.

Sloan-Kettering is a good place. My girlfriend works at UCSF with people from there; you can have faith they'll do what they can.

And may everyone involved in denying your boy coverage burn in hell.

Done.

Good luck, buddy. I really feel for you. I would be devastated if my son was in the same situation.

I'll also be voting for Obama with the hope that no one in this country will be denied the medical treatment they need by virtue of a lack of financial resources.

Also, because this is Fark, I'd hit your wife like a screen door during Hurricane Gustav. ;)

Hey mods...how about letting this go green?

I think the circumstances warrant it. I think the larger Fark community would like to help out.

sorry I already donated to Joe8121.

j/k

Favorite Uncle is fighting colon cancer right now so I know what you are going through. Though with a son it would be much worse.

$5 dollars on the way.

/after donating I noticed we had the same last name.

You probably already know this, but supposedly Corporate Angel Network (pops) provides free transportation for cancer patients on corporate jets with empty seats.

A friend of mine had several very rare forms of cancer. Her insurance company would only pay for her to go to a hospital that would do nothing but watch her die.

She contacted MD Anderson Cancer Center. They recommended a good lawyer.

Within a few weeks, she was transferred to MD Anderson and her insurance company ate the whole bill, including the attorney fees.

She has now been cancer free for three years.

Just a thought.

I'd donate something, but all I have are good wishes. My wife and I are living off the good will of others ;)

I live about an hour from NYC so if/when you make it here, if there's anything I can do to help, EIP.

I was going to recommend this as well. MD Anderson seems to have developed a very strong advocacy program that is (apparently) very successful in negotiations with insurance companies.

wait a minute I just noticed your son has brain cancer. ( I just read "cancer" the first time through)
I guess my uncles colon cancer doesn't correlate. But then again we all think thats where his brain is anyway...

Hope you reach your goal man.
