Is it a federal law? No? Ok then, dead issue.

And in Iran, Palin would be stoned to death for her numerous violations of Islamic law. But this isn't Iran.

Yeah, and if he were the king of whatever the hell country it was, he'd have thousands of topless teens vying to be his 984th wife. And if he were an astronaut, he'd be in space. And if he were a professional baseball player, he'd be making MILLIONS.

Did you even bother to read the article? Obviously no. The writer makes a very good argument that the current hodgepodge of sex offender laws are ridiculous and harmful. If Palins Daughter was in Arizona the boyfriend could be convicted of a FELONY, and have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, no matter where he lived.

All good and well, but that is a lot of "ifs" there. That is the problem, plus subby is just looking for a forced flamewar. Not to mention the admins feel the same way I suppose.

FTFA "America's sex laws are out-of-touch with reality and while they might be inspired by a desire to "help" people they are too often counterproductive and/or destructive. When laws create more harm than the they are able to mitigate then common sense alone tells you to repeal them."

So what part of that statement do you find moronic?

I'll try to say this again, but in small words so you may understand- The article had nothing to do with Palin, it was talking about the insane sex offender laws we currently have on the books in some states. You can understand that much, right?

That or a rational discussion on the implications of having such a disjointed system. Or a discussion about the implications of a federal level sex-offender registry which recognizes convictions, not crimes, when said convictions are based on state-level laws. Or a discussion about whether or not 18 year olds farking their 17 year old girlfriends SHOULD be a felony, given that many states say yes. Oh but hey this is fark.

In McCain's OWN STATE, as well as many others in the union, what happened is legally not a private matter. This means there's a certain hypocrisy to asking for privacy and it's important to analyze that in a presidential candidate.

And since I don't give a rats ass what most of you think, I am subby so there's a certain irony to agreeing with me but bashing the submitter. Do you get it was a headline? As in, a brief, semi-insightful intro to the article? I know a lot of farkers don't RTFA but you've drawn wild conclusions based solely on a headline. Read the article, the comment on its content, opinions, conclusions, implications, etc. And I didn't make the Palin connection either, the author of the article did. I just felt it was valid.

I think its more about hypocrisy than anything else. Sarah Palin is *exactly* the type of person who would support this sort of harsh sex offender law.

Wow what? What is the archetype of folks who support really harsh sex offender laws? Really religious, conservative, middle aged women with kids.

If Palin doesn't support these laws, then that's great. Somehow I doubt it.

She's the Governor of Alaska. I'm sure she could have rammed some legislation through if she had wanted. My guess is Alaska isn't ruled by Southern Baptist.

I never said she was crazy about it. My point wasn't even entirely about Palin, though I may have made it seem that way. The point is the GOP base which is totally willing to not care about this issue when we all know if this was Obama's 17 year old black daughter the situation would hardly be the same.

Oh, and she's been Governor for less than 2 years - that's not much time, and I wouldn't expect her to try to push everything she believes in.

Oh, come on, we can do better than that.

In 1860 Obama wouldn't have been allowed to vote, much less run for President...neither could Palin. But McCain voted to change that with his early proposals in his freshman term in Congress as the representative from the Gadsden Purchase.

In Florida the boy is also a sex felon unless he could prove that the girl wasn't "chaste" before they had sex.

This is interesting. So, the first guy who has sex with an underage girl in Florida is breaking the law, but then for any other guys after that, it's fair game?

WTF? Am I missing something in that explanation?

I'm sure she could have upped the sex offender laws in AK, but she was too busy raking in money from the bridge to nowhere funding she was for, before she was against. And getting the state commissioner fired over her sister's divorce. And there was still all those books she had to have banned at the local library. Give her time. Between that and field dressing a moose there's only so much one woman can do in a day.

Here in Colorado, I sometimes ride my motorcycle with no helmet.

In Oklahoma and something like a dozen other states, that's illegal.
(Here it's just stupid)

What's your point? How does it matter if what I do in Colorado isn't legal in Oklahoma?

While I agree with SOME sex offender laws, the ones in that article are ridiculous. I know in my home state if one of the people is over 18 & three years older than the other, then it becomes a crime. Otherwise, they leave 'em alone.

It was a pretty interesting article, describing the lack of consistency of sex laws and the implications of a national federal registry.

I found this part amusing:

In Texas the young man has committed a crime but has an affirmative defense provided he didn't use force at the time, wasn't more than three years older than the "victim", and if the "victim" was of the opposite sex. In other words, if the two young people were gay then the older one would be a 'sexual predator" but isn't a "predator" if the younger partner is of the opposite sex. (What did you expect? It's Texas.)

The same could be said about our firearm laws in the US. If I take either of my suppressors 1 mile east of where I live, I'm a felon. On the ND side, the cops say "cool, that's neat. How do you go about getting one of those?" on the MN side the cops would arrest me and put me in jail for 10 years.

The problem isn't the sex offender laws. (Though they are a big problem.) The problem is anal retentive and/or vindictive people who want to control other people using the law in their favor. When we leave this to the states, at least the damage is somewhat contained and is easier to change on the local level. When the federal government does it, we all suffer because someone from some other state decided to push this law onto everyone.

ND has legalized hemp farming and is activly trying to encourage it. (Dems and GOP) However the Federal DEA is still being an ass and not allowing farmers to plant. Once again, an issue that should have been left to the states is being mucked up by the feds.
