I am shocked, shocked to hear that Palin lied in her speech.

Sexist!

lexnaturalis 2008-09-05 08:30:49 AM
My power got cut off before I could finish her speech. Did she say she sold it on eBay, or that she put it up for sale on eBay?

Item not as advertised, arrived damaged. Could not contact seller. BEWARE.

She never said that she sold it on ebay. She just said she put it on ebay.

ExJerseyGirl: "That luxury jet was over the top. I put it on eBay."

So where's the lie? According to that article they put it on eBay and it didn't sell. So she told the truth; she did put it on eBay.

It's called "lie by omission or implication"

She said she put it on Ebay. The point was that it was an unnecessary expense.

Now the "bridge to nowhere" lie...

I disagree in this case.

As i wrote, IMO the implication was that it was an expense that the public shouldn't pay for. It WAS put on Ebay as part of the effort to sell it.

Don't get me wrong, I understand what you're saying. I just don't believe that the statement created a false implication.

I dislike Palin. I think she is unqualified. But "I put it on eBay" isn't a lie. She put it on eBay. Might not have sold, but she did list it.

The point is, she's showing an example of governmental excess she tried to eliminate in a manner that most people can relate to. That is, in a manner that would be considered "uncommon" for a governor.

That said, trying to sell your plane on eBay is stupid.

Locke3k 2008-09-05 09:36:48 AM
Yeah, clearly this is the type of political lies we need to be bothering ourselves with. *eyeroll*

At least stick to the Bridge to Nowhere lie, because that one has a lot more juice behind it. And unlike this eBay thing, it doesn't make all Democrats look like pedantic douchebags looking to do nothing more than score debate points when you call it a lie.

Lionel Mandrake: All she said was that she "put it on eBay" She didn't lie.

But she was damned-well intending for people to take it as sold it on eBay. She was technically not lying, but it was carefully crafted to mislead people because it sounded impressive on some level that she put the jet on eBay. People maybe shouldn't have assumed it sold, but if it didn't, why did she mention it?

Because she wanted people to think it did. Let's be real, here. She lies, or misleads, constantly. You know who else did that? [No, not him, Bush.]

Yes, a jet is the kind of excess we should get rid of. Firing your sisters ex husband, just because you can, is what real power is for.

Locke3k: Yeah, clearly this is the type of political lies we need to be bothering ourselves with. *eyeroll*

Okay... here's a good analogy. I knew someone who lied constantly. I was talking to my therapist about him the other day because he did some malicious things to me, and a lot of it was rooted in lies.

I said, "it's weird, the guy doesn't even know when he lies. He'll say things like "Oh, I had a tuna sandwich for lunch," but it will come out he had a hamburger. Or he'll say he saw a movie, but it turns out he hasn't. Here's what we agreed on: if someone lies about seemingly tiny, all the time, how on earth could they be trusted with big things?

Someone who lies about what they had for lunch will certainly lie about bigger things. I learned this personally, soon after starting to realize this so-called friend was a chronic liar.

If you catch this pattern, it's telling about a person.

Bwahahaha! If that is the worst you can muster she must be a pretty squeaky clean candidate. For anyone who heard 'put it on Ebay' and interpreted is as 'sold it on Ebay' they are too stupid to vote. Go imagine yourself up some more lies.

Locke3k 2008-09-05 10:32:46 AM
serpent_sky: If you catch this pattern, it's telling about a person.

The pattern I get from you is that you're surprised that a politician lies for a living.

I'd just rather we spend our time and energy focusing on, you know, the ACTUAL BLATANT LIES rather than trying to manufacture a lesser one into a lie, because it's entirely unnecessary to do so when you have an ACTUAL BLATANT LIE sitting right next to the one you're trying to manufacture.

Get it yet?

serpent_sky: If you catch this pattern, it's telling about a person.

I agree. Its why I won't vote for Bill Clinton....or John Kerry...or...hey, wait a minute? Politicians are liars! Someone should report on this right away. This is game changing news.

Just kidding. Lies can be a problem. But they can be a problem both ways. No one cares that she said she listed the plane (she did) and didn't say that it didn't sell. They might care if she had said, she sold it on eBay. Or that he never had sex with that woman. Or that Iraq = 9/11. Some "lies" or accusations of lies backfire.

Besides...

I can't believe I'm actually finding myself agree with you about something.

Way to go, serpent_sky, you've proven my point quite well. It's easier for people like Satan_Sunburn to paint all Democrats as pedantic douchebags when the most vocal Democrats act like pedantic douchebags.

It serves little other purpose to try to manufacture some sort of controversy out of nearly nothing when there's already a gigantic lie with built-in controversy (Bridge to Nowhere) that nearly all Americans can get behind.

In fairness, I'm not a Democrat. I'm just far less of a Republican. You're right -- it's not a big deal, really. But for someone's first speech to be full of misleading lines, as well as blatant lies, one has to wonder....

It serves little other purpose to try to manufacture some sort of controversy out of nearly nothing when there's already a gigantic lie with built-in controversy (Bridge to Nowhere) that nearly all Americans can get behind.
I agree. I'd rather see more focus on the bridge, as well. And where that money she did take actually went -- what did she do with it, where did she spend it, and what did it do for her state?

serpent_sky: And where that money she did take actually went -- what did she do with it, where did she spend it, and what did it do for her state?

Exactly what we should all be focusing on. You don't get to say you said "no thanks" if you kept the farking money.

Has it ever been explained where the money went/was spent? I've heard "she kept it" many times, but never "kept it and funneled it towards ________." I don't think it matters either way -- she could have funded the greatest thing ever with it but it still wasn't what the money was intended for, and to boot, she's saying she said "no thanks."

Where did that money go?

[Thanks for knocking some sense into me in terms of focusing on something that's far more interesting/possibly scandalous.]

Locke3k 2008-09-05 11:17:57 AM
serpent_sky: Has it ever been explained where the money went/was spent?

Link (^)

Congress' requirement that funds be spent on that bridge (aka the 'earmark') were removed before Sarah Palin became governor. She was therefore in no position to tell Congress anything about the bridge, one way or the other. During her campaign, she said she supported funding for the bridge.

Later, she accepted the money -- now not restricted by an earmark -- and used it for other infrastructure projects.

Seems to me like if someone is truly against earmarks, they shouldn't pander to their state by saying they're for the proposed earmark, and then they should return the money provided by earmarks they've received.

In addition, for someone who's supposed to be opposed to pork projects, she has done an awful lot to make sure her hometown gets federal pork projects. She herself has hired federal lobbyists to go to Washington and lobby for Wasilla to get federal funding. Which they did. Roughly $27 million in funding. For a town of 6,700 people. Link (^)

She did put it on eBay. She just couldn't move it. They had to eventually give it over to a contractor to move it. Pretty much like everyone else who wants to sell a plane like this has to.

It was a nice idea, but it sort of just wasted time and space while they figured out that selling jets ain't like dusting crops...

No it's called, "you're grasping at straws". She put it on Ebay, it didn't sell, so this article says that they then tried another method to get it sold. I'm supposed to have a problem with this? Somehow this is dishonest? Puh-leeze...
