This. If I made "music" that deeply shiatty, I'd wear masks so nobody knew who I was, too.

Cool? You have a different definition of "cool" than most people over the age of 14, teenagerwithshiattytasteinmusicmitter.

Slipknot aside, I'm kind of amazed that anyone can get the buying public to run out and pick up a quarter of a million CDs.

My Protools teacher mixed a Slipknot album, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

They've got such unusual and elaborate instrumentation, it's too bad that they've stuck with the teen angst schtick well into their thirties.

phedex 2008-09-03 07:41:13 PM
long time slipknot fan... the album is drastically below expectations. given it 5 straight through listens, and don't know if i'm interested in giving it any more shots. somethings just not right with this album compared to the last album, which appears so far to be their magnum opus.

Efferus X 2008-09-03 07:48:45 PM
I disagree with all of you naysayers. I can thoroughly say I appreciate this album. Granted, it's not the equivalent of their last effort in mainstream-ability (Is that even a word!?), but when should any artist be appreciated on the sole basis of their past releases? If anything the band has grown and evolved as a whole. I can relate to the sound and feel of this album as much as the last few, and unlike so many other bands of that era today, Slipknot has still maintained to retain their core sense of energy and aggression.

Although there will no doubt be those who disagree otherwise, I believe the #1 is well deserved.

These guys (as well as Tool, Disturbed etc) always get to #1 on their first week, then drop right out of the chart the next. They've got no staying power - just a bunch of fanboys who pick it up on the first day. At least, that's how it works here.

Huge metal snob. Hate Slipknot. They're new album is on of the best full metal albums I've heard in a long time outside of France, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, or Brazil.

Aren't units sold essentially a representation of how many people out there support the band anyhow?

I realize the rest comes down to opinion, but I'm sure the band itself, on some level, appreciates the sales and I personally don't feel ripped off with the product I was sold.

Staind's new cd on the other hand...

Not a big fan, but the few songs I heard from the new album don't sound like Slipknot. Too singy.

ModernPrimitive01 2008-09-03 11:41:58 PM
As a long time Slipknot fan i'm happy they've retained the old energy they had on the first two albums (not counting Mate, Feed, Kill, Repeat). The last one, i think Rick Rubin mixed the Bejesus out of the last one which made it stand out as a different sound in their catalog. All you haters out there are missing out on one hell of a record.

/Slipknot is still one of a few bands i'll still buy the cd for, i want my sale to be counted toward their numbers

maybe if people actually listened to the music and lyrics other than judging a band by their look, they might actually get that. personally I think this is their best work. I think corey has found what works for him as far as his singing style and his lyrics in general. most people will never realize this because they are too caught up with the whole, "those dudes wear masks, they suck" crap.

This is easily one of the best albums ever released and It's been awhile since a slipknot release stuck out for me.

This is a completely new sound, I think people (even those with some history of Slipknot) should at least give this album a listen. This combined with the Stone Sour album Come(What)everMay, or however it is written out, make up a new force for Corey that is by far his best direction done yet.

I live in middle America and see shiat like this first hand. While this is somewhat of an exaggeration on my part to try to be funny, this is based in an element of truth. Hell, I have friends who like Slipknot, and I really don't think they're all that bad, just not my cup of tea.

Verfall 2008-09-04 12:29:32 AM
It's a Stone Sour album with extra drums. After 3 playthroughs I'm not all that impressed. Their last album took awhile to really like, so I'm not lost on this one, but this time I don't have a boring job to give me lots of time to listen to music. we'll see where it stands in a month I guess.

/saw Finntroll last night, neck still freaking hurts from headbanging like a madman

Trust me, after traveling all around the country Cincinnati is not middle america, try being in a cornfield working till late in the day then getting asked why you are stopping working there is still daylight left.

I dont think you are going to get obama, Im not pulling for mccain(I really dont like either one) but I just dont think obama is going to win.

^^^ cause of my farkID I may seem biased, but I like this album. At first I was kind of OK with it, but after about a dozen or so listenings, it's really caught on with me. Thumbs up. I will, however, admit that after the last Stone Sour album, it's getter harder to distinguish SlipKnoT - especially in the last few songs on the album.

1) This is the pattern for most established rock bands. Rock labels go for mega hype and try for a big single before the release. If that doesn't work, they give up on the album. Besides, for rock bands most money is in touring as opposed to sales.

2) Tool really doesn't belong in that category. Not just because of the different sound, but the fact that they do not whore themselves out for sales. Slipknot, Disturbed, and a lot of other bands whore themselves out for 1-2 months before the album release. In the case of Tool, the first single had no music video and most of the press was magazine interviews as opposed to Fuse or MTV. Also with Tool you're not going to see corporate promotions with Hot Topic or Best Buy (Slipknot had a "listening party" at Hot Topic). Tool has a hard core following that generally buys 50-75% of the albums sales in the first 2-3 weeks.

I'll take it!
I'm in my mid thirties, a prog-metal and melodic death fan. But I still like the thrashy stuff. Critics have got to admit that they write really catchy riffs, the percussion is great and the lyrics are slightly better than the 13 year old notebook. I do wish they would give up the masks though.

I would rather like a band that everyone hates than some radiohead fanboy masturbationfest.

chaoslovescompany 2008-09-04 08:41:45 AM
I'm not a Slipknot fan but I like the new album. The thing that impressed me at first was the drums. I really like the first 2 songs. I don't really listen to the lyrics (except track 2) but his voice sounds pretty decent. I'm not going to turn into a huge fan because of it but I do like it.

Sorry, subby, but this is the second recount in Billboard history as Idolator pointed out. The first was the week of 9/11 when due to a recount, Toxicity by System of a Down beat out Songs in A Minor by Alicia Keys. As a fan of indie rock, I could care less about Slipknot, but as a chart watching nerd, i'm fascinated with this story. Slipknot's record sold something like 1,000 copies more than The Game. That's a tight race.

Not everyone wants to listen to old jazz or classical records. Some people like different music. Deal with it.

And yes, some people still appreciate "cd quality" audio and having a hard copy of an album. Most places you download music online (legally anyway) cap the quality at 256k or so. Hard drive takes a dump? Guess what...just rip it again. All is not lost. Not everyone backs up their stuff, that's just reality.

If you listen to 256k audio on anything but earbuds, it sounds like shiat. Period. you can't argue this and win, unless you're elderly and deaf or have a 1992 Fiero with a stock radio. Dynamic range takes a bit hit, and the overall impact of the music just sounds compressed.

When is there a regular rotation of music videos on MTV? I haven't even seen a music video on MTV since Nirvana was around.

THIS

I bought it. I listened. The jury's still out. I do like "Psychosocial", "All Hope Is Gone", "Gehenna" and "Gematria (The Killing Name)". Those songs to me remind me of the Slipknot days, maybe even a little of Iowa (with the exception of Gehenna) Alot of it is too much Stone Sour for me, but I can appreciate that in some of the songs it adds more than it takes away. I can tell you the bonus tracks (13-15) on the special edition pretty much suck balls. Especially the remix of Vermillion Pt.2...

/Doesn't regret buying it.

I'm sorry, when you so carefully craft a physical image like Slipknot, not only will you be judged by it, you SHOULD be. It's a huge part of their schtick, how they appeal to fans, and how they attract new ones. Gwar, Kiss, etc., have always, and will always be judged for their look first, and their music second. And they've done it that way on purpose.

Oh, and by the way, when did music become a competition? X band(performer) is better than Y band(performer) based upon Z criteria? Right.

Doesn't need a "suck" tag, it needs a "sad" tag. Cause' when the band stresses a "look" more than sound, you know your listening to kitsch. That said, I'm no hater, cause their kitsch sucks whatever disposable income straight out of the trailers.

Yep. If you don't want to be judged by your looks, start by not crafting a look.
