(AP) Sappy Letterman talks about Warren Zevon's last appearance: "He puts the guitar into the case and he flips the snaps on the case and says, 'Here, I want you to have this, take good care of it.' And I just started sobbing"   (hosted.ap.org) divider line 115

I've had Genius in the cd players for about 10 days now. I never get tired of it.

/Why is this under the sports tab?

shiat. Oops, not under any tab yet...

I blame the Firefox.

He could have redeemed himself, by at least including a riff from Play it All Night Long.

Youtube has that final appearance on Letterman in it's entirety. If I remember correctly it is a 4 part video.

/Genius is an incredible CD.

i'm not a big Zevon guy, but i did make in "appointment tv" to watch that appearance. he and dave had a genuine friendship and you could tell that there was a lot of appreciation and admiration there. i'll have to look that up on youtube.

neat story about the guitar.

OK, So exactly the same article as earlier.. but headline focuses on last paragraph..

And link was to real story, not "print" version.

/Zevon and Letterman are both class acts. Didn't know they had that kind of friendship. Good on them.

Loneliness and frustration
We both came down with an acute case
And when the lights came up at two
I caught a glimpse of you
And your face looked like something
Death brought with him in his suitcase

I posted this in the other thread -

Read the book by his wife. It was written at Warren's request, and included a LOT of his own journals, as well as comments by some of the biggest names in music, who also happened to be some of his best friends.

When I hear the term "troubled genius", there is only one person who comes to mind, after reading that book.

I'm sure I'll get a "no shiat Sherlock" from somebody, but Letterman and Zevon were actually friends for many many years. Dave even did some background vocals on one song (The Hockey Song) in the early 80's I believe

I'll be honest here, and I'm not looking for a flamewar either, but I've never heard of Warren Zevon until this thread. I looked up his last performance on Letterman, and watched the video, and I just absolutely did NOT like the song at all. I thought it was just horrible and found it difficult to sit through.

Having said that, I'd like to be fair, so I'm sure someone can suggest something else of his I might like, or an easier introduction to his music? I'm willing to give it a fair shot.

You might try "Werewolves of London," probably his most recognizable song. AwwWOOOOOOOO!

Warren Zevon had 1 decent moment in American culture, and he owes most of it to Mr. Tom Cruise.

What a coinky-dink. They're mine too [on most days. He wrote so many great lyrics, that it's impossible to claim only one singular set of them].

If EVER there was a songwriter who could have [should have?] been a kick ass novelist [or journalist or screenwriter or playwright], it was Warren.

This rarefied air I exist in allows me to miss stupid shiiittte like that until somebody points it out or I'm exposed to it years afterwards. As of this posting, I've never heard of it. And I'll put it waaaaaaayyyyyy down the list of my life's priorities to seek it out to hear it.

Had the pleasure of seeing Zevon twice in my life. Both times in a Louisville club called The Phoenix Hill Tavern. He was and will always be one of the great songwriters of my time.

I tried introducing an ex to Zevon with that song and "Excitable Boy." She thought the lyrics were kind of interesting but that the music just didn't go anywhere and she wouldn't listen to anything else. I probably should have started with "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" (was that the Letterman performance you saw, therealburkazoid, or was it one of the other two songs?) or maybe something off of Sentimental Hygiene.

Actually, I really like the performance of "Genius" from that final Letterman appearance (new window). Assuming that wasn't the song that turned you off, of course.
