Nah. They played at the Target Center in Mpls. It's a good 20-25 minutes away from the Excel Center in St Paul.

That's exactly what they'd say. They aren't trying to be like "we can do this even though you can't." They're trying to get us to realize that everyone should be able to do it if they want to. No one's getting hurt by music, and as long as no one's getting hurt, there shouldn't be any reason to regulate. I understand it's about permits, but shouldn't 4,000+ people standing in a public area shouting, "let them play" be enough of a permit?

Just my opinion I guess.

Yep, an excellent protest, good mood, no harm to anyone, people expressing their rights and wishes. The very foundation on which your country is based.

Also, some farker commented on starting 3-syllable chants in a thread a few days ago - the spontaneous "Let Them Play!" is pretty damn cool in this situation.

Yes, this is clearly ironic, as Rage Against The Machine is known for their fascist and capitalistic leanings.

Would you say the same thing if it were the KKK rolling up into some the middle of some ghetto randomly with 4,000+ people screaming "let them stay"?

It is an honest question, I am not trying to be an asshole.

Pocket Ninja: I'm not a huge fan of Rage Against the Machine, but that was pretty cool.

It always amazes me that as diametrically opposed as I am to their politics, I actually kind of like their music. And the cynic in me thinks that they orchestrated the whole thing just to provide the spectacle.

You fail to see the difference. If it were the KKK rolling up into a ghetto and proclaiming white power and hate speech directed at the inhabitants of said ghetto, then that would be seen as threatening violence and therefore potentially harmful. This is a group of people who are sick of watching the system be mismanaged and misguided who realize that RATM may not have the answer that's necessary to turn it all around, but at least they're a media figure that is sick of the same stuff. They aren't preaching hate toward any group of people, they're aiming their anger at coming together and trying to show that we deserve to keep the freedoms that were laid out for us at the start of this country. If the guys who started this country were KKK members and our country was based around literal hatred against people of another color or ancestry and they built the country on that hatred, I still wouldn't agree to 4000+ people chanting for a lynching, but I wouldn't be able to justify my position through anything other than reason.

Jags. Know someone's views before you rip on them. What the hell do you people do to try and spread positive messages to the masses? and with what mediums do you get them across to said masses? Just curious. I'm waiting...

I don't think you realize that they're not raggin on Rage in they're quotes. Just the "fans" that seem to only get their political insight from entertainers. Everyonyone's allowed to have and share their political views, but just because you have the ability to express it to the masses doesn't make them more right than others.

I actually do know RATMs views. Used to be a big fan, read Chomsky and Stalin and Lenin (not to put Chomsky on the level of those 2, just first 3 that came to my mind) and others that they "recommended".

Bought first few CDs. Went to a concert.

Still like their music, but not their politics.

As far as reaching the masses. I honestly think that reaching individuals is more important and productive. Especially if those individuals then in turn reach other individuals. In that respect, I've done volunteer work at an inner city after school programs I've done volunteer counseling (obviously not like a psychologist) and other similar activities.

I'm just not a big "Ends justifies the means" kind of guy. Obviously they are.

I agree with you, but at the same time give them a lot of credit for planting the seeds of political activism and awareness in young people who may not have otherwise had it. In this case, I think the message is more important than the messenger.
