Ah, welcome to sunny beautiful Zimbabwe, where "racial justice" is a way of life and not just a slogan, where everyone lives in harmony with nature, and people care so little about money you could throw $1 million in the street and no one would bother to pick it up.

Now our "good friends" Al Gore and Barack Hussein want to make America more like Zimbabwe.

I can hardly wait. . . . .

But the doctors said that if there was a plane crash or similar disaster, victims who might otherwise be saved by prompt and well-equipped care would likely end up as "dead meat."

To be fair, every dollar spent on prevention usually saves around one thousand in tax-payer funded healthcare. It's good policy to look after people's health before they get sick or hurt.

No they can't stop banging one another.

First, it is not in their nature to think ahead; when they get the urge, they act on it.

Second, it results in pregnancy which is exactly what they want. A man figures if he has eight kids, he can put them out to work and they will feed him, and if they have eight each, that will be sixty-four grandchildren to take care of him when he is old.

Third, it is about the only form of recreation which is free.

Every time we have a healthcare thread, some yahoo takes his lips off the collective right-wing schwanz to opine that getting sick is some sort of character defect.

Uh, fantasy book? Not sure what you're talking about. Out of curiosity though, where do you get the idea that it's not good policy to prevent disease instead of treating it?

Just a guess, but I'm thinking Sean Hannity and Billy O'Really.

I came here to post a knee-jerk reaction to a knee-jerk reaction based on Subby only reading the headline, which specifically misses the point, and is designed to provoke said knee-jerk reaction.

THIS IS HOW THEY'RE MAKING YOU STUPID.

Now, someone's going to say the key point to Zimbabwe's problem lies in this sentence from the article: Health authorities blame the drying up of foreign aid under Western sanctions .... The assumption is, *yawn* yet again, the government is responsible for health care, and we shouldn't be playing with Zimbabwean lives by denying them the funding which can save their lives. So, they'll say, we should end the sanctions.

This is a dual evasion.

First, lifting the sanctions and reinstating the flow of foreign aid puts any nation who supplies that aid firmly on Mugabe's side. Material support is moral support, and as long as Mugabe is in power, he'll continue his bloody, racist reign.

Secondly, it's not a legitimate function of any government to provide health care for people. In fact, it can't - all any government can do is use its power to manipulate the industries and providers of health care into doing so according to the state's rules, and at taxpayer cost.

The solution lies with the Zimbabweans themselves. Depose Mugabe, instate a government which protects individual rights, and lifts barriers to trade. Zimbabwe is a platinum-rich and gold-rich nation which could have tremendous economic power, in which a multitude of means could bring about a health care system that works.

As long as a government is in control of health care, especially one that is as brutal as Mugabe's, and particularly one that places itself as dependent on foreign aid et could produce tons of wealth, sick people and unstocked hospitals are unavoidable.

Health authorities blame the drying up of foreign aid under Western sanctions imposed to end political and human rights abuses under President Robert Mugabe

Didn't take the article long to blame it on us. By the way, didn't we send something like 12 billion dollars over there for health care or some damn thing?

spidermilk 2008-08-31 06:16:40 PM
This isn't really about prevention.. its just about how bad Zimbabwe is if you're not wealthy enough to leave the country if you get sick.

Its pretty sad that the hospitals don't even have gloves.. and apparently they don't have painkillers or antibiotics either. I'd say that any doctor or nurse who is working in a hospital like that which obviously has no money is pretty brave.

For America (and everyone else), not getting sick IS good advice.. (I know you can't stop everything, and being super paranoid is dumb.. but) I wish that in highschool/middle school health they'd teach you things like:
1. If you are this age, weight, sex, and don't exercise, you need this many calories
2. Antibiotics make birth control pills ineffective
3. The cartilage in your joints cannot repair itself if you damage it
4. There are more bacteria everywhere than you can imagine, antibacterial soap will not eliminate them from your life.

Just basic stuff other than 'oh, this is a fruit and this is a vegetable!', 'wash chicken before you eat it', 'drugs are bad!'

kind of hard when you are too sick and hungry to pick up a rifle/pitchfork/stick/rock and when bullets cost a few billion dollars a piece.
