I am very good at deciphering weird acronyms and text speech but I have no idea what the hell that says.

"if anything makes you feel sad or uncomfortable ??? tell a responsible porn-rated movie straight away. Don't be afraid until get in strife"

Pocket Ninja [TotalFark] 2008-08-31 06:17:34 PM
Yes, this seems pretty stupid.

No, I can't read the poster.

But the most important thing here is that I'd like to compliment the submitter for managing to submit a headline about England, from the Daily Mail, without using the completely uninteresting "nanny state" cliche.

"In anything makes you feel cross or uncomfortable online tell a responsible adult straight away, don't be afraid you'll get into trouble."

It's simple, really.

There is some really scary stuff in the dark corners of these intertubes stuff. I would be more concerned if the kids could not find something that makes them feel uncomfortable.

/Serious

zarkill 2008-08-31 07:13:31 PM
"how the hell do kids communicate like that?"

they don't, this was written by stupid adults who not only undermine proper english, but fail miserably at connecting with kids using "their own language"

Hoarf 2008-08-31 07:14:47 PM
kanyakumari: How does on9 == "online"?

I guess it's some sort of strange amalgamation of text speech and cockney rhyming slang.

Devoid Pumpkin 2008-08-31 07:15:13 PM
If I ever get a text that's written like that, I will reach through my phone and punch the typist in the mouth.

And I'm pretty sure (:+( is a sad emote.

One of the nine tips on the poster, which uses the letters XXX to denote an adult

Remember that article in the NY Times about "hip Gen X slang" wayy back in the day? Swingin' on the flippity flop? Suckin' my flava?

Yeah. That.

Gordon Bennett 2008-08-31 07:15:39 PM
But bosses at London Grid for Learning (LGfL), the local authority-funded organisation behind the posters, believe text language is the best way to get through to children today.

Gordon Bennett, of north London, having been a child once, believes that a much better way to get through would be to stop patronising them and to treat them as if they had some shred of intelligence, rather than these embarrassing and pathetic attempts at manipulation and deception.

Macphearsome 2008-08-31 07:16:20 PM
i hate it when individuals who don't use text-speak attempt to create documents using it.

it's always an embarrassing misrepresentation of the whole concept of abbreviation.

So THIS! Just like when i was growing up in the early 90s and everything educational tried to rap to be hip and just wound up being really patronising and offputting.

I don't know whether to laugh (because it's a lame attempt to "speak their language"), or cry (because they think kids are too stupid to read actual English)

Sean_L: So it's written in Cockney?

DING DING DING DING DING

though not "cockney" per se as that's actually a rhyming slang, just British youth slang. watch enough footballers give interviews and this talk becomes like a second language, innit?

xopher.tm 2008-08-31 08:00:22 PM
Could read the poster. Couldn't make heads nor tails of the headline.

What gets me is some of the words used on the poster. "Strife"? "Kin?" "Frets"? Are kids today using these words anywhere at all, on or offline? Can someone in the UK clue me in about usage of these words? KTHXBAi!1!

My generation makes me cry....

If the text-and-IM "speak" becomes professionally acceptable within my lifetime (which is sadly all too possible, as it is my generation that uses/worships it), I may just have to shoot myself. And be buried with my Complete Works of Shakespeare.

I won't presume to call myself grammatically perfect, as I am not an english professor, and I have spent far too much time on the net. I also tend to take liberties with run on sentences and commas in an attempt to convey my speech pattern. But honestly. It is NOT all that difficult to adhere to proper spelling, capitalization, and basic punctuation. Nor is it that hard (at least for me) to adhere to the stricter grammar rules when writing in a more formal arena.

Am I really the only 20 year old that respects the language EVEN when online or texting?

soupergenyus 2008-08-31 08:19:36 PM
If someone texted me like that I don't think I would ever talk to them again.

MadAzza [TotalFark] 2008-08-31 08:21:06 PM
A friend of mine the other night texted me with "Mo whr u." I texted back, "What? Are you drunk?"

Yes, yes he was. (He's 52; I'm 47.)

I can understand leaving our vowels and some unnecessary letters, but I usually text in full sentences. It's just too hard to turn off the editor. Every now and then I try using shorthand, but then I find myself grinding my teeth until I go back and write it out properly.

Seriously I text a lot and I have never even heard of an adult being referred to as XXX. And what is with the random capitals do you know how hard it is to switch between simple letters and capitals?

Never agree to meet an online pal in real life without checking with a responsible adult.

Responsible adults include your teachers, parents and the caretakers with whom you live. If you have any frets using ICT safety at home or in school, please speak to them.

Where to begin? The random capitalization of letters is a good place. Oh, but you say, they mean to pronounce the Letter as it is spoken when alone not as it would be as written in the word, i.e. R = are, F = if, U = you. A-ha, I reply, then please tell me why the Z is a capital in doZe? and why is UzN (Ewes-En) the preffered spelling instead of UZn (Ewe-Zeen)?
Also they don't always capitalize the F for if or the U for you, but they do for B = be?

It smells pretty fishy.
