"I can imagine this has warped her for life"

yup.

from some nerd blog:

If San Diego Comi-con is "nerd prom" then Dragoncon is "Geek Mardi Gras."

How is this not in the "Crime/Law" section?

slobarnuts 2008-08-31 12:01:56 PM
Gabby three-year-old Ella, in a Mulan costume, was fearless going right up to Cookie Monster and accepting a red sucker from Ryan Shile of Chicago, who was mock campaigning for president as Zod from "Superman 2." "Kneel For Change!" he proclaimed.

High probability of win.

Wow. That first family is pretty warped. She's 18 when she has her first kid with a 43 year old. And gives the children the typical stupid spellings of regular names.

I laugh when I think about all the awkward nerds hitting on other awkward nerds then going back to the hotel for awkward virgin nerd sex.

/then I think of what they look like and gag a little

pizza_crust 2008-08-31 12:19:22 PM
nah kids can handle that nonsense just fine, it's the adults that get warped

oryx 2008-08-31 12:21:08 PM
It's not so much kids going to DragonCon that has them warped, it's having parents that go to DragonCon that warps them.

Je5tEr 2008-08-31 12:22:57 PM
DragonCon? What's DragonCon? I have NEVER heard of that refered to by anything other than DrunkenCon.

That said, WTF is it with all the kids lately in places they usually weren't, like bars etc?

worlddan 2008-08-31 12:23:24 PM
My younger brother took his 12 year old daughter to a Magic card tournament and she was the only kid there. He got mad and left because they insisted on pairing the two together. He was like, "WTF, I can play her at home anytime." And they were like "pedophiles".

"Werner Stockman"...wow, his parents set him up at birth for a lifetime of nerdiness.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love nerds and geeks alike. But I think it's very inappropriate to bring kids under 10 to a comic con. I especially hate the people who have their infants in the huge Graco stroller-monstrosities that take up half an aisle.

The family in the article is very sad, in my opinion. I cringed when I read the part where the 10 year old wanted a Family Guy shirt and her mom was ok as long as it was a 2 for $35 deal. A 10 year old shouldn't be watching that show, let alone wearing the merchandise.

I've never been to DragonCon, but I've been to AWA a few times so I can imagne what is is like.

If the parents take them to the cons too much then they will *gasp* think Cosplay is normal!

n e 1 else find it creepy how the 5 yr old was drawn to R2D2 like a crack whore to a pimp?

I greatly enjoy attending gaming conventions. I know I don't fit in so much, but it's still wonderful people-watching. The only major downside to being around so many "unique" people is the smell. Every year, I always forget about the smell -- until I get there. *sigh*

I know what you mean. You would think that people could spare 15 minutes to take a shower. The worst ones is the teenagers that use the body sprays to "mask" their odor!

My definition of bad it the end of the second day in the DDR room. That or the stinch that can gather in the game rooms wit hall of the plasma TV's.

Hey Blink, that "smell" you're referring to is called "geek funk". It happens when large groups of this species gather together. It's like pheremones - so that other geeks can find the nest.

You can only click the link once, then it becomes a registration site. Nice.

As for Dragoncon, I'd much prefer it if they actually got some guests I wanted to see. But I guess as long as people pay to get in for the costume party they still make a profit, so there's no reason to make the effort and come up with any other reason to attend.

I especially love it when rabid fans of professional sports teams who paint their beer bellied bodies in tri-tone and don over-sized foam appendages deride sci-fi and comic nerds who like to play dress-up... *sigh*

sounds like the perfect con costume is the sandman, the one that wears a gas mask

or as one of the patients from the doctor who episodes the empty child, or rhe doctor dances

I'm a self-admitted geek who enjoys the occasional gaming con experience.

My friend and I refer to it as our yearly "self-esteem building weekend", since we always seem to be saying, "Well, I may be a major geek, but at least I'm not THAT guy!"

Which hotel is it at? Or am I just hopelessly out of touch? I'm bored out of my mind today, maybe I should go down and see what's up.

I am a very sad panda that I could not go this year. WTF is with the little kids? It's crowded, hot, crowded, fast-paced, crowded, kids don't usually have much a tolerance for that.

I'm glad I love Frolicon so much. NO KIDS, yay!

I can tell you from a female standpoint that is is nice to wear a "skimpy" costume to stay cool, but the unwanted attention sometimes make you wish that you had worn a full lenght jacket.

I've always wanted to have the time to make a Samus costume to wear to a fall or winter convention. But in the summer it would be way to hot to wear!

Actually, all jokes aside -- I finally found the secret to my having an enjoyable time at cons: I instituted a 'no sex when others (uninvolved with the sex) are in the room' rule for those of us sharing a hotel room. This may seem like common sense / common courtesy to some -- as it SHOULD -- but you'd be surprised at the stupid shenanigans I had to put up with BEFORE making that rule.

/Now I have a safe haven to which to retreat for peace, quiet and, yes, fresh air! ;)

But its about sports, so its acceptable.

/Over rabid sports fans scare me more.

I'd like to go to a fantasy or gaming convention. I went to AWA once and HATED it, but I hate a lot of anime. Mainly due to its fans. Plus the disturbing thing about anime conventions isn't the people uglier than you, it's the people way better looking than you and WAY more geeky. It's just disconcerting.

I really should hit up Indy Gencon sometime.

Ahh convention season, the panicked schedules, the overcrowded halls, and the overwhelming odor of "Con Funk". If you think it is bad as an attendee... try being a vendor stuck in the dealers hall for days on end. People do not seem to realize that these heavy costumes may look nifty but deodorant can only do so much. I honestly think my sinuses just curl up and die after the first day or so ;)

I don't know that I've noticed that many more "attractive" people at anime cons than at gaming cons. There are a lot more girls at anime cons though. But as far as guys at the cons there isn't that much of a difference that I can tell.

LOL, I've been the vendor's department head for 4 different conventions over the last 6 years or so. I understand exactly where you are coming from. It seems like some of them line up at the door for opening and never leave all day!
