(Washington Post) Dumbass If there were an Oscar for sermons, Seagears would be a contender. There's his "Dark Knight" performance, when he roared up to the pulpit astride a Suzuki motorcycle, dressed like Batman   (washingtonpost.com) divider line 31

"When I went into the church as the Joker, there was complete silence," Seagears recalled fondly. "People were stunned because I was acting as if I was evil."

I'm not sure what to say.

Just remember that The Dark Knight had the strange contradiction of The Joker praising massive chaos and spontaneity while being a meticulous planner. Batman was the agent of chaos in that movie.

I'd love to see the Batman sermon. Should be a trip. But the Joker was the preaching hypocrite in that movie.

So...American churches are more and more like the costumed religions of Africa and the Americas, with their shamans dressed as pantheistic powers and mythological icons.

If I knew more about Claude Levi-Strauss I'd be dry humping Seagear's ministry into a PhD in Anthro. Oh baby.

FTFA: "Last month he saw "Hellboy II: the Golden Army," in which an evil prince seeks to resurrect an indestructible army to take over the Earth by assembling pieces of a magical crown.

We, too, have invaluable crowns, Seagears preached, rewards God has prepared for those who love and serve him faithfully."

He went for the crown reference? I might have mentioned something about evil armies and world domination.

Well. I kinda know where he's coming from.

A Suzuki? He rode in on a girls bike? Was this a ghey church? Not that there's anything wrong with that, but if you want to make an impact, you need to ride in on a Hawg.

He is teaching life lessons by using the characters from movies? Don't see a problem with that. Beats the snoozfests that were droned into us when I was a kid.

I, for one, am surprised that a church would co-opt secular entertainment to preach to their sheep. What's next? Amateurish Christian versions of mainstream rock bands?

Yes, all the big boys straddle hogs. A lot of them also still wear Greek fisherman's hats and leather chaps. Oo! Macho menses!

I can't decide which is queenier ... the one who likes to "ride hawgs," or the one prancing about and swatting at things with a bit of newsprint.

CitizenTed: I, for one, am surprised that a church would co-opt secular entertainment to preach to their sheep. What's next? Amateurish Christian versions of mainstream rock bands?

When I was young, my grandmother was the most religious person I knew. She lived humbly, ate a diet dictated by her beliefs, prayed and sang devotional hymns. She did not go to secular entertaiments.

Because of her I have no respect for these new religious movements that say "Do whatever feels good, just as long as it mentions God or Jesus." These things are an obvious attempt to keep young people in the church at a time when the world is full of distractions from TV, music, video games, and the Internet.

Last week's sermon at the church for which I play began with a viewing of the "5, no, 3 questions" scene from Monty Python's The Holy Grail. No joke.

For a second there, I thought you meant 'No 3 The Larch', which would've been relatively obscure for a sermon
