(The New York Times) Spiffy Guy has been building his retirement medieval castle home by himself on weekends, brick by brick, for past twenty years, and is still only half-done. "Things look so much nicer with a castle"   (nytimes.com) divider line 65

Sorry. This guy (Link) beat him to it.

Yeah, there's been a couple guys like this over the years.

Speaking as a former member of the SCA, I am jealous.

I think he meant that castles are traditionally built of stone.

That's true, of course, but I doubt Joe Average has a quarry and the necessary equipment handy to do it himself; bricks are much easier to acquire and to use.

There's also the Bishop Castle outside Canon City, Colorado. I walked through that one a few months ago. That one is made out of stone.

I have tossed around the idea of building a castle for years, but then I remember that I have no idea how to do it...or any money. Perhaps someday!

Nobody expects to read references about huge tracts of land! Our chief weapon is fear and surprise. Our chief weapons are no fewer than fear, surprise and a fanatical devotion to stealing other peoples jokes in order to seem interesting and or funny!

Damn, that's just what I was thinking.

I think a castle would be the best defense against the zombie apocalypse: it's meant to withstand constant attack by unarmed thousands, the walls are high enough to prevent anyone (or anything) from climbing over them, and there's that nice big courtyard to grow your food in.

And those parapets? Add some 50 cal machine guns and you're solid gold, baby!

Yeah, but who can get .50 cals? For groups I'd recommend some kind of incendiary - the propane trick from Dawn of the Dead is god. For individuals, they run up to the wall and then just stand there moaning in their primitive zombie language, so you can pick them off with any old weapon. I'd recommend a very accurate rife so you save ammo - something like a mauser.

In some zombie movies, animals may become infected. If that's the case, you're screwed. But if animals aren't affected, a pack of german shepherds might actually be all the defense you need.

Back when I was growing up in the 1970's in my little home town of Eunice, Louisiana there was a house that looked like a castle. And it even had a moat.

But it looked like a normal house inside. it was just a facade in the front made of wood with one layer of big gray bricks.

It still looked cool.

Not far from it was one of those "futuristic" homes from the early 1960's It looked like a big chicken coop.

there are two for sale at my local gun shop, one is a browning I belive the other is an AR-50, which is creepy since the gun shop shows how ghetto it is by selling gold plated desert eagels as well. last I saw the brwoning was a few grand

Many 15th-16th century castles were made of brick. Such as Herstmonceux Castle (pictured here) or Avonberg Castle in Germany.

Castle Gwynn outside of Franklin, TN. The roof of the second tower has since been added. You can see it from SR 840, south of Nashville. A Renaissance festival is held there every year, and I met the owner of the castle there one year. He's a really nice guy and this was his lifelong dream.
/no, I didn't dress up for the festival

The fello who bult it died of CO poisoning from his generator.
The widow is selling it. It had a private air strip, too.

FTFA: Mr. Noz, a father of three, has been known to throw an occasional flaming arrow from the top of the castle into a fire pit as a celebratory gesture during birthday parties.

Bamburgh castle, just up the road from where I live. Fits into the home-made castle category because it's a Victorian fantasy castle, built by the industrialist Lord Armstrong in the last 19th century. Still a hella impressive thing though. It's huuuuge.

When I was a cub scout, living in the rural wastelands outside of Cincinnati, our den went to visit some crazy old guy who had been building a castle out of rough limestone for years.

I have no doubt that he is dead now. That was in the late 70s and he was already pretty old.

It wasn't the sort of castle I would have thought of as a kid, but after visiting Ireland, and seeing Blarney and others, I think he was doing a pretty good job.

Probably gone now. Can't find anything about it online.

If 19th century 'fantasy' castles fit into the category, let me present the mother of all home-made castles:

Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria, built 1869-1884.

You ever been out that way? There is a whole lot of nothing by Denair, the closest town. The central valley in California has miles and miles of crops, and then a little town here and there.
