Um, nice try dude but that map which shows no landmarks so you can't really tell what is Baton Rouge and what may be Livingston certainly doesn't show enough of a surge to put it underwater.

Oh God. This is just what we need. I live in BR. Went to the casino last night and it was more crowded than i have seen in a long time. they're also planning on staying open through the storm. This'll turn out well

Ha! Was just watching Tampa News weather on http://www.livenewscameras.com/map.html
At the end the screen goes blank but the sound continues to transmit. The guy goes 'And that's about it, wah. WAH. WAH!!!' and you hear people in the background laughing, then a woman asks him if they always go north (storms, I think she means)...

Let's see...some said that Katrina happened because God was displeased by the gay event planned to start in New Orleans the next day...what could possibly be planned there now that might displease Him? Only thing that is planned is, well...the Republican convention. Wanna bet this time those same folks will say it is "not the same thing"?

Bandman614 2008-08-31 09:15:11 AM
All Right! I just got cable because of football season, so I can watch it happen live on the tube.

Seriously, why do people still live in the bowl? Eminent Domain it all and turn it into a park. Keep the historic buildings, and raze the rest. The total value of all the land after this comes through has to be, what, $20?

You realize that crawfish and shrimp are two totally different animals, right? I don't know if he was referring to this, but sometimes crawdads live in the mud, and a storm can tear things up to make the hunting a little easier.

I'll say it again.... It won't matter if the levees hold or not, the surge will be over them.

It looks like there won't be much left of the bayou areas. This could wipe out what was left of the shrimp operations down there.

How about Ruidoso, the ski resort at 6700 feet elevation, flooding due to Tropical Storm Bertha a month ago? Seek higher ground rules out most mountains in North America.

"batten down, Baton Rouge..."

Limeyluv 2008-08-31 09:39:01 AM
Baton Rouge is north of that mapped zone. It's Ascension Parish, just south of us, that will go under (Gonzales, Sorrento, Darrow, Donaldsonville, St. Amant).

Baton Rouge is above sea-level, our levees are well-maintained, our pumping stations are modern and have backup, and we don't have canals cutting through neighbourhoods. Ascension has a lot of bayous to worry about.
All BR has to worry about is drowning in beer.
Geaux Tigers!!!!

It already jumped twenty cents up in SoDak. Not sure if it is Gustav fearmongering or just routine soaking the tourists for more cash.

I am expecting $6 a gallon gas up here if Gustav does a good amount of damage. We have people fighting to stop a Canadian pipeline and refinery up here. Without it we get ALL of our gas via the gulf and a refinery in OK. Idiots.

Yes, but Krotz Springs and the Atchafalaya plus the flood control structure could be at risk if Gustav hits a few miiles west of Morgan City. I don't know if Whiskey Bay area could take all the surge.

Scour holes and all that stuff don'tcha know.

Bayou Bonfouca, say it fast.

Shreveport here. We're going to be fine.

/Shreveport and Bossier are conjoined-twin cities separated by the Red River only

ksr315 2008-08-31 09:58:44 AM
How much rain would it take for the Atchafalaya to "capture" the Mississippi?

With overlay. Looks like BR southern 'burbs might take a hit, but BR itself seems ok. NO on the other hand... farked.

mreuther: It looks like there won't be much left of the bayou areas. This could wipe out what was left of the shrimp operations down there.

If anything, this storm could trash some of the levees that maintain the "reclaimed" bayou land, essentially *repairing* much of the bayou.

Silly humans.

Here's hoping people get out while they can.

My son came home one weekend talking about a girl from "Crotch Springs". I almost came out of my skin until he told me how it was spelled. He has since learned to pronounce it correctly. I have learned that a drink beofre he arrives helps the shock.

Pretty much. Plus they like wet swampy soil, and a good flood works well for them.

I really hope people get the hell out.
Regardless of how much money you have, and your "class status" you still have almost 24 hours before it hits, so get the heck out.

Part of the reason people didn't leave before Katrina was because the hurricane that was supposed to hit them previously either missed them or wasn't as powerful, but now they've learned their lesson.

Shiftless 2008-08-31 10:49:09 AM
Hurricanes aren't a new phenomenon. What did we do in the past? Why are people so unprepared? This happens every YEAR!!!

My parents are bringing their dog from Orange, TX, just in case the storm takes a turn or if flooding's an issue as it sits over SW Louisiana/SE Texas for the better part of a week. I'm just wondering if I'm going to end up tossing that damn dog off the balcony.

/I love dogs, just hate their little bastard.

Last night the University of Houston played Southern University (from Baton Rouge) here in Houston.

If the Southern fans know what's good for them, they'll stay here to wait out the storm and not head back home just yet!

So? Unless they are below sea-level, they should be just fine.

Why don't we ask "Focus On The Family"'s meteorologist, Stuart Shepherd? You know..the guy who asked evangelical Christians to pray to rain out Obama's acceptance speech (new window)?

/He really is a meteorologist. That's the really sad part.

Good god get over yourself. Praying for rain at an acceptance speech is not the same thing as praying for a hurricane to hit and wipe out a large part of the gulf coast. You are a First Class five-star IDIOT for comparing the two.
