Facepalm needed. Outbreaks are occurring because of pigs and horses are being raised and housed near orchards where fruitbats give birth, not because bats can program viruses to attack humans. The virus is endemic and harmless to bats and has always been there.

If only the virus was transmitted through contact with bat feces and made humans delirious.

Komodo dragons use biological attacks in a manner of speaking. Their mouths harbor many strains of bacteria, all infectious agents. Some are harbored in the saliva, some in the teeth. So if the biting and tearing of flesh doesn't bring down the prey, the numerous infections leading to septicimia sure will. As for how many bacteria, so far they've identified over 50, and all nasty.

Years ago I was visitng the Daintree River. There was a forest walk which ended at a screen covered sanctuary. There were a couple of fruit bats recoving from various ailments hanging from the overhead fronds. A less experienced tourist (*cough* and older american lady) spotted one dangling at about 6ft above the ground and decided to pat it.

When you rub the stomach of a male fruit bat you may get more than you bargained for. She did.

It hooked into the skin on her wrist with very sharp, will-not-let-go hooks, got it's 'man lipstick' out and proceeded to hump her arm as if it's life depended on it. The best part was her reaction. She was calling to her friend that "I may be caught here. Can you come and ... It's very cute, but ... I don't think that's right".

At the time I was young, inexperienced and crass and I thought, "probably the most dick you've ever had".

But I'm grown up now and wouldn't think that.
