That would be awesome. Run the most incompetent campaign humanly possible up to about a week before the election, then actively endorse Barack Obama. Watching fat old rich men weep openly as the GOP shatters into a thousand tiny little pieces...

Excuse me, I need to go change my pants.

LIBERAL MEDIA!!1!

Seriously though, picking someone with conservative values is probably not the smartest idea, given the attitude mainstream America has toward the far right in this election. With party registration for the Republicans way down this year, all it's going to do is shore up his base when he should be going after independent voters.

In November of 2006, the Anchorage Daily News described Palin's positions on social issues in a story wrapping up the governor's race:
(new window)

"A significant part of Palin's base of support lies among social and Christian conservatives. Her positions on social issues emerged slowly during the campaign: on abortion (should be banned for anything other than saving the life of the mother), stem cell research (opposed), physician-assisted suicide (opposed), creationism (should be discussed in schools), state health benefits for same-sex partners (opposed, and supports a constitutional amendment to bar them)."
That last line kind of sums it up for me. I don't want her anywhere near the top echelons of my country.

Bringing up long-debunked stories on creationism in schools is a bit silly.

Palin, back in 2006:

In an interview Thursday, Palin said she meant only to say that discussion of alternative views should be allowed to arise in Alaska classrooms:

"I don't think there should be a prohibition against debate if it comes up in class. It doesn't have to be part of the curriculum."

She added that, if elected, she would not push the state Board of Education to add such creation-based alternatives to the state's required curriculum.

Yeah, discussion's not kosher either, sorry. That still counts.

/plus it only became "discussion" when she realized she couldn't win without dialing it down a notch

Oops, farked that up -

Also, from your own link:

"Teach both. You know, don't be afraid of information. Healthy debate is so important, and it's so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both."

She was backtracking, pure and simple. Teaching something is far different from, "Well, if the kids bring it up on their own, okay!" Feel free to pretend that it does, though, as that's really your only leg left here.

I find this more egregious than the creationism thing:

Some press reports following the McCain campaign announcement have repeated that right-wing rhetorical flourish that has Palin declaring that she has gay friends. That softer image is not what some Alaskans saw.

"That's just completely wrong," said Allison E. Mendel, the attorney who brought the 1999 case. "She spoke on radio programs all throughout the campaign saying, 'I want a constitutional amendment, I think these things are only for a man and a woman.' ... I don't think she's ever said a friendly word about gay people, that they ought to have health benefits like other people do or anything along those lines."

These are the big ones for me. She's anti-science and supports amending the Constitution to restrict the rights of citizens. I wish people would stop focusing on how she looks and realize that her positions are terrifyingly regressive.

Ooh, me too. Well, not that I was going to vote McCain anyways. But who in their right mind finds homosexuality so awful that they wouldn't just simply fail to mandate that businesses to give benefits for same-sex couples (which makes at least some cursory sense if the couples aren't legally bound), but actually prohibit businesses from doing business as they see fit? If the dildo consortium I run chooses to give benefits to same-sex couples, who the hell are they to stop me? What kind of commie bullsh*t is that? I mean, really.

These are the same people who had "No Dogs Or Irish" signs outside their bars and who did everything they could to disenfranchise those uppity negroes who didn't know their place. Nothing has changed but the group they hate on.

And in 20, 30, 40 years homosexuals will have the same rights as every other human being, and they'll be hating on someone else while pretending they always got along just fine with the Jewsblacksgays.

Up here, the Anchorage Daily News had a big section on Palin.

A couple interesting things from that article (copied verbatim from Anchorage Daily News)

"She spoke favorably in her campaign of schools teaching the creationism debate with evolution, but lived up to her pledge to do nothing as governor to push the idea."

and

"Her first veto was of a bill that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships."

Frank N Stein: "Her first veto was of a bill that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships."

Ah, here's what's up with that:
Summary: The Associated Press reported that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin "opposes gay marriage -- constitutionally banned in Alaska before her time -- but exercised a veto that essentially granted benefits to gay state employees and their partners." However, the AP did not note that Palin stated that she vetoed the bill because the Alaska attorney general had advised her that it was unconstitutional, not because she believed same-sex partners of public employees should receive benefits.

There is another issue, that is not our business persay, yet it kind of is.

She has a daughter who mysteriously was out of school with MONO, while her mother was in her last trimester of her pregnacy.

Gov Palin told her staff she was with child when she was 7 months prego. She is a runner and is in good shape. All of her staff and friends were shocked that she was so far along and saw no sign of it at all.

That was not the case with her other children, at 7 months she was showing quite a bit. Now generally speaking, you will get at least the same size each time at the same stage of pregnancy from one birth to another. (Assuming that you went back to the same weight after each pregancy).

Now she was in Texas, when were water broke and she immediiately flew back to Alaska to have her baby there. While there can be a great deal of time between your water breaking and giving birth. I NEVER, EVER HEARD OF SOMEONE THEN TAKING A SIX HOUR FLIGHT! The amnoinic fluid is in effect a shock absorber for the fetus, a plane taking off and landing is not advised once your water brakes.

THE RUMOR IS THAT SHE FLEW UP TO ALASKA, B/C HER TENNAGE, UNWED DAUGHTER WAS GIVING BIRTH AND SHE HAD TO BE IN ALASKA TO HELP COVER UP THE FACTS. IT IS NOT MY BUSINESS WHAT GOES ON IN HER HOUSEHOLD. IF THE CHILD IS HERS OR HER DAUGHTER'S DOESN'T MATTER TO ME, AT ALL. BUT THE FOLLOWING DOES WORRY ME:

SINCE SHE WANTS TO COMPLETELY OVERTURN ROE V WADE: WHO IS SHE TO TELL SOMEONE ELSE THAT YOU MUST GIVE BIRTH TO A DOWN'S CHILD (OR ANY OTHER SPECIAL NEEDS CHILD), JUST BECAUSE SHE (AND/OR) HER DAUGHTER DID???

My sister is a District wide assisant priciple for Spec. Ed on LI, NY. Both time when she was pregnant, she (and my brother in law), went with amniosentisis, (that was 20 years ago) and cvs, (that was 18 years ago).

AS SHE STATED AT THE TIME, "I WORK WITH THEM, (SPEC ED CHILDREN), AND I LOVE MY JOB AND I LOVE THE CHILDREN I WORK WITH, BUT THERE IS NO WAY I AM COMING HOME TO A SPEC NEEDS CHILD. LUCKILY, THE TESTING SHOWED PERFECTLY NORMAL FETUSES EACH TIME, WHICH LEAD TO MY TERRIFIC NEPHEWS. (Both of my nephews are total farkers).

While I do not have children, however, I agreed with my sister then and I still do now.

If Gov palin, wants to give birth to a spec needs child that his her choice, but who is she to force it on others???

There are people that agree with her completely on these issues. There are also people that agree with one or more of these issues and feels that the other issues aren't really all that important, at least not now. Right now a frighteningly large number of people, at least of those who vote, fall into one of those categories.
