Did Colbert's Press Corps roast of W not teach these morons anything? Use war, famine, poverty, and disaster as a photo op, you'll be ridiculed for years.

First his POW status and now dead hurricane victims - there is NOTHING John McCain won't exploit.

lerry [TotalFark] 2008-08-30 11:40:22 PM
This election season is starting to remind me of the Dole/Clinton campaign for some reason. Which is odd because I was 12 that year and didn't care much about it.

McStinky 2008-08-30 11:42:43 PM
Yes, because the eventual ridicule from slowing down relief efforts due to his security requirements will be well received.

The man doesn't learn from history, which is odd, since he's certainly seen a lot of it personally.

queezyweezel 2008-08-30 11:45:20 PM
Hmm, having a presidential candidate around wouldn't impede the rescue/recovery efforts at all............
I hope they both stay far away, and let the rescue crews do their jobs.

Exactly. He should've learned from the example of his old pal Pliny the Elder. You're just going to make it worse.

CravenMorehead 2008-08-30 11:49:27 PM
Yes, and I'm certain that the only reason he's going there is so that he can help with relief efforts.

What a colossal douche bag. "Look everyone, pain and suffering in one of our cities. I need to get there STAT for a photo op. Which color tie should I wear?"

I wonder if he'll need to beef up security with added police officers and national guard.

I'm sure that will go over well.

He should wear his "Orange syringe cap floating by in the floodwaters" tie.

lerry: This election season is starting to remind me of the Dole/Clinton campaign for some reason.

I've had the same déjà vu all over again feeling, too. The Republicians trotting out some ancient honorable war hero as the nominee because this is his Last Shot at the Presidency.

Neither candidate generated much of a buzz within their own party, much less the rest of the nation. Both seemed to be just going through the motions of the electorial process.

Both times the media tried to create the impression that the race was much closer than it actually was. I think this year will be a virtual replay of 1996 with the Democrats winning the White House in a landslide...

remember the flooding in the midwest, where the state he visited asked him not to because of his security taking away from relief efforts, and he did it anyways?

burndtdan: remember the flooding in the midwest, where the state he visited asked him not to because of his security taking away from relief efforts, and he did it anyways?

I would hope the city doesn't give him the security he asks for. He's going there on his own. The risk is his.

The benefit is only to the taxpayers of Minnesota, so they don't have to have a security detail at the convention center, where he would otherwise give his speech.

Sorry, but if I were running for office of President of the United States, and I elected to go to a disaster area that was just decimated by a hurricane, tornado, earthquake or other natural disaster... I would most certainly not ask for those localities to provide extra security. I'm going there of my own volition for a photo opportunity. Essentially, I would be making an ass of myself, but it most certainly would not be at taxpayers expense.

Let him take his own life into his own hands, if he really wants to visit a flooded NOLA.

Wow. Just wow. I can't believe anyone would be that stupid as to use a major disaster as a backdrop for an acceptance speech as president (or any other office). It just boggles the mind how inane that would be. Someone in his party thought that this was a good idea?

If I were Obama, I'd be getting the troops together in Washington DC, to be ready to vote for emergency funding for Gustav's victims. It would not only be the right thing to do, but would show leadership, while empty suit McCain makes a speech and panders to someone...

Unbelievable...

How could anyone see McCain out there and not believe he's exploiting the victims for political reasons? Are there people that are dumb enough to believe he'd be doing it out of the kindness of his heart?

Knowing the way his campaign f--ks things up, the Scorpions Rock You Like a Hurricane will play immediately after the speech.

Hobodeluxe [TotalFark] 2008-08-31 12:56:02 AM
why didn't they go after Katrina? This is the question they will be asked. The cake photo will be shown and people reminded that the difference is the election. it does work for them as far as the telethon and the no-show of Bush. They were looking for an excuse not to have him there any way.

If I were Obama I'd probably stay away. I'd say they have enough going on down there without my security and press and everyone following me around for a photo shoot. I do ask all my supporters to help all they can and donate to the red cross.

LosinMySenses [TotalFark] 2008-08-31 12:58:26 AM
Wait, you didn't see this coming? Let's reember this is "More of the same" he's taking a page out of Bush's book. It started with the "Mission Accomplished" you might say, but Nope, it goes back to Ground Zero..remember that? Bullhorn, flag..photo-op. THen Katrina..Bush shows up, "You're doing heck of a job Brownie!" and what's that? Brown resigned?

This isn't unexpected if he's really going to do this. He'll just make Bush jealous that he got the photo-op before him

I really just can't believe he's considering this. Well, I can believe he's considering it, but not seriously. Yes, he wants to lead the country and that includes post-disaster photo-oppy appearances to offer condolences or whatever, but he's not president yet. This isn't his state. Let others take care of this and stay the fark out of the way! And delivering your acceptance speech from there? Really!?

If it turns out Houston, NOLA, whoever gets pounded, offer your condolences from St. Paul, tell them you'll help them as a Senator now and as President next time, and move on.

They really should postpone the convention. Postponing it will be good PR, and it will push the post-convention bump closer to the election.

I'm sure that about a quarter of the population - the same quarter that supports Bush - will watch this speech on Fox News and think good things about John McCain. Everyone else will be just as confused as they have been for the past eight years.

Larry Mahnken: They really should postpone the convention. Postponing it will be good PR, and it will push the post-convention bump closer to the election.

I think the reason that they are reluctant to do so is because of Palin. The McCain camp is hoping to cement her in place for the base before the dems and the media can start shredding her.

You hear the media spouting off about McCain's 'gamble', but shiat, that was a farking awesome choice. I mean, seriously. Out of a field of turds, he picks some weird goddamn rock-thing that know one has ever seen before. 'course, it'll probably turn out to be a petrified turd... But part of the reason he was able to nominate her is the fact that it was supposed to be a very quick, smooth transition into the Convention, which would have taken some of the heat off his choice or at least distracted the base.

I seriously, seriously, seriously think this was the best move McCain could have made. There's no farking way McAncient/Gold Digger can get elected. And if they do, god help our souls.

A week or two before the convention would allow them to "sell" her before the convention -- and then they can spend the convention attacking Obama non-stop rather than having to sell their VP, too.

Scratch Meany 2008-08-31 05:29:19 AM
When I read the headline I thought "He's going to give his speech from the oval office? Isn't that prejudicial?
Not that I hope for anything but a meteorologial Miracle for NOLA, but, in the spirit of comedy, wouldn't it be funny if, while he was giving the speech, there were people paddling by in rowboats behind him and his PA and Satalite systems were slowly being disassembled and stolen by looters?

Larry Mahnken [TotalFark] 2008-08-31 05:30:04 AM
Edsel: At some point she will have to give a real interview. That should get interesting.

She's not a nitwit. She's definitely smarter than Quayle, and she can push talking points smoothly as well. The question is whether people will buy her as a Vice President after the initial "wow" period fades in a couple of weeks.

Migaloo 2008-08-31 05:33:21 AM
In the past 7 years, it would appear most of this country has become a disaster zone.

Will this involve a stormy sleepover with Nagin in the 9th ward? This ploy will not matter as he aint even chief dooshbag yet.

Aeonic_Blue 2008-08-31 05:35:16 AM
Larry Mahnken: A week or two before the convention would allow them to "sell" her before the convention -- and then they can spend the convention attacking Obama non-stop rather than having to sell their VP, too.

You really think that would work?

She's a complete unknown. I can kind of understand why he would choose her; she doesn't have the baggage that all of his other choices had. Given the right amount of discipline, media control, and luck, they probably think they can paint her how they want...

but a convention is a much better place to do that. Trying to reveal her on a multitude of news shows and interviews is going to be a pain in the ass, disorganized. It'll give detractors a lot of ammo as the media tries to dig up whatever it can for ratings.

If they postpone the convention, it's going to hurt them. Not postponing it will hurt them as well, but doing a decent action isn't likely to gain you favor in the eyes of the voting public; they expect it to be postponed. But if they want to control the Palin narrative, they have to put her on that stage as soon as possible, preferably with a bunch of testimonials from frigid alaskans that love her.

It's probably gonna be hard to attack Obama during the convention non-stop, too. They need to prove their VP to the media, moderates, and undecideds. They can't afford to ignore her to attack Obama.

It's a huge gamble. She'll help consolidate the nutters, but they are going to be on the defensive for god knows how long.

Oh, they are, but it's just not working. Not in the same way that you can in a convention, whhere you can stage the announcement to a roaring crowd. One thing that would certainly help would be for her to do some Sunday talk shows today, but i have a feeling we won't see any of those for awhile.

Aeonic_Blue 2008-08-31 05:42:57 AM
And I bet a lot of republicans are giving a sigh of relief that if they don't postpone it, Bush can't show up, and he has a convenient excuse.
