Those Hollywood elitists are too busy caring about the environment and animals and other people (especially the poor) to support the GOP!

That's what's wrong with America today.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, may not make the trip. Schwarzenegger has said that state business may keep him in Sacramento.

"State Busines" = getting reelected because of a perceived distance from the Republican party, something that is happening to a lot of Republicans in tough re-election fights. Pussies.

In fairness to Arnold Schwarzenegger (Jesus fark, who would have thought I'd ever say that), he's never really been lockstep in GOP policy. He's a Republican, but he's actually been, dare I say it, not horrible in California.

Bloody William: In fairness to Arnold Schwarzenegger...

True- from what I've read, he's actually done pretty well. However, I would imagine that (regardless of his actual policies) appearing cozy with the GOP faithful won't exactly help his electoral chances for his state office- much like my own Senator, Elizabeth Dole, a GOP "rock star" who won't be attending either, due to a "busy week scheduled in NC"....

Because they want it to "help" with their favorablility ratings.

Why, what did you think modern conventions were for? Picking a candidate?

California governorship has term limits. As a result, Arnold's not running again (next Governor is expected to be Dianne Feinstein or in a longshot, Jerry Brown). The "state business" is signing a budget. It's the same reason California passed at the delegate counting, since many among the original Dem delegates were also state assemeblymen & senators.

Also to be fair to him, he terms out in 2010. Although there are rumors that he'll run for senate against Boxer in 2010. That'd be a shame; what we really need is to get Feinstein out.

Because Arnold's a Republican simply because he's a fiscal conservative. Socially, he's liberal. I didn't vote for him, but I can't really complain about the job he's done, particularly in comparison to his predecessors.

Rush Limbaugh and Hannity hate his guts, so he can't be all bad. I dunno how good that makes him, though, but I don't live in CA. So, it's not up to me anyway.

As to the article, I think the "fundraiser" gimmick is probably the best idea for them. It'll give the albeit somewhat illusory appearance both of classiness (and hopefully it can actually do some good), and of bucking "politics as usual."

Seems like a net positive if they go that route.

Babs has considered retiring after her last term. It's not outside the realm of reason she does decide to retire in 2010. Certainly, I can't imagine Feinstein running again in 2012, especially since she's considering trying for the Governorship again.

She's considering running. But she'll be 77 years old when she does it. Frankly, the most likely choices for Gov are both Senators. I don't see a Republican making waves for it, yet.

Actually, I wouldn't mind her too much as Governor, since that'd take her out of the senate and she wouldn't have any real say in foreign policy issues. I don't mind most of her domestic record, but she's just been awful on national security/foreign policy stuff.

Frankly, if she runs in 2010, she's a pretty likely winner. That frees up her Senate seat for Arnold.

THIS! It may come as a surprise to some libs but Republicans are not automatons. They're not all clones of each other.

Limbaugh and Hannity are not "Republicans". They classify themselves as Conservatives. There are plenty of moderate/liberal Republicans out there, believe it or not. Arnie's just one of the more prominent ones. It doesn't mean they are hated. It's the beauty of America, everyone can think for themselves and (in theory) wouldn't be vilified for it.

They CLASSIFY themselves as conservatives, however, they're not. They're either nationalists or progressives. They want to see more gov't involvement in too many areas of life. They want to fight foreign nation building wars.

If he were a true conservative, like he claims, he would be supporting Bob Barr. But he won't, because he's firmly planted in the Republican Party.

Bob Barr has more conservative notions in his little finger than McCain has, had or ever will have in his entire body.

This.

I think he's been one of the greatest governors of recent times. (remember that impeached hack Grey Davis?) A huge problem that Guvanator has is every time he attempts to cut spending somewhere, some interest group ends up kicking and screaming over it. Spending needs to be cut, but no one wants to cut funds that go to them.

I say hack away at the education budget a bit more. When I was in school about a decade ago, I remember all kinds of propositions and measures that passed to increase funding to our local schools. I was still using textbooks that were from '89 and going to classes in hoopty-ass rooms.

...but our sports programs were florishing with new equipment and a new ball field under construction on campus. I would've loved to see exactly where all those funds went at the time, though I probably wouldn't be suprised.

Um, I kinda have to disagree here. I think you could have made this statement in 2000, but the sad fact is that many moderates in the GOP were vilified under Rove/Cheney, and many (like myself) left the GOP. Or, like McCain, went further to the right (I doubt Palin was his top choice).

After, it's the moderates who are more likely to skip the festivities in St. Paul this week.
