PC LOAD LETTER [TotalFark] 2008-08-30 10:28:52 PM
This is just as stupid and wrong as Americans writing about British politics.

John Paul Jones [TotalFark] 2008-08-30 10:34:29 PM
At the very least, her appointment, which came as a total surprise, makes a fitting end to what has been both the most high-tech, as well as the most unpredictable, American primary season in memory.

...and the top of the GOP ticket has admitted that he's never really used a computer.

Mordant [TotalFark] 2008-08-30 10:38:14 PM
but Bill Clinton - though he can't possibly have been happy about giving it - made a superb speech, deliberately noting that he, too, was once called "inexperienced".

That strikes me as odd. Why would Bill have mentioned inexperience if he didn't know about Palin yet ? As I understand it, the evil Dems were the ones who started playing that card against the noble and ever persecuted Republicans... and yet somehow he managed to get the first shot in before anyone even knew there was a gun.

Strange.

To be fair, the man is a Rhodes Scholar and presided over the single greatest period of American social and economic expansion ever. He's many things, but he's certainly not dumb.

Neither on positions nor gender is Palin different from anyone in the Bush administration.

Pending confirmation of Dick Cheney's position on creationism in science class, for one thing, she's more Goddamned conservative than Dick himself.

i think his ground game is going to be the november surprise. i wouldn't be surprised if his voter turnout set some sort of record.

i'm not going so far as to predict it, but i think it is a distinct possibility.

All she's done is send out the expected two-paragraph congratulations press release. So far.

If the ENORMOUS 9% of Democratic women who are thinking of voting for The Ticket to Nowhere blossom into say, a GIGANTIC 10 or 12 percent? You'll see Hillary on the trail.

Yes, because a text message is EXACTLY THE SAME as having a nobody with zero experience as first-in-line for POTUS should a 72-year-old heart fail. Fail, return to the back of the comparison line.

It's a possibility, but again (as in the past two Presidential cycles) the Democratic Party is relying on the youth vote, and they simply *don't* go out and vote on rainy November Tuesdays.

To win, they need to appeal to the following three groups:

* older voters
* women voters
* 20% of the opposing party's voters.

and it's going to be a pretty tough nut for the Obama campaign to crack. Obama has to survive the debates, and that's one of his weakest fronts. If he wants to win, he's going to have to figure out how to respond to McCain's most-predictable questions:

* How do you propose to pay for all these government programs you're promoting?

* If our most important issue is energy independence, why would you not drill offshore?

* Why do you believe that protectionism, tariffs, and taxes on corporate profits would improve our national economy?

I don't think he has to answer any of that. McCain has to convince voters that offshore drilling is the right thing to do. And he will have to describe how it will benefit Americans in the "here and now." The short answer is, it won't. You would be an idiot to think it would, since any oil drilled offshore would belong to the oil companies, and would get sold to the highest bidder. Welcome to the free market.

Energy independence will have to come from alternative energy, not continuing to lean on something like oil. That much should be obvious to anyone with half a brain.

I don't disagree that she earned it, but I am imagining how future generations will look back.

If Palin is elected VP, then it looks like this was just the right time for a women to be elected to the executive branch. Hillary wouldn't be seen as a trailblazer in this case, just a footnote.

Increased supply + same demand = lower prices. Welcome to the free market.

What else does increased supply affect? The *futures* market, almost immediately, even before the drills start turning. Again, lower prices, resulting in a better economy.

Energy independence will have to come from alternative energy, not continuing to lean on something like oil. That much should be obvious to anyone with half a brain.

The alternate energy sources aren't in place, so your suggestion is to continue relying on Mideast oil - - a place we're going to have to intervene and defend for years to keep that oil flowing to us. If we explore our domestic oil sources and increase the worldwide supply of oil, our strategic interest in the Mideast is reduced. This should be obvious to anyone with a map of the world.

What? That's pretty funny, considering I'm ecstatic he picked a nobody with zero experience. 9% of Democratic women saying the mayor from "Northern Exposure" made them "more likely" to vote for Pancakes/Cheesecake whereas 15% said "less likely," wow...that DOES scare me!

Although I don't believe it's going to happen, there is a possibility that McCain will be elected.

If he is elected, there is a very, very strong possibility he will die in office.

If that happens, Palin will be President, if McCain is elected.

I don't believe that Palin-- who has not even been paying attention to the Iraq war-- would do anything like an adequate job as president, and might invite disaster.

Do you understand how, outside of "yay, this is good for my team!" McCain choosing Palin could make someone angry?

I think it lowers his already-very-low chances of becoming elected; but I'd have rather he picked someone more solid-- hell, even Huckabee-- who we had some measure of.

Is that really so hard to understand?
