Awesome, but it would have been better still if it had said, "Same-sex school balls a hard sell."

Just saying.

Is it so hard to hold up breeders to the same standards that they hold homosexuals?

/ I think the certified couple thing is a good idea, actually, for those who bring in partners from out of school

It's common in New Zealand for people to take partners whom they're not romantically linked with, otherwise the vast majority of high school students wouldn't be able to attend. There's no way a school can make them sign a contract, as it'd be considered discrimination. If any school who does this is challenged, they'll back down in a flash.

punto 2008-08-31 02:51:03 AM
sign a contract? WTF? are there any copies of this contract around? I'd love to see it.

You know how I know you're gay?

Because you signed a contract confirming that you are a homosexual.

ambercat 2008-08-31 03:09:55 AM
It's not gay if the balls don't touch.

And in other news, WTF? I've never even HEARD of such a thing. Around where I grew up (CA) dances were all about having an excuse for girls to wheedle money out of their parents for a pretty dress. Having a boyfriend was a bonus (because you could force him to dance with you, much harder work to try and make your male friends do that). But there was no mandatory couples business. You could come as a single or with a friend as your 'date', if you thought you could get him to dance with you, or just be generally sociable with your friends.

Pincy 2008-08-31 03:10:26 AM
Sign contracts confirming they are gay? WTF??? I've got a better idea, why not make them kiss or grab each other's assess? Maybe a sex tape would satisfy the school's curiosity?

Go to any high school dance, you'll see girls dancing together all the time. So are all these girls now lesbians?

Some people are gay. They might want to dance with someone of the same sex. Big deal. Get over it already.

Did you read TFA? It's about because a school has done this, and it has been challenged, and they didn't back down in a flash.

Wow. The school in the image- whether it's stock or not- is my old high school, St. Cuthbert's College. I remember several girls brought other girls to our balls, as friends- but if you wanted to bring one as your PARTNER partner, you had to sign a statement about it. I never asked, but I think the girls who brought other girls might've had to sign statements too, even if they weren't lesbians.

New Zealand girl's schools are really weird about that. You'd think "don't ask, don't tell" would be enough for them, but they've just GOT to know. I'd be willing to bet St. Cuth's didn't back down.

/doesn't know the full story, brought a guy to her balls!
//same guy both years!
///he was only my boyfriend for the first year, though... ah, youth.

bobbette [TotalFark] 2008-08-31 03:36:40 AM
What the fark? There were a couple of people in my grade who brought a same-sex date to our dances.

Nobody said anything, although there was gossip from their classmates because yeah, some of those same-sex dates were actually people's dates. And that's the only scrutiny teens should be subjected to about dates: their peers gossiping about who is dating who and speculating about how so-and-so's ex is going to react because the new girlfriend is at prom, OMG drama!

I realize I'm in Canada and apparently (even though it doesn't feel like it) we're light years ahead of some parts of the world on gay rights. I just can't understand how this would be a big deal to anyone but the fifteen year olds who are actually trying to wrangle a date for prom from that cute girl/guy and then, crisis, have to decide what to wear on top of that. Go back to the work of trying to teach these kids math, New Zealand school boards, you freaking morons.

It may be easier for us because young Canadian men tend to be sexy as hell, more often than not.

Yes I did RTFA. I mean if the couple turn up on the night, they're not going to stop them attending. The school won't let it go to court.

danduran 2008-08-31 03:51:43 AM
I suppose I should point out there are several things schools in NZ portray as being 'compulsory' or required, but legally aren't - like paying school 'fees' and having to wear regulation jackets and the like. I know, because I took on my high school in both regards - I grew up in a poor family - and they backed down both times. They even backed down when I refused to attend anything otherwise 'compulsory' that had religious aspects to it.

-Sorry mate, you can't bring your buddy, he might not be suitable, and we're unsure if we could let him in. Unless of course you plan on having sexual intercourse, in which case he's obviously an ok guy! You'll just have to sign this contract ensuring that you're really committed to going all the way, no second thoughts or anything.

-Well, what about the other couples then? They don't have to sign anything, might not their partners might be unsuitable aswell?

So from that last question being unaswered by the article I can now infer that me not being invited as a "date" to one of these "balls" might not have had anything to do with my inabilities as a dancer (I wouldn't have any fun) such as I have previously thought.

bobbette, its VERY odd, because New Zealand, and Auckland specifically, is up there as one of the most lgbt friendly societies in the world.

I dont understand who these schools think they are, and hope someone here kicks their arses for them properly.

School. I suppose the US equivalent would be a prom, but no one takes it anywhere near as seriously.

VTSquire: balls.... in the mouth

Awwww my black lab I had as a kid used to do that. *sniff*

And about them worrying about outsiders... give me a break. We live near a marine base and half the senior chicks brought 18-20 year old marine dates with them to prom or homecoming. They had to give the school a copy of their ID and sign an agreement not to bring cigarettes or booze to the dance. Not a big damn deal.

Prom is such a big deal in the US for a reason. It's the last shred of "glamour" and fun a lot of people have in their miserable lives. If you live in Armpit, Georgia and your life will consist of marrying Steve Bob at 19 and working as a beautician and hoping he doesn't get laid off from the factory or disabled... yeah, prom is a pretty big freaking deal.

They had to sign a contract saying that they were actually gay?
I don't think that makes sense...

The school claims it was to ensure they were actually students.

How does making you declare in writing that you're gay do that? Couldn't they... I dunno, just ask their names and check them against some sort of list of students?

No, the students are allowed to bring a date that is from another school. The contract is meant to ensure you don't give your +1 to your same sex friend from another school by confirming you are gay. However there is nothing in place to stop you bringing a friend of the opposite sex.

I assume it is to stop troublemakers from coming to the party but it is just a stupid idea.

Isn't it always interesting when you speak of things that require someone to 'make the call', that they won't do it?

Yes, sir, just show your papers at the checkpoint and everything will be fine. Wear this yellow star of David pink triangle to identify yourself... um just so we know you are from another school. Yeah, that is the reason.

Atchung!

This ticks me off. Why do they care who they bring? When I was in HS I had to face this shiat too. I couldn't get a date to save my life (you try being 6'1" from the time you were 12!) and wanted to go with my female friend, since she was equally as awkward around boys. Tickets cost more if you bought singles. So we went to buy a couples ticket, save us some money.

They wouldn't sell it to us.

So basically, unpopular kids who couldn't attract the opposite sex, and gay couples, were forced to pay more.

I call shenanigans.

/Hey, Shenanigans, whassup, buddy?

Couldn't they just ask for a student id? Or request that guests from other schools register first? Eh, whole thing seems to be a bit retarded, regardless of the motivations.

Because in this case, his call has no legal standing whatsoever. He's just a union official.
