That would indeed be fancy.

if they raise money and help people hurt by the storm, good for them.

Oooooh. They're good.

burndtdan: if they raise money and help people hurt by the storm, good for them.

I only wish I could trust that their motives are so pure and altruistic.

What would be even better:
Barak Obama privately donates more aid than the entire GOP can raise with their effort.

floor9 [TotalFark] 2008-08-30 06:52:27 PM
That would, in fact, be great. It would be a HUGE boon for support of the GOP. Unfortunately, the GOP will always prefer to make week-long speeches about the virtues of "personal responsibility" and "love thy neighbor" than actually acting on those virtues.

albo [TotalFark] 2008-08-30 06:53:23 PM

he's rich but doesn't have that kind of scratch. maybe the entire DNC does it instead.

but also, the GOP evangelicals are stoked about Palin, and they will unlimber their wallets big time if this is indeed the plan, even to help the Democrats in NOLA

GAT_00 [TotalFark] 2008-08-30 06:53:39 PM
I am confused. Since when does the GOP help people?

bales [TotalFark] 2008-08-30 06:54:59 PM
if this is true, good for them. that is an awesome thing to do, even though i don't think its out of genuine concern but rather political grandstanding. but we all knew that anyway. either way, i'm sure the money will be sorely needed.

CravenMorehead 2008-08-30 06:58:32 PM
I'm sure this isn't a political ploy at all. Not from the Republicans. I'm sure their motives are pure. They would never use an opportunity to use something like this to win votes. That would be so unlike them.

Isotope 2008-08-30 06:58:55 PM
Just for laughs, somebody should ask McCain if he has any houses in Louisiana.

HulkHands [TotalFark] 2008-08-30 06:59:37 PM
Heaven forbid they ever do it behind cameras

SockMonkeyHolocaust 2008-08-30 07:02:31 PM
Yeah, well Obama is going to be down there carrying out people on his back.

How noble.

The people of NO are lucky these guys aren't already in office, because they would let them die while BUSH and McCain eat each others pie.

JerseyTim [TotalFark] 2008-08-30 07:06:20 PM
I'd love to see a block of phones with Republican senators answering calls and taking donations, PBS style.

oh, i not only don't trust their motives, i am certain their motives are anything but pure or altruistic.

however, if they raise money and it helps people, that's still a good thing.

newmoonpuppyhead 2008-08-30 07:11:29 PM
I refuse to believe people are this gullible.

Bonus quote from another article:

"They are also hoping to get McCain himself to a storm-affected area as soon as possible."

They could invite Obama to ask for donations.

The GOP is mostly outraged that this disaster has interfered with their planning, not that it may affect an unknown number of human beings. They're more concerned with the fact that they may have to reschedule some things at their convention than they are that people will likely lose their homes. The same people who, three years ago, said "That's their farking problem; nobody made them live in a flood zone. What farking morons! LOL!" are now saying that they wouldn't call Gustav "a nightmare, but it is a very perplexing challenge" for planning the event.

For anyone not in the know: When Katrina hit, Bush was throwing a birthday party for McCain. Despite all the warnings, despite all the forecasts, despite all the evidence that things would be very bad, McCain chose to celebrate with cake.

And he's now going to tell us how "concerned" he is about Gustav.

What a maverick.

Good on them for it. Might mean that the leadership is learning something.

It's about time, but better late than never.

Those fiendish neocons.

First they create massive global warming in just seven years, then they use it to spawn this monster hurricane that pops up just in time for their big convention, so they can swoop in and play the hero with your tax dollars.

Clearly we must question the timing.

burndtdan 2008-08-30 07:53:56 PM
think of it this way. if it derails their convention, they will miss out on their big pep rally. no chance to make big hoopla about their ticket in a year they're already suffering from lack of enthusiasm in their base. missing out on the prime chance to introduce their dark horse vice presidential pick before the media has a chance to pick her apart.

and they're still republicans, they will more than likely botch the help they attempt in some massive way. i mean, they botched it last time when they had the entire federal government at their disposal.

just a different perspective.

vegaswench [TotalFark] 2008-08-30 07:58:05 PM
Bush flying over NOLA after Katrina was a stupid move. He should have landed. I hope both candidates learn from Bush's mistake

hubiestubert: Good on them for it. Might mean that the leadership is learning something.

Absolutely. Don't get me wrong, I don't like the guy. But this is a chance for the party to show true compassion, and I hope they take it. It's a lot easier to say "our prayers are with you" than to actually help.

Unfortunately, McCain has a history of acting without taking action. The last time a disaster came up, he generously offered his prayers. Obama, on the other hand, grabbed a shovel and went to the front lines. Coupled with the GOP's response to Katrina, it's understandable why I (or anyone else) would be skeptical of McCain's intentions.

Of course, the proceeds will only be donated to the middle class, those that fall between $5 mil and $1 mil. The poor already get hand outs, so fark them.

RQB1018 2008-08-30 08:26:13 PM
They had better be very careful with this.

The Dems had a memorial service for Paul Wellstone during the 2002 campaign. The memorial service quickly devolved into a nauseating campaign event.

The republicans had better to everything they can to avoid mixing politics and charity, or I'll be similarly nauseated.

Well, the republicans spun it that way. Wellstone would have loved it.

Now with 100%* more profits going to victims.

*Profits may or may no go towards victims. Any additional profits not paid to telecompanies and it's subsidiaries will be driven down in a motorcade of GMC Yukon Denali.

/good for them if it isn't just some crafty stunt

Not a Republican but this is a no-win situation for them. Either have their gala/infomercial during a national crisis and look callous, or tone it down and help the disaster victims and look Machiavellian.

It's a total win for the GOP. They don't have to show off their party discord, explain anything about their platform, and shine the spotlight on their contentious veep pick.

Instead they get to "do" something. And by "do", I mean pose for sandbagging photos in nifty disaster gear. Playtime is much smoother when the kids have something to do.

burndtdan: if they raise money and help people hurt by the storm, good for them.

Eh, not in the long run, necessarily. If they win the election because of this little pretense at altruism, they'll just keep screwing us over and completely undo whatever good they did at the convention.

Depending on how bad this storm turns out to be, they would probably look really bad if they did otherwise. I.e., they sort of don't have a choice.

larry00 2008-08-30 08:41:44 PM
Works for me then they won't vote on that stupid cap and trade thing that actually makes air a saleable commodity.
Oh God the stupidity.
Jeez where is the leadership.
I know many companies that have banked on making some good easy money selling what they really don't own.
Is it no wonder why they support it.
