Only after the storm. Things are actually moving pretty well at the moment. It's the ones that don't leave that you have to watch out for.

Good to see that Chocolate City Nagin got his ass in gear this time and we won't see a repeat of this:

"We're doing this more for looters than the storm"

Let's hope lots of flying debris finds its way into the head of those assured looters.

That headline sounds strangely familiar:

Thanks, found a good one here (new window).
I remember watching the Bourbon Street cam during Katrina; gale-force winds, and drunks were riding bikes around and shiat... you could smell Darwin in the air.

A couple of the latest forecast models (18Z UKMET and 18Z NOGAPS) have shifted east with Gustov, which is not good for NO.

On another note: Nice high res sunset image of Gustov

Edit: Gust(a)v. I've been looking at his perfect "o" shaped eye for too long!

not again

Woodrow Wilson 2008-08-30 08:28:37 PM
Wow. It looks like Gustav's eye is partially over water again. That didn't take long. Top winds might drop ~5-10mph, but might be back up to where it was by the next NHC update.

The center is 5-10degrees right of previous guidance for the latitude it is at now. It will be interesting to see the next NHC update at 11:00. Every east wobble (without a west to correct it) is not good for NOLA. I hope I am wrong, though...

Now, i can understand evacuating bowels, but pants? They're running around in their tighty whities?

netcentric 2008-08-30 08:35:48 PM
With any luck it will stomp New Orleans into a wildlife sanctuary

lexslamman 2008-08-30 08:36:11 PM
Evacuating pants is something you do before showers or maritals.

Evacuating bowels is something yuo do before a Category 5 hurricane wipes away your half-rebuilt neighborhoods and cities.

lexslamman 2008-08-30 08:37:56 PM
Cumulative wind field maps show a growing storm - interaction with land and a restrengthening/reorganization over the gulf should accelerate this trend. Hurricane force winds could extend up to 200 miles from the center of Gustav as it makes landfall in the central to eastern Louisiana area.

be careful with the "blow really hard" statements...the French Quarter is having their annual (or is it anal) decadence festival right now...

Isn't having the 'cane pass just to the west of NOLA about the worst case, since the strongest winds are on that side due to the CCW rotation?

I'm sure everybody in NOLA is saying this right about...now:

Maybe they already evacuated bowels, and thus need to evacuate to a new pair of pants.

Well, the people should be ok, as there are none of those pesky "personal freedoms" to worry about when forcefully evacuating the population. Will be catastrophic damage to property though. Praying for all those in the path.

Ray Nagin just called it the mother of all storms. He said the NHC told him it's the worst case scenario. He says they've gotten 10,000 people out, and will keep going until at least midnight.

Ha I was thinking of bowel evacuation jokes, but then I usually do. This storm is going to be a non-event and anyone fleeing New Orleans is Morris the cat.

cretinbob [TotalFark] 2008-08-30 08:55:18 PM
It's really picked up some forward speed.

56% chance of cat IV status, 23% chance of cat V monday 2 AM, which is about the time most tracks have it making landfall right around New Orleans.

So long NOLA. What Katrina didn't destroy Gutav will.

KarmicDisaster 2008-08-30 08:55:22 PM
Are they calling it a killstorm yet? Because then you would know it was going to be bad.

Richard Roma 2008-08-30 08:55:38 PM
I don't understand why they seem so confident of its trajectory when it's still so far out. If it heads just a little further to the west than they're predicting then it's going to pound Houston. I live in Houston, so I'm a wee bit concerned. I'm not too keen on finding out a day in advance that it's headed this way, then end up stuck in gridlock on the highway while a category five comes through and destroys everything.

I'd be tempted to leave now, but I'm enrolled in an unusual graduate distance education class that's meeting every day until Monday. Unless the instructors decide to postpone the thing I'll have to stick around. And I sure don't see them calling it off, since they're from north Texas and wouldn't want to have to come back down here later.

The timing just couldn't be better.
