For a CDL holder in a commercial vehicle that's 9x the legal limit. For a CDL holder in their own vehicle the limit is .04 before bad things begin to happen.

See, this is why I don't take jobs where drinking is prohibited.

Special breed of idiot? Sorry, subby. Sounds to me like a garden variety idiot with a drinking problem and a high tolerance who I'd be willing to bet meant no harm to others. I hope this incident leads him the help he needs.

Not excusing him. But I reject the attempt to create a new Darwinian classification for him either.

Don't think so. Kinda hard for the drunk driving apologists to get behind a bus driver.

/But I've been surprised before.

Talk about the bus ride from hell. I wonder if locals had a time of day they didn't ride that route, talk about these things get around usually.

I wouldnt be too worried about riding his 25mph bus. I would, however, appreciate some kind of a warning should I be driving next to him.

Like Ralph Kramden didn't drive the bus drunk, among other things...

I got backed into by an elementary school bus driver once waiting for a left turn. They had pulled too far into the intersection and once the cross traffic started they decided to back up.

KABONG.

Fortunately I was driving a '71 Cadillac, probably the only vehicle that wouldn't be completely squashed by a school bus... those things are tough!

The driver was very shaky when I called it in to 911. I gave her a cigarette.

The school board was very apologetic... "Oh, we'll fix your car as soon as possible."

Yeah, the driver failed the post-accident drug test.

Apologist? Please. Everyone gets behind behind drunk bus drivers and don't forget drunk airplane pilots. All facetious "hero" comments aside, you should be surprised if anyone were to actually assert the person shouldn't be punished and remanded into treatment.

But if the other extreme of an apologist would brand him with a felony for the rest of his life (when no one was hurt, repeat, when no one was hurt) then I guess that makes me an apologist. Punitive action for potential harm devoid of malice should be approached very carefully. Slippery slope.

Wait a second. Two priors. (Must read for comprehension). Throw the book at him.

Who the hell gave him a commercial driver's license with two priors? Round them up, too. That's a paddlin'.

From TFA: He also allegedly had an open container of alcohol on board the bus when police pulled him over.

Okay, I know it's probably just a pint of Old Thompson or some other such rotgut, but for some reason I'm picturing this:

At my city bus company we've lost a few drivers over the years to this, it happens more often than you'd think.

First off we've had drivers get called up for random drug tests, head out to the test and never return. In that case quitting under highly suspicious circumstances is better than flat out failing the test, I guess.

Another case went about like TFA. Bus driving erratically, driver acting strange, etc. Cops meet the guy at the bus station and sure enough, he's soused. Turns out the "Pepsi" he was nursing all day kept getting a refill from a little something in his bag.

Best one for last. This driver had already been fired once, but in their infinite wisdom they rehired her. First she sideswiped a car and just kept going on route. Claimed she never saw it. The next day she hits a tree head on and damages the bus so severely they have to send it back to the factory for repairs. She called that in as "bumping her mirror" and finished the route off, smashed windshields, front end and everything. The next day (I know) she makes an sudden lane change, totals a car and drives off. The police pursue the bus and arrest her when they catch her. She bombs the field sobriety and in her bag they find enough pills to open up a pharmacy.

The reaction from the bus company? "This is a complete surprise to us, etc."

I have the greatest respect for my fellow bus drivers and I can forgive a lot of things others complain about because I know the reasoning behind them... but even I can admit, some people just do not belong on the road driving a bus, period.

I picked a bad week to stay off the sauce. It's a beautiful, balmy day in San Diego.

I would proudly sip that on my porch, umbrella and all. Slap my ass and call me Mary, but damn that looks good.

You have two hours before sunset. You live in San Diego. You have two stops before the porch (which hopefully faces the ocean)--the liquor store and the grocery store.

Most companies will put a failure to show as a positive test, and thereby terminate you, and that will be the reason shown for your termination, so it doesn't really matter I guess. Take the test and pop positive, don't take the test and they'll say you popped positive.
