Go and cry some more in your soggy Wheaties, chump. Unless your name is Jenner, no one will remember you in a years time.

Well, duh, the decathlon winner has traditionally been considered the world's greatest athlete. And he competed in more events, even if you only get one gold for 10 events.

jake_lex [TotalFark] 2008-08-30 01:10:11 PM
I do think the fact that you can win multiple gold medals in quite similar events in swimming kind of distorts things here. There's far more variety in the events in the decathlon, requiring a far broader skillset than Phelps needed in his wins.

That said, this is such a stupid thing for him to say, and it can't come off as anything but biatching and whining.

That's true, but what I saw of the decathlon, it seemed a contest to determine who was the least mediocre at the different events than anything else.

What we saw of Phelps is that he (and his team) was the absolute best in the world in every event that he competed, which is something I don't think a decathlete could say.

/apples and oranges, I guess.

Depends what you mean by best athlete. If you mean the best athlete in his sport, compared to other athletes who compete in one sport, then I think Phelps is the best ever. If you mean "best all-around athlete currently," then yeah, you can have the title, ya little biatch.

If, however, you mean what you said - "When you're talking about the best athlete in the world, I think it needs to be somebody that's well rounded, that can do everything well," Bryan told OK! magazine, then Jim Thorpe would be my pick.

Enjoy that Wheaties box, asshat. In 4 years, you'll be pimping yourself as a "motivational speaker" and coaching track at Bumblefark Community College, lucky to get a gig announcing the track events, where Tom farking Hammond will have to explain who you are.

He thinks being on the Wheaties box is a great honor, which it is... One that Phelps turned down, in favor of Frosted Flakes.

BTW, subby, quotation marks in a headline imply that those exact words were spoken, something which is untrue in this case. But yeah, Phelps isn't the best athlete in the world. I mean, his sport takes place somewhere that we spent millions of years evolving to get out of.

Receiving criticism from someone with an ego like that must really hit hard. Does this guy by any chance like to hang out on the nose of his bimmer drinking champaigne cocktails?

I agree. The decathlon is the ultimate Olympic event. I wish I had gotten to see it, but NBC was too busy showing hours and hours of badminton and water polo. I guess I'll have to go look it up online.

He sounds like the world's biggest douche, but he does have a point. The dude gets one medal for completing ten very different events. Phelps gets a new medal every time he changes his stroke. I bet this guy's bettter at swimming than Phelps is at pole vaulting.

Even for a bunch of similar races, 8 golds and 8 WR is pretty awesome, though.

Hoopy Frood 2008-08-30 03:03:19 PM
Ten events, yes. But in how many of those events would he have even qualified for the team? How many events can you lose and still win decathlon gold?

Maybe everyone should take a moment away from their time masturbating to posters of Michael Phelps on their bedroom walls to realize that Clay may have a point.

Sour grapes? Perhaps. But Clay does deserve a bit more recognition, and his criticism wasn't delivered in a mean-spirited manner.

Am I the only one who got sick of being inundating with an overabundance of Phelps coverage when they could have been showing more events instead?

If this guy wanted to be as popular as Phelps, he shouldn't have born black or asian or whatever the hell he is.

He said Phelps is not the greatest athlete in the world. He is right.

And, this whole "greatest ever this or that" thing is really getting tiresome.

When you win something, you are the champ of that thing.

When you win 8 Olympic swimming medals, you are the champ of all the Olympic swimmers.

Saying Phelps is the greatest athlete in the world is a stretch, like saying the MLB, NBA, or NFL champs are the "world champs".

Phelps is the champ of swimming, not the champ of everything.

psh. some of us have come to the realization that Aaron Peirsol is far, far more attractive than Phelps.

Michael Phelps is a terrible boxer.

ScotterOtter 2008-08-30 03:13:18 PM
The decathlon winner has always been considered the "greatest athlete" at the Olympics. Phelps is probably the best swimmer ever, but the only reason he has 8 gold medals is the number of damn events they have. Why is that so hard for people to understand?

It's like if they had the 100m dash...the 200m dash...the 400m dash..the 100m skip...the 200m skip...the 400m skip...the 100m racewalk...the 200m racewalk...the 400m race walk

I would be more impressed if Phelps won gold in swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, water polo, etc etc

noxymoron 2008-08-30 03:13:33 PM
Phelps has the benefit of so many types of swimming races to compete in. If there were 8 sprinting races, I'm pretty sure Bolt could've won them all, based on his domination. I think Phelps is the greatest swimmer ever, but I measure "greatest athlete" by more common measures, like fastest runner and longest jumper, not 200 meter butterfly stroke.

Wait, this is America. Never mind.

Who ever said Phelps was the world's greatest athlete?

He's the world's greatest swimmer.

He's also the world's greatest Olympian.

There is a difference. I don't think anyone has contended otherwise.

rbuzby: like saying the MLB, NBA, or NFL champs are the "world champs".

They're the world champions of their sport, especially since the international presence in those sports (well, the first two, there aren't a whole lot of people outside of America who are good at NFL football) has led to those leagues having all the best players from around the world.

Meh, Phelps went all out for 8 events, even if they were all swimming. The last image everyone got to see of this guy is finishing last in a race.

"Having your picture on the Wheaties box is something all athletes strive for," Bryan said in a quote of his Web site. "It's a mark of distinction that says you've reached the pinnacle of your career. This is a very special honor for me."

Ugh... I feel ill all of a sudden.

jimmychitwood: Who said Phelps was the best athlete anyway?

Just the entire media machine. The notion that Phelps is better than Spitz is laughable but the MSM has got to sell the product. If Spitz had the equipment that Phelps had, he'd would have beat him by ten seconds.

And I think it is simply stupid that they want to cut softball and then have 100,000 swimming events. Seriously, not even track has the 50M dash anymore. They might as well cut about half the events, as far as I can see.

But yeah, the guy is right. In real terms he is the best all-around athlete.
