"Lamont said that the substance fagopyrin in the green part of the buckwheat plant can react with sunlight causing redness, numbing, itching, and pain on contact with cold water weener smoking and anal piracy."

Fixed.

If a recipe calls for 20 nutmegs and you go ahead and put them all in, you'd best just stay the hell out of the kitchen. If you eat the resulting concoction, well, you've probably eaten worse.

My thought exactly. Who the hell would put 20 nutmegs in anything?

Isn't nutmeg supposed to be hallucinogenic at high doses?

I could never stand enough of the stuff to find out.

Who the hell would have 20 nutmegs? Someone with 20 whole nutmegs would have to be an absolute nutmeg fiend, you'd think, and would surely question a recipe with that instruction. And even if you went out and bought 20 whole nutmegs, wouldn't you ask yourself, "Hey, self...I wonder if I'll break my teeth on this here apple cake?"

I love how the "OOPS" in the article headline adds an unintentional and unfortunate layer of levity to the subject matter.

I mean, it's not like this is a wacky and harmless mistake like Cap'n Crunch's OOPS! All Berries Cereal.

I think that TFA said 20 "pinches", but seriously, you're a lame-ass cook if you don't realize that there's no recipe in the WORLD that calls for twenty pinches of anything. You shouldn't be near pointy stuff or hot surfaces on general principles.

IIRC, a "pinch" of spice = around 1/8 of a teaspoon. Thus 20 pinches would be 2 1/2 teaspoons. Erowid seems to think that you need to take about two tablespoons (6 teaspoons) to get high.

The people were wussies.

RTFA: It only says 2 pinches. Normally helps to get your basic data right before you go about analyzing it and making conclusions.

I like the associated story about the celebrity chef adding "henbane" to the recipe rather than "fat hen". Anything with the word "bane" in it is probably not fit for human consumption

RemyDuron 2008-08-30 02:55:04 PM
After redesigning our home, my parents house was featured in Southern Living. Actually, just my room ended up featured. In the same issue there was a recipe which, when cooked, would basically explode. So, long and short of it, we're pretty much the only people with that issue of the magazine.

I don't know, cooking with dangerous plants can be fun and interesting.

1 square inch of the leaf of Datura stromonium in a tea infusion can cause hallucinations and possible temporary paralysis.

Crushing and soaking a fistful of blue Morning Glory seeds in water and then ingesting them can cause acid-like tripping, due to the belladonna alkaloids.

The Amanita Muscaria mushroom was used as fly poison when mixed with a little sugar water.

There are many remarkable plants and herbs that can heal, as well as kill.

Your mileage may vary...

The premise was cribbed from a James White novel, "The Galactic Gourmet". It would be nice to have some originality in screw-ups now and then.

The original article said 20 nutmeg nuts,

"There was a mistake in a recipe for apple cake. Instead of calling for two pinches of nutmeg it said 20 nutmeg nuts were needed," Matmagasinet's chief editor Ulla Cocke told Agence France-Presse.

TFA: Novice chefs beware. With the popular slow food movements, return to old fashioned ingredients, and accompanying gourmet recipes for the untrained cook in magazines, kitchen adventures may be more complicated than you think

Those who cook are playing with fire. This fad of preparing food from raw ingredients may be fine for those who can afford to go to an elitist university and get a degree in cookingology. But us regular Americans don't need anything fancy. A good meal comes in a can. Or wrapped in plastic. I love my children, and nothing says love like Red Dye #2. So thanks, but no thanks. A good, honest meal is all we need, not some pagan spell to put various arcane components together into some witch's brew.

If you don't realise 20 nutmegs is too much for anything unless you are a nutmeg seller, you just might not pick up on that fine distinction, either.

When I buy whole nutmeg, it doesn't come one nutmeg at a time.

Definitely always have about 50 nutmegs on hand - at least.

Use them 2-3 at a time, usually.

What on earth are you making? One of the jars you find in the spice aisle usually have ~6 nuts in them.
