What a wonderful birthday present. This one almost beats the present that came 2 days early in 2001...

I got married on Friday, October 13, 2000. There was a full moon.

It didn't last.

Weird, I thought the Cure was ok over 13 years ago.

skippytheferret 2008-08-30 02:48:36 PM
He's kind of sad now. Not sad in the cool dark way that the Cure music used to be. Sad in the "Hey fat guy beating an old gimmick into the ground, sit down shut up and use a little dignity here...Oh and take the damn lipstick off, we get it all ready."

But still Disintigration was the soundtrack for my late teen angst. Though I never was or looked like a real Cure fan it just sort of fit my gloomy and hopeless sense.

oh man, this is going to be awesome. i became a fan at the beginning of the summer, and i am so pumped for this cd.

I love this band. The four singles they've released from it are pretty good (though none were as good as "The End of the World", the lead single from the last album, but they were still pretty good and I urge people to download them). It's so great to see a band go on for this long, have people who still care about them and still make excellent music.

"Sleep When I'm Dead" has such a classic Cure feel to it -- it takes me back to being 12 and discovering them for the first time. That song really excites me, especially since the last album [the self-titled one] was pretty awful.

It feels like Robert got that album out of the way and really found some songs to connect with for this one. I'm definitely looking forward to it. I just regret that my job now has me starting at 8:30 as I will not be able to do my Cure ritual [in effect since the release of "Wish"] which is "get the new Cure album first thing in the morning, before school/work."

But still... looking forward to it.

/First band I saw live, 1n 1992.
// Almost got stabbed by a bum with a boxcutter trying to get ahead of me on line when I was getting tickets to see them in a really small venue on Halloween 1997.

DontBeSoDigital 2008-08-30 04:17:18 PM
I saw them in June, a friend had an extra ticket. I've never been big on them, but I went because it was something to do and I'm always about live shows.

It was probably the best live show I've ever seen. They played for 3 hours and Robert Smith's voice was absolutely incredible. Just amazing, amazing live show.

SockMonkeyHolocaust 2008-08-30 04:20:30 PM
Fark U: Music is not just some performance 'job' to everyone. This dude can do whatever he wants to do, and can you say the same about yourself and your life? If not i wouldn't be so quick to throw judgments around about it and "his dignity," mr. "late teen angsty nobody anyone has ever heard of" guy.

By your logic, you aren't allowed to defend Robert Smith unless you are Robert Smith so post a scan of your license Mr. Smith or else shut up.

"Sleep When I'm Dead" actually originates from a recently discovered demo from the sessions for The Head on the Door. That's why it sounds like classic Cure and is my favorite of the four.

The strange part is that Robert Smith is no longer the creepiest-looking guy in the band...check out the latest video. Porl Thompson has gone a bit tattoo-crazy it seems.

Robert Smith is good,
but he's no King Buzzo.

The Cure are one of the few groups who are permanently on my Top 5 Best Bands Ever list. Along with Pulp.

I have been a Cure fan since the get go...Robert is who he is and he does what he does...I saw them in June with my teenage daughter and was not expecting it to be magic like the first time I saw them back in...oh nevermind..but I was pleassantly surprised...they sounded great...he still rocks the persona...and I would definately not "kick him out" lipstick and all...he is one of a kind...

/would kick some of you out

in 1981 listening to the Cure for the first time, on mushrooms

Hey you guys, let's hate a band for its fan base!

viccellini 2008-08-31 01:18:30 AM
I bought my first Cure album in 1983. I'm now a pissed off middle aged guy who thinks they stink. Everything after 1991 sucks for them, with the exception of Wish; which really is still just a little too whiny for me.

He needs to trim down, stop putting his hair into a farking rats nest, and get good and dark sounding again.

He needs to stop writing stupid love songs to the whiny obese chicks who follow them, and get some balls back; and I don't mean pseudo-metal balls, I mean real old school pissed off goth balls.

Wild Mood Swings
i'll give you. It has two good songs ("Mint Car" and "This is a Lie") and a bunch of bad ones, but come on, you can't hate Bloodflowers!

Almost went to see 'em just for the opening act. Not a fan. But the band that toured with them... OH MY GOD.

/65daysofstatic should not be reckoned with.

No. You should be hit with a brick by four angry dwarfs and 200 solemn faces. And don't forget to give me back my black t-shirt.

Randyman 2008-08-31 10:06:14 AM
Saw the Cure earlier this year (front row I might add!). They played for 3 hours, with 2 full encores, and the sold out crowd wanted more. The guy still has something to say, and he does things on his own terms. Great to have Porl back in the band as well, he gives them an edge they were missing. Check out their MSG / FUSE performance on YouTube... it's from the latest tour...

//Unlike, say, 99% of rockers, Smith has (musically) aged well
///In terms of looks, uhh, no

Robert is awesome because he never let his success change him. He to this day seems almost intimidated by his fame. Check out the beginning this video, how many rock stars do you know of would personally serve beer to the press?

Robert Interview (new window)

Check out "How Beautiful You Are" and "Snow in Summer" on Youtube. A couple of little known gems that I enjoy.

I have a lot of respect for Robert Smith. He may look goofy but it's the same goofy look he's had for 30 years, unlike all the countless poofy hair douches who suddenly get tattoos, haircuts/dreads/cornrows, and a whole lot of piercings in their face whenever the tides change.

for those who think the cure haven't done anything good since wish, you should listen to bloodflowers, and buy the trilogy DVD (entire pornography, disintegration and bloodflowers albums live back-to-back).

and when 49 years old you reach, look as good as robert smith you will not, hmm?
