A yurt is a semi-permanent tent structure - the design originates in Mongolia. Very popular with the hippies.

Hippies don't have money.

Yurts are popular with yuppies and people who are too chickenshiat to actually camp. From what I hear, they're comfortable though.

Pointy Tail of Satan: Yurts?

hooknslice_okc: WTH is a yurt?

A yurt is originally a nomadic dwelling with origins in central asia. The structure had a circular timber frame and a wool covering. It could be easily transported to fit the lifestyle of the nomadic people of the region.

Now the new age hippie yurts in the northwest are a different story. These structures are not easily transportable (if at all) and I fail to see why they classify them as yurts and not as some other circular structure. It is more about living in a circle because everybody is equal when sitting in this shape or something like that. It is a of the disneyfication of the original yurt idea.

I define an Oregon yuppie as a hippie with money. It's all in how you look it it...

BlippityBleep: These structures are not easily transportable (if at all) and I fail to see why they classify them as yurts and not as some other circular structure.

They are permanent structures, yes, so maybe they could be called something else. However, they are used year-round in a single location, essentially fitting into the lifestyle of a park.

Touche... but not all are hippies, considering a good percentage of the state is red and lives outside of Portland/Eugene.

It looks and sounds like a shipping container for yogurt.

But as it is, we "borrow" names all the time in modern society, especially for things that (in one respect or another) are more modern, yet similar, to their predecessors. For instance, many people outside of the south don't know what real BBQ is, because they think using the outdoor grill is BBQ.

THIS. if you come to Oregon to camp and you're staying in a yurt, more than likely some of us will assume you're a yuppie or a tourist. Also...your umbrella is a dead give away ;)

Fuk lawmakers and politicians in general. They exist to create job opportunities for themselves at tax expense. Can you ever imagine an age where the US actually has LESS laws and LESS lawmakers??? Fuk no you can't.

These parasites are in till the end and we will suck it. There is nothing we can do about it either short of war. Everyone fuking loves safety!!!

I camp from Maine to Florida and have never had these problems when renting a cabin. I was a tent camper until my dog took the tent with him once.

That's right. It's awful here. Really, you wouldn't like it. So don't even think of moving here, you'll just be miserable, what with the lack of indoor plumbing and electricity.

Remove all Republicans: While people may make fun, this is a serious environmental issue. Letting animals in should affect the delicate ecosystem and it's good that some states actually do care about their environment.

I don't understand... are you saying that an Oregon campground ecosystem is too delicate for animals?

Agreed. Cats can get loose and start feral colonies. Dogs introduce disease and parasites. Pet food can attract varmints like raccoons that destroy property.

Bad all around.

No your not really camping. Yurts are for the people who want the experience, but are too delicate to pitch a tent, cook over a campfire and not shower for a few days. They aren't able to get their fully loaded RV to the campground, so they have to settle for a yurt.

Here's a page with the various features of yurts.

What? The yurts and cabins are in a STATE or COUNTY run camping area! It's designated for RV's and trailers too....

Maybe Oregon should worry more about the farking clear cutting of trees or the abundance of Meth labs than fido shiatting in a commercial camping area. Besides a cougar might eat fido if he goes to far!

That would be a NO!

Damn animal freaks already have their yappy dogs w/them in the campgrounds, why make it harder for folks who don't care for cat/dog hair over everything or have allergies?

If you can't/won't kennel your animals, you can get your own RV and keep your mess/stink & NOISE to yourselves....

Rose color glasses for all the Rose City types.

Spend a few years out in Coos Bay, you'll see how all those beautiful vistas and fresh air get ruined by the wal-mart nation.

Portland is great, and western Oregon is awesome....the coast, no so much.

fred_chan 2008-08-30 02:48:44 PM
Do people really take their cats camping with them?

My family has two cabins in the Rockies and we've always had cats. We never took the cats to the mountains with us and I never knew anyone else (besides people who spent the whole summer up there or lived there permanently) who brought their cats with them.

grinding_journalist 2008-08-30 02:48:48 PM
I'm shocked, SHOCKED nobody has said anything about the couple quoted in TFA, mentioning their dozen "four legged children" in the form of shiatzus. I'm a dog owner and pet lover, but if I was camping in the serene Oregon wilderness and I had a dozen shiatzus next door, I'd go postal.

/I hate dogs at campsites. They're loud, they bark and chase all the wildlife, and most owners don't seem to know what a leash or a bag to pick up dog crap is.

i enjoy the coast, specifically short sands for the awesome swells it gets during the storm season for surfing. Coos Bay however...pretty lame.
