Except for one pretty good singer-songwriter guy whose youtube clip I watched before I got tired of some of my fandom-wanker lj friends' constant postings of wizard rock clips & stopped watching 'em, from what I've seen this music isn't all that special.

Clever move, though, for a man to form or join one of these bands. He'll have an exclusively female fan base, crazy and rabid. Gotta be good times while they last...

i hate to admit it, but i highly enjoy harry and the potters, and i have friends who don't even like the harry potter series who enjoy the music. i wouldn't listen to any of the other w-rock bands at the moment, but i stumbled upon harry and the potters and i'm glad i did. it's very earnest music. it has a lot of heart to it, and considering the subject matter, is not high on the pretentiousness.

plus i like people who don't take themselves too seriously and have fun while they're doing it. they put on shows to promote literacy and they give out toothbrushes. it's goodhearted silliness.

Wizard Rock can't hold a candle to Viking Rock.

bhcompy 2008-08-30 02:52:10 AM
Because they haven't heard of Rhapsody(total cheese wizard cock metal), Blind Guardian(entire LOTR album, many Moorcock/Eternal Champion based songs, Jesus songs[he's a wizard, right?], Dragonlance, etc), Demons & Wizards(entire album dedicated to Dark Tower), etc?

No, these guys aren't original.

You know who is original? The goddamned Arnocorps (new window)

I've been thinking about forming a D&D themed thrash metal band for about ten years now.
If people actually start making money off of wizard rock I just might have to dust off the 'ol plate mail.

/This, muchly

Wizard Rock had already done the usual small genre thing: branched into multiple subgenres. There's still a lot of earnest, DIY stuff done by kids (which is kind of charming, much of it), some fairly decent wizard punk, and some of the folky, singer-songwriter acts are actually very talented (Split Seven Ways, for example, is brilliant). But things have gone beyond these beginnings.

Some wrockers are actually doing professional-sounding, sophisticated recording, and in the wizardtronic subgenre, you can hear plenty of that (Ministry of Magic, Malfoy Manor, The House of Black, Luna's Ceiling...). There's post-Potter darkwave (Sigilum Serpentis), and orchestral experimental (Narcissa Black).

Who'd have thought...
