That IS the headline, but the story says that poll was taken DURING the convention... so what is it? Either way, Subby (R) fails IMHO...

kronicfeld [TotalFark] 2008-08-29 08:51:13 PM
The poll was based on interviews with voters during the first three days of the convention.

Didn't the convention start Monday? Didn't Obama speak Thursday?

robsul82 [TotalFark] 2008-08-29 08:55:11 PM
Failmitter doesn't understand a three-day rolling average. That's okay, I'm sure they're fine with voting for the mayor from "Northern Exposure" as first-in-line to the White House if a 72-year-old dies.

The good-ol'-boy South isn't going to budge one way or the other.

The "undecided" voters from the "swing states" are a statistical myth. I find it hard to believe that millions of people haven't already made up their minds, especially with so much damned media coverage.

Please tell me people aren't this gullible. Whatever reasons people have for voting for or against a candidate are seated much deeper than the cerebral cortex. People still base their vote on "gut feeling." That means "people who look like me." And republicans have become experts in stimulating the lizard brain to their advantage.

Translation: If a young, relatively handsome white guy had Obama's personality and integrity, he'd be spanking McCain's geriatric ass like Reagan spanked Mondale in '84.

Is this some alternate reality where the acceptance speech was held during the first three days of the convention?

When was the last time you expected honest depictions of the facts from the Right? I wish it wasn't that way, but that is how it has been for a very long time now. Reality and truth has little meaning to them now. Theirs is the world as they wish it, not as it is.

Gotcha, so the 90% of African-Americans who are voting for Obama because he is black are stimulating their lizard brains also, right?

By your definition then, the Democrats have also become experts in stimulating [scare-mongering] the lizard brain in blacks to their advantage, no?

whoa there... Integrity? You obviously haven't read about who he cavorted with in Chi town. And as to hypotheticals, I have felt from day one that if any white person were to give Obama's speeches verbatim in the primaries, he/she would have been absolutely laughed out of the race by the media. But no one dared question a black persons ability to deliver on the promises he was making, cuz that might seem to be questioning the competency of a black person (totally verboten). IMHO he got the nom because he was black, not in spite of it.

This is still the beginning of 'The Bounce' and the Palin bounce for McCain (which should be modest at best) is yet to be recorded. A lot rides on how positive and message driven the GOP can manage to make their convention.

Larry Mahnken [TotalFark] 2008-08-30 03:32:07 AM
Nate Silver did a study on convention bounces, and the closeness of the two conventions indicates that the GOP should have a smaller bounce than would normally be expected, as it will be countered by the aftereffects of the Democratic bounce.

By the end of September, things should be around 45-45 again, barring something major.

Traditional convention bump:

Same data, taking into account that the GOP convention starts during the peak period for the Democrat:

Obama should peak on Sunday, McCain should peak a week from Sunday, and everything should be back to normal in late September.

right. The gallup daily tomorrow could show Obama over 50% for the first time which would be significant only as trivia, because it's obviously going to revert to the mean with the GOP convention in progress.
if you want to be picky he went from -2 going into the convention to +8 with the acceptance speech not yet polled. That would be a +10 swing, but using the -2 is a little bit of cherry-picking. it's safe to say he went from flat to +8 in gallup.

Because God knows we need more anti science pro war people in the White House.

Putting people with no agenda but to win elections in in 2000 and 2004 worked out so well for us. . .

The presidency isn't a prize, it's a responsibility. Treating it like a prize leads to Presidents like Nixon and Bush.

Judges make laws not voters: If Obama wins, count on getting ass raped in taxes if you succeeded in life by working hard.

Actually, the "hard" workers will, in a vast majority of cases, have relatively reduced taxes under Obama vs McCain.

I understand, it's easy to confuse "connections" with "working hard," and you think one person making $400k per year is more important than 10 people making $60k per year, but it seems that Obama doesn't agree with that.

The funny part is that even Bush can give a better major speech than McCain. At least, he can look better while presenting it.

History suggests appearances often matter.
