I am no Rove fan, but his comments seem to be completely accurate in this case. McCain only considered potential effect on votes when making this choice, completely disregarding the actual ability of the person to do the job.

There's a reason why you heard Palin's name dropped repeatedly over the last six months, and why you stopped hearing it about a month ago. She's a conservative's conservative, being both anti-government intrusion and saying all the right things on the core issues of abortion, guns, and gays. However, the whole abuse of executive power thing pretty much killed her as a viable candidate. Or so... well, everyone thought. Everyone, apparently, but John McCain and pals.
