I really would have liked to have been a fly on the wall during the vetting process when the McCain campaign picked this woman. I mean, surely there are bigger dart boards they could have used.

I said that in 2000, and look what happened. Scowly McFaceshooter has built himself an entire new 4th branch of government. Plus McCain is being stalked by death already. Picture him 8 years from now.

As I have said in other threads - I have heard interviews with her and she has a bigger set that 99% of the politicians out there. Agree or disagree with her views, (I like mostly - not all) she reminds me of a better Thatcher. (get of of my lawn - Ronnie was my man and Maggie was awesome!)

That kind of hyperbolic insanity, yet McCain supporters have the unmitigated audacity to scream "lol MESSIAH!!!" at Obama. Wow.

This is a really, really bad (purely) political move to gain all the sour-grapes-cheesecakers out there. Let's all pray to FSM that there aren't enough of them to swing the vote.

/by purely political i mean, stupid in real life.

It would have been hilarious if Fark were around during the Reagan years... The way some people feel about Obama pales in comparison to the way some folks were slobbering over Ronnie and that shrew in England.

Karl Rove from "Face The Nation" a few weeks ago:

I think he's going to make an intensely political choice, not a governing choice," Rove said. "He's going to view this through the prism of a candidate, not through the prism of president; that is to say, he's going to pick somebody that he thinks will on the margin help him in a state like Indiana or Missouri or Virginia. He's not going to be thinking big and broad about the responsibilities of president.

With all due respect again to Governor Kaine, he's been a governor for three years

I don't think people could really name a big, important thing that he's done. He was mayor of the 105th largest city in America.

So if he were to pick Governor Kaine, it would be an intensely political choice where he said, `You know what? I'm really not, first and foremost, concerned with, is this person capable of being president of the United States? What I'm concerned about is, can he bring me the electoral votes of the state of Virginia, the 13 electoral votes in Virginia?'

And...Palin?

bulldg4life: It's not important. She's just going to be VP.

...to a really really old president with a fairly recent history of cancer. Odds are better than usual if he's the pres, she'll inherit the job.

Also, I think they should put Sarah Palin and Cindy McCain on stage and send John out for coffee. Not sure I'd vote for it, but that's a campaign I'd damn sure tune in and watch.

Palin replied: "As for that VP talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day? I'm used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we're trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S., before I can even start addressing that question."

It took a Google search and 2 mouse clicks.

As long as she wears the skirt around the Oval Office, I'm sure old John McCain and his traditional family values will be quite happy.

skunkmasher 2008-08-29 08:42:10 PM
Historically, the VP slot is a backup position. He or she isn't supposed to do anything. It's only in recent decades that the Veeps became more pro-active in order to increase their visibility to set themselves up for future runs at the POTUS slot.

So, Palin saying she doesn't know what the VP is supposed to do is a non-issue. They officially do nothing.

And I'm quite sure that in the realm of stupid, clueless sound bites, this one is a flyspeck compared to some of the gaffes that have come out both Obama's and McCain's mouths.

Yeah, because McCain's health is totally not an issue, he is no more likely to die than any first term president. . .

Oh wait, he's had cancer and he'll be the oldest first term president ever and is permanently handicapped due to injuries recieved in Vietnam?

VP means something for both candidates. Obama because a VP will be an advisors. McCain because the VP could very will become president.

Dr.Zom 2008-08-29 08:45:45 PM
This choice just seems dumber and dumber. The scandal in Alaska story seems like enough to drag McCain's campaign further down than it already is.

Normally you would be correct. HOWEVER, in this year's race experience and readiness have been hyped up so this is definately fair game.

Realistically, it went something like ... "so considering all of these factors John, Sarah Palin is your running mate." "What? I'd really prefer Joe or ..." "No. We've been over this. You can't alienate more of the base. Either we lure enough Hillary voters to win, or we lose. Now here's what you'll say at the announcement."

"I don't know what the responsibilities of my job for which I'm running are" is not a non-gaffe, sorry. Touching yourself is for TFD.

Neither is her sucking up to Hillary supporters with the "18 million" comment today and, what, praying the Obama campaign doesn't put out an ad highlighting her calling Hillary Clinton a whiner?

It depends on the Administration. I don't recall Bush-41 doing anything in 8 years as VP other than go to State funerals around the world.

If Hillary's Health Care Plan hadn't been such a debacle, Gore probably would've been relegated to the same.

On the other hand, Cheney's been busier than most VPs, I imagine.

The life expectency of the average American Male is 72 years old. Putting aside his bouts with cancer, statistically McCain is living on borrowed time.

Voters pragmatically should look at it as Obama vs. Palin.

Actually, the rest of the quote did affect the meaning - this is just some mud slinging from the opposite side. Full quote:

"As for that VP talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day? I'm used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we're trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S., before I can even start addressing that question."

In effect, she's saying that the VP spot is rather ineffective, so if she was even going to get it, she'd want to make sure she would actually be able to accomplish something.

Although that "especially for Alaskans" bit makes me want to donkey punch her.
